Book excerpt: "The product of twelve years of research and eight more of mapmaking, A Historical Atlas of Tibet documents cultural and religious sites across the Tibetan Plateau and its bordering regions from the Paleolithic and Neolithic times all the way up to today. It ranges through the five main periods in Tibetan history, offering introductory maps of each followed by details of western, central, and eastern regions. It visualizes the history of Tibetan Buddhism, tracing its spread throughout Asia, with thousands of temples mapped, both within Tibet and across North China and Mongolia, all the way to Beijing. There are maps of major polities and their territorial administrations, as well as of the kingdoms of Guge and Purang in western Tibet, and of Derge and Nangchen in Kham. There are town plans of Lhasa and maps that focus on history and language, on population, natural resources, and contemporary politics."--Excerpted from jacket blurb.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, royal dynasties have dominated countries and empires around the world. Kings, queens, emperors, chiefs, pharaohs, czars - whatever title they ruled by, monarchs have shaped institutions, rituals, and cultures in every time period and every corner of the globe. The concept of monarchy originated in prehistoric times and evolved over centuries right up to the present. Efforts to overthrow monarchies or evade their rule - such as the American, French, Chinese, and Russian revolutions - are considered turning points in world history. Even today, many countries retain their monarchies, although in vastly reduced form with little political power. One cannot understand human history and government without understanding monarchs and monarchies. This fully-illustrated encyclopedia provides the first complete survey of all the major rulers and ruling families of the world, past and present. No other reference work approaches the topic with the same sense of magnitude or connection to historical context. Arranged in A-Z format for ease of access, World Monarchies and Dynasties includes information on major monarchs and dynasties from ancient time to the present. This set: includes overviews of reigns and successions, genealogical charts, and dynastic timelines; addresses concepts, problems, and theories of monarchy; provides background and information for further research; highlights important places, structures, symbols, events, and legends related to particular monarchs and dynasties; includes a master bibliography and multiple indexes.

Book excerpt: By subjecting biblical writings to a political analysis, Sicker constructs a plausible political history of the ancient Israelite states that dealt with virtually every issue faced by governments throughout subsequent history. As he makes clear, the way they dealt with those issues, successfully or otherwise, is highly instructive and relevant to today's analysis of geopolitical issues. Our knowledge of the political history of ancient Israel is almost exclusively dependent on the information that may be gleaned from biblical writings, which reflect a historiosophical perspective very different from that employed in modern historical writing. Nonetheless and despite all the problems encountered in dealing with the biblical texts, the history of the ancient Israelite states that can be derived from them has much to offer a student of politics. Instead of the critical literary analysis common to contemporary biblical studies, Sicker constructs a plausible political history of the ancient Israelite states that takes into consideration the geopolitical realities that directly conditioned much of that history as well as the religious dimensions of Israelite political culture that played a critical role in it. He demonstrates that the ancient Israelite states were confronted by virtually every political dilemma, domestic and international, encountered by states and governments throughout the subsequent history of the world. The way they dealt with the issues, successfully or otherwise, is highly instructive and relevant to the complex issues faced by states and governments today.

Book excerpt: The Bagrationi Dynasty - The Royal House of Georgia and Lesser Houses of Nobility has been approached in a unique way: while revealing the ancient history of the Dynasty, clearly tracing the development of the Nation of Georgia, which shaped Georgia, he also unfolds the present life of the Royal House of Georgia and its representatives. In addition, a comprehensive and full compendium of all members of the Bagrationi Dynasty is given, ranged by their true, documentary-proven dynastic status. The author also examines how the political interest of neighboring states influenced the independence path of Georgia and what role the Royal House of Georgia has played in it. The book is acknowledged as an essential book for historians, diplomats, journalists, and vast circle of readers who are interested, in the history of the Caucuses, and countries that influenced it such as the Russian, Persian and Ottoman Empires. Joseph Bichikashvili is a Georgian researcher and historian renowned for his research on Georgian genealogy, heraldry, and especially Royal Bagrationi Family history. He was the leading specialist and deputy head of the Genealogical Center at the I. Chavchavadze library of the Parliament of Georgia (1999-2001); Deputy Chairman of the "Georgian Genealogical Society" (1995-2018); Member of the Standing Committee for the Examination of Heraldic Issues under the State Heraldic Committee of the Georgian Parliament (since 2005); Member of the "Society for the History of Georgian Science" (since 2003). He is also a Chairman of the "Genealogical and Heraldic Society of Georgia" (since 2018) and Honorary Member of the "Military Historical Society of Georgia" (since 2018). Joseph is also a secretary and advisor to the Royal House of Georgia and a personal secretary to its head H.R.H. Prince Nugzar Bagrationi-Gruzinski, the direct descendant of the last ruling King of Georgia, Giorgi XII. His experience as a senior researcher at the academy of science, archaeologist, and educationalist has enabled him to get remarkably close to the subject of his research. He is the author of 180 scientific works on history, heraldry, genealogy, vexillology, numismatics, and numerous publications based on rare archival materials and historical sources. For his ongoing scientific work and development of Georgian Nation he was decorated with Knight Grand Officer of the Royal Order of the Crown of the Georgian Kingdom (Royal House of Georgia); Chevalier at the rank of Grand Cross in the Rwanda Royal Order of the Crested Crane (Royal House of Rwanda). He was also distinguished by the State Council on Heraldry under the Parliament of Georgia with the Medal of Honor in tribute of "100th Anniversary of the State Symbols of 1918-2018" and a 2nd degree Medal of the Russian Genealogical Federation "For the contribution to the development of genealogy and other specific historical disciplines".

This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan and China did not begin to emerge as unified political entities until the nineteenth century. Yet scholars and politicians persistently refer to "Japan" and "China" in discussions of earlier periods, as if the modern nation-state had long been established in these regions. Joshua Fogel here brings together essays by eight renowned East Asian scholars to demonstrate why this oversight distorts our historical analysis and understanding of both countries. The nation-states of Japan and China developed much later and, indeed, far less uniformly than usually conveyed in popular myth and political culture. Moreover, the false depiction of an earlier national identity not only alters the factual record; it serves the contemporary engines of nationalist mythology and propaganda. This interdisciplinary volume asks deceptively simple questions: When did "Japan" and "China" become Japan and China? When and why do inhabitants begin to define their identity and interests nationally rather than locally? Identifying the role of mitigating factors from disease and travel abroad to the subtleties of political language and aesthetic sensibility, the answers provided in these diverse and insightful essays are appropriately complex. By setting aside Western notions of the nation-state, the contributors approach each region on its own terms, while the thematic organization of the book provides a unique lens through which to view the challenges common to understanding both Japan and China. This highly readable collection will be important to scholars both inside and beyond the field of East Asian studies.
