Book excerpt: The study weaves the fabric of 18th-century German history into a multilayered garment with an eye to the brilliant and unifying, if broken, thread of the Sturm und Drang. The analysis proceeds in an interdisciplinary fashion between social layers: political economy, institutional structures, cultural configurations, forms of consciousness. The study moves dialectically, considering all phenomena equidistant from a riven yet holding center: on the one hand, a developing market economy and civil society, but the retardive corporative/feudal regime; on the other, a growing absence of genuine value (if only in nostalgia), and the seething need of the «brothers» of unseat the «fathers» of received opinion. Though in life as in literature, the brothers came undone--or did themselves in--and so ended this later 18th-century socio-aesthetic revolution, the German form of the French Revolution (Korff).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TThe Oxford Handbook to European Romanticism brings together leading scholars in the field to examine the intellectual, literary, philosophical, and political elements of European Romanticism. The book focuses on the cultural history of the period extending from the French Revolution to the uprisings of 1848. It begins with a series of chapters examining key texts written by major writers in languages including: French; German; Italian; Spanish; Russian; Hungarian; Greek; and Polish amongst others. A second section then explores the naturally inter-disciplinary quality of Romanticism, exemplified by the different discourses with which writers of the time set up an internal, comparative dynamic. These chapters highlight the sense a discourse gives of being written knowledgeably against other pretenders to completeness or comprehensiveness of self-understanding of the time. Discourses typically advance their own claims to resume European culture, collaborating with and at the same time trying to assimilate each other in the process. The main examples featured here are: history; geography; drama; theology; language; philosophy; political theory; the sciences; and the media. Each chapter offers an original and individual interpretation of an inherently comparative world of individual writers and the discursive idioms to which they are historically subject. Together the forty-one chapters provide a comprehensive and provocative overview of European Romanticism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to the current revision of Matthias Claudius's image by, illuminating the complex of ideas that lies at the core of his thought and relating them to his art and the broader concerns that were most important to him. Claudius has long had a firm place in the canon of German literature as a naive and soulful poet of folklife, nature, and religious faith. Over the past two decades, however, a growing body of scholarship has uncovered aspects of his life and work that demand reconsideration of his traditional image. This volume represents an attempt to contribute to the revision. This volume elucidates the ideas central to Claudius's thought and views them in connection with both his work and important issues of the time. Over and against the traditional image of Claudius the study projects a more accurate and balanced, indeed, a substantially new vision of the poet and man.

Book excerpt: In this illuminating comparative study, three generations of leading American and German scholars explore the phenomenon of nationalism in Germany and the United States, from the Declaration of Independence to the fall of the Berlin Wall. The book identifies and defines the similarities and differences between American nationalism, based on an ideology of inherent rights and faith in the 'American dream', and the 'blood and soil' nationalism of Germany. In the process, contributors encounter striking differences between the role of national symbols and the representation of the nation in both countries, and equally revealing parallels regarding the role of political and social movements, as well as the way in which colonial aggression has been related to a nationalistic discourse at home. This interdisciplinary book focuses on five areas:politics (American republicanism and German monarchism)culture (art, architecture, and the arts)warfare and militarismthe writing of national historythe role of political and social movementsThis book not only represents a major contribution to studies of German and American history, but, through the uniqueness of its comparative approach, provides profound insights into the concept of nationalism and signals the way for future comparative research.

This book was released on 1989 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study discusses how J.G. Hamann, the Magus of the North, who stood godfather to Goethe's generation, delved into language and history. His view of language was mediated by the depths and power of the Kabbalah; his treatment of history was activated by the suffering and endurance of the Jews. Language embodied a people's deeper history for Hamann and as such unified his perspective. His concrete approach, directed towards the creative word, went against the grain of received opinion and stirred Benjamin's speculations in the twentieth century. In Hamann's conversion vision, Cain slew Abel: as fratricide would end German "Kultur."
