Discover the finer points of caring for a fern, choosing a mantra, organizing a protest, naming your hippie baby, and making sand candles as holiday gifts. Including primers on cooking, dressing, driving, telling time, dancing, and celebrating your birthday in classic hippie style, and a righteous appendix of essential hippie books, movies, and slang, The Hippie Handbook knows the score. Right on. “Run us cheerily through the basics of the hippie lifestyle and beyond.” —January Magazine

Book excerpt: No one can tell you how to be a hippie. That would be very unhippie-like. It's not about growing out your hair, wearing bright colorful clothing, listening to 60s music, getting stoned, being a vegetarian, or living in a commune. Being a hippie means having certain ideals and pursuing them actively. So in a way, it can be said that hippies have always been around at all times and in all places. If you want to pattern yourself after the 60s hippies, however, then start by embracing their chore values: peace, love, the environment, and the beyond. This short book will provide you with a concise and colorful overview of the hippie culture and the history of the hippie movement. And by the end of it, you'll have a pretty clear picture of the hippie already inside of you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, a moldy slice of the upper crust has been slumming it in disguise. Sitting on stoops, smoking up, and trying to blend in with the common broke folk by wearing worn-out jeans (though really stylishly distressed), drinking PBR (even though the family owns a vineyard), and not paying rent (that’s what parents are for). Meet the Trustafarian counter-counter-culture. These young men and women have gone from the country club to the community pool--by choice, to look cool. They’ve adopted the free-spiritedness and outward appearance of the hippie, Rasta, and Bohemian sets . . . while retaining a few minor perks from their privileged upbringing, the 7-series, the summer home, and the money to burn. Inside, you will learn everything you ever wanted to know about the Trustafarian culture--from information on their formative years to their fashion choices to their fornication rituals. Get the scoop on Impostafarians, Brohemians, Fauxlanthropists, and their kept, but unkempt brethren. And next time, you’ll be in the know rather than scratching your head when you see that homeless-looking guy hop into his brand-new Audi.

Book excerpt: An insightful introduction to hippie culture and how its revolutionary principles in the 1960s helped shape modern culture. This title explores how hippies, and 1960s counterculture in general, developed and influenced popular culture in America. Covering the years between 1961 and 1972, this is the first volume focused exclusively on the emergence, growth, and lasting legacy of hippie culture, on everything from clothing, hair styles, and music to attitudes toward sex and drugs, and anti-war, anti-establishment activism. Hippies includes a chronology, topical chapters on hippie culture, biographies, primary documents, and a glossary. Coverage ranges from an examination of hippie involvement in drug use, politics, sexual behavior, and music, and a contemporary perspective on lasting impact of hippies on modern American life. Readers will encounter famous icons of the era, from Abbie Hoffman to Timothy Leary, while getting a real sense of what life inside the hippie counterculture was like.

Book excerpt: If your busy being a hippy too and you find yourself out of work because you've been spending too much time daydreaming and surfing the waves of cosmic consciousness playing music can be a great way to earn a few extra magic beans to spend. I have done lots of busking (playing music in the streets for passers-by to throw you a few magic beans) its really fun, and I feel that its a great service to society bringing music and good vibes to the streets. It's a great way to connect with your local town and you are likely to meet some lovely people. I also did door to door busking when I lived in Cornwall in England - where basically I dressed up in a purple suit and top-hat and went door to door offering to play a song in exchange for 1 pound. At the time I was raising money to go to India, which I successfully managed to do, I got arrested twice (turns out you need a license to go door to door) but it was quite an adventure.

Book excerpt: “Skip’s account of the founding of JanSport wreaks of honesty, humor, and enough anecdotes to stir a memory in almost anyone who has spent time outside.” —Larry Burke, Editor-in-Chief, Outside Magazine From small-town Kansas boy to adventure-junkie extraordinaire to respected mountaineer, this funky and funny read traces Skip Yowell’s (cofounder of JanSport) unorthodox journey to the top of the outdoor industry. Full of offbeat details and photos from Skip’s adventures around the world, he lets it all hang out as he offers you a rare behind-the-scenes look at the three hippies who built a successful company during the Summer of Love . . . how their good vibrations continue to change an entire industry . . . and why breaking the rules and taking good care of their customers keeps JanSport at the top of their game. No question, Skip’s story will take you higher. He’ll show you the ropes for whatever mountain you face. Whether he’s drinking “Commie beer” in Ohio or slurping yak butter tea in China, this book will get under your skin and into your heart. And who knows, his story might just kick-start your dreams. Book excerpt: Read the first 55 pages free at: http: //www.paradiseexcursion.com/hippies_living_with_nature.html From the author: Out of spending many years camped in remote regions and in all climate conditions, I have yet to find a good book that covers camping in extreme cold, hot or wet conditions with the information in one easy to read book. Sure there are some good survival books out there, but there is a big difference between survival, and camping and hiking for the sheer pleasure of it. Over the years of having lived outdoors, I have had the wonderful opportunity to experience some magical areas. I've lived outdoors in the islands of Hawaii, The California Coast and in the inlands such as the Pacific Northwest. It was during these many exciting years that I learned the art of co-existing comfortably during all 4 seasons and during all weather conditions. Book Summary: Written by a seasoned hippie from the west coast of the United States, this book makes it possible to comfortably camp in rain, desert or snow. It just takes the right information and planning. This unique book makes a great survival book for military, boy and girl scouts, outdoor rescue departments or any outdoor enthusiast. At the end of this book, you can find a meal budget where you can enjoy meals high in protein and nutrition that cost less than $150.00 a month to live on. You can also view the images and illustrations needed for you to make your own LampStove for under $10. his book is a summary of the many valuable tips, tricks and techniques I learned along the way. It not only makes one living with nature more adaptable, but builds morale and feelings of enhanced self confidence, learning that man and nature can co-exist together without destroying massive resources in the process.
