Book excerpt: The high Reynolds number pump (HIREP) facility at ARL Penn State has been used to perform a low-speed, large-scale experiment of the incompressible flow of water through a two-blade-row turbomachine. HIREP can involve blade chord Reynolds numbers as high as 6,000,000 and can accommodate a variety of instrumentation in both a stationary and a rotating frame of reference. The objectives of this experiment were to provide a database for comparison with three-dimensional, viscous (turbulent) flow computations, to evaluate the engineering models, and to improve our physical understanding of many of the phenomena involved in this complex flow field. The experimental results include a large quantity of data acquired throughout HIREP. A five-hole probe survey of the inlet flow 37.0% chord upstream of the inlet guide vane (IGV) leading edge is sufficient to give information for the inflow boundary conditions, while some static-pressure information is available to help establish an outflow boundary condition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relative motion of a turbomachinery blade row and the casing requires finite clearance between the rotor tips and the end-wall to avoid rubbing. Presence of this gap, relative motion of the blade tip and the end-wall, and pressure difference across the blade give rise to tip clearance flow which causes many adverse effects, including end-wall vortex cavitation. The vortex is formed by interaction of the clearance flow with the through flow on the suction side of the blade. This report formulates a correlation of the appropriate variables which predict the inception of end-wall vortex cavitation using the following approach: 1) identification of necessary parameters and relationships; 2) experimental measurements of the parameters in the High Reynolds Number Pump facility, a 42-inch diameter pump specifically designed for this purpose; 3) formulation of the correlation model from relationships among the measured variables; and 4) verification of the model with existing databases. The resulting model provides guidance to turbomachinery designers. The model of end- wall vortex cavitation successfully correlates the subject data existing databases. An optimum tip clearance has been theoretically identified. The correlation model contains the boundary layer, lift coefficient, tip clearance, vortex core size, and tip geometry as input variables. Submodels have been developed for the core radius and tip lift coefficient as a function of tip clearance. Laser velocimeter measurements show that additional circulation is shed into the tip vortex from the suction side trailing edge. Water tunnels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrodynamics of Pumps is a reference for pump experts and a textbook for advanced students. It examines the fluid dynamics of liquid turbomachines, particularly pumps, focusing on special problems and design issues associated with the flow of liquid through a rotating machine. There are two characteristics of a liquid that lead to problems and cause a significantly different set of concerns than those in gas turbines. These are the potential for cavitation and the high density of liquids, which enhances the possibility of damaging, unsteady flows and forces. The book begins with an introduction to the subject, including cavitation, unsteady flows and turbomachinery, basic pump design and performance principles. Chapter topics include flow features, cavitation parameters and inception, bubble dynamics, cavitation effects on pump performance, and unsteady flows and vibration in pumps - discussed in the three final chapters. The book is richly illustrated and includes many practical examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a brief but thorough account of the basic principles of good pump design. It presents the basic hydraulic equations, including cavitation, and discusses the principles that underlie the correct performance of centrifugal pumps and axial machines, giving two design examples. It then outlines analytical methods for flow calculations, including special techniques used in computer aided design. Shafts, bearings, seals and drives, design for difficult fluids, and codes and practices are treated in the last three chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A High Reynolds Number Pump Facility (HIREP) designed for cavitation studies in the bladetip/endwall region of an axial flow pump is described in this paper. The facility consists of a 1.07-m diameter pump state driven by a 1.22-m diameter downstream turbine. An incompressible Reynolds Number of 6,000,000 at the rotor tip is achievable. The two units rotate on a common shaft and operate in the 1.22-m diameter test section of the Garfield Thomas Water Tunnel of the Applied Research Laboratory Penn State. The facility was designed to accommodate laser velocimeter (LV) measurements in the pump stage, radially traversing five-hole probes in every stage, and a number of transducers in the rotating frame of reference: steady and unsteady pressure transducers force and torque cells, and accelerometers. The latter capability is provided by a slip-ring unit and hollow blade passage ways for conductors from the instrumentation in rotor-tip region. An optical quality window for LV measurements and other windows and ports are available for visual observation and instrumentation access. Keywords: Hydraulic machinery, Cavitation, Rotary pumps, Axial flow, Turbomachinery, Pressure transducers.
