Excerpt: ...Variety is the paramount feature of the route. In the first instance the road itself, apart from the windings on the zigzags, takes many directions. Starting due east, it runs to the south-east towards Pieve di Livinallongo, beyond which it veers round to the north-east, and, continuing almost due north to the summit, it addresses every point of the compass on the zigzags. At the summit it turns due east again, but, when a few kilometres above Cortina, it winds northwards once more, then turns east, south, and east again into Cortina itself. To the frequent change of outlook which the road itself necessarily confers, there is added the amazing variety of the mountains themselves, which display more diversity of shape than in any other district of the Alps--some nobly massive, some wonderfully symmetrical, and others ruggedly fantastic. The crossing of the pass, in fact, is a liberal education in outlines. In the degree of outlook itself, moreover, there is great variety; at one point the road is almost hemmed in by adjoining hills, while at another a panorama of immense range unfolds itself. The road surface is good throughout, though at the time of my crossing it was not quite settled at the sides; at the same time there was nothing on the ascent itself which in any way interfered with the freedom of one's progression. In the way of habitations, as I have said, there is little to intercept the gaze, but high above Andraz stands the picturesque ruin of Buchenstein Castle. Four kilometres from the summit is the Dolomitenziel Inn, above which is a curiosity in the shape of a "hairpin" corner which is pierced through a rock tunnel, and it is after passing through this that there comes into view one of the finest prospects of the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High-Roads of the Alps: A Motoring Guide to One Hundred Mountain Passes From the first tour to the last I have felt the need of practical information, in concrete form, of a kind which the road tourist may seek in vain in the standard guide-books. They ignore the road route whenever there is a railway within measurable distance; and, when a Pass must needs be described because it is the sole link between two valleys, the vital questions of width, gradients, corners and surface quality are never vouchsafed a single line. In a word, then, this volume is designed to meet a want - a want which is the more pressing now that the power and efficiency of the modern car have made England seem small, and all low land touring grounds only too familiar. If there is one place on earth where the tireless qualities of the motor-car may justify themselves, it is on the long-drawn but glorious ascent of an Alpine Pass. The very fact that horsed locomotion, Where rises of ten or twenty miles are concerned, being taken of necessity rather than choice; but there is nothing nowadays to prevent the easy, safe and systematic exploration of mountain routes by car, and the amassing of a huge fund of delightful experiences.
