Book excerpt: “Jam packed with insights from women in the field,” this is an invaluable career guide for the aspiring or experienced female tech professional (Forbes). As the CEO of a startup, Tarah Wheeler is all too familiar with the challenges female tech professionals face on a daily basis. That’s why she’s teamed up with other high-achieving women within the field—from entrepreneurs and analysts to elite hackers and gamers—to provide a roadmap for women looking to jump-start, or further develop, their tech career. In an effort to dismantle the unconscious social bias against women in the industry, Wheeler interviews professionals like Brianna Wu (founder, Giant Spacekat), Angie Chang (founder, Women 2.0), Keren Elazari (TED speaker and cybersecurity expert), Katie Cunningham (Python educator and developer), and Miah Johnson (senior systems administrator) about the obstacles they have overcome to do what they love. Their inspiring personal stories are interspersed with tech-focused career advice. Readers will learn: • the secrets of salary negotiation • the best format for tech resumes • how to ace a tech interview • the perks of both contracting (W-9) and salaried full-time work • the secrets of mentorship • how to start your own company • and much more! BONUS CONTENT: Perfect for its audience of hackers and coders, Women in Tech also contains puzzles and codes throughout—created by Mike Selinker (Lone Shark Games), Gabby Weidling (Lone Shark Games), and cryptographer Ryan “LostboY” Clarke—that are love letters to women in the industry. A distinguished anonymous contributor created the Python code for the cover of the book, which references the mother of computer science, Ada Lovelace. Run the code to see what it does!

Book excerpt: A young woman chafing at the confines of marriage confronts the high cost of craving freedom and adventure in a memoir that "pushes literary boundaries" (The Atlantic) At twenty-five, as her wedding date approached, Laura Smith began to feel trapped. Not by her fiancé, who shared her appetite for adventure, but by the unsettling idea that it was hard to be at once married and free. Laura wanted her life to be different. She wanted her marriage to be different. And she found in the strangely captivating story of another restless young woman determined to live without constraints both an enticement and a challenge. Barbara Newhall Follett was a free-spirited trailblazer who published her first novel at 11, enlisted as a deck hand on a boat bound for the south China seas at 15 and was one of the first women to hike the Appalachian trail. Then in December 1939, when she was not much older than Laura, she walked out of her apartment on a quiet tree-lined street in Brookline, leaving behind a fraying marriage, and vanished without a trace. Obsessed by her story, Laura set off to find out what had happened. The Art of Vanishing is a riveting mystery and a piercing exploration of marriage and convention that asks deep and uncomfortable questions: Why do we give up on our childhood dreams? Is marriage a golden noose? Must we find ourselves in the same row houses with Pottery Barn lamps telling our kids to behave? Searingly honest and written with a raw intensity, it will challenge you to rethink your most intimate decisions and may just upend your life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marriage is beautiful-and baffling to many couples at the same time. It's like opening a box of 5000-piece jigsaw puzzle with much excitement and enthusiasm initially, organizing and discovering pieces that fit; then interest starts to dwindle as the going gets tough, followed by frustrations, only to finally give up and put it away altogether-neglected and unfinished. If that sounds painfully familiar, know that you are not alone or the only one to feel lost, wondering if there is more to marriage than just setting up a family, raising up children, and going through the daily grind like every other couple. Do you believe your marriage, however ordinary and imperfect, has the potential to be different and able to impact others? We certainly do, though it did not seem obvious or likely when we first started out. As we learned to allow God to shape our relationship and ultimately our marriage, despite weaknesses and failures, we began to see Him at work little by little as He put the pieces in their places to accomplish His divine purpose in our lives together and individually.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How to Stay Married & Love It " Solves the puzzle of how to create and sustain a loving, passionate, healthy relationship. This volume in the two volume series covers the four essential pieces for building a strong foundation: Accepting each other's point of view as valid, (2) Fostering intimate connection by learning and using great speaking and listening skills, (3) Committing to respect each other 24/7 by productive management of upsets, and (4) Committing to each other and the relationship for life. Nancy and her late husband Jim share these skills which they learned as they navigated the mine field of enormous conflict to the SoulMate marriage of their dreams. Illustrations are also shared from couples they taught in their classes and who were personally coached by Nancy. Marriage is skill-based. It either succeeds or fails based on how the partners treat each other. Failing love is the result of poor relationship skills. Love returns, often greater than before, when new, effective ways of managing communication and conflict are learned and consistently applied. Giving up on a marriage because the love is gone is like selling a car because it ran out of gas This book demonstrates "How to..." heal from past hurts, find solutions that meet both persons' needs and reignite love or build on the love you already enjoy

Book excerpt: The tale begins over three-hundred years ago, when the Fair People—the goblins, fairies, dragons, and other fabled and fantastic creatures of a dozen lands—fled the Old World for the New, seeking haven from the ways of Man. With them came their precious jewels: diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls... But then the Fair People vanished, taking with them their twelve fabulous treasures. And they remained hidden until now... Across North America, these twelve treasures, over ten-thousand dollars in precious jewels, are buried. The key to finding each can be found within the twelve full color paintings and verses of The Secret. Yet The Secret is much more than that. At long last, you can learn not only the whereabouts of the Fair People's treasure, but also the modern forms and hiding places of their descendants: the Toll Trolls, Maitre D'eamons, Elf Alphas, Tupperwerewolves, Freudian Sylphs, Culture Vultures, West Ghosts and other delightful creatures in the world around us. The Secret is a field guide to them all. Many "armchair treasure hunt" books have been published over the years, most notably Masquerade (1979) by British artist Kit Williams. Masquerade promised a jewel-encrusted golden hare to the first person to unravel the riddle that Williams cleverly hid in his art. In 1982, while everyone in Britain was still madly digging up hedgerows and pastures in search of the golden hare, The Secret: A Treasure Hunt was published in America. The previous year, author and publisher Byron Preiss had traveled to 12 locations in the continental U.S. (and possibly Canada) to secretly bury a dozen ceramic casques. Each casque contained a small key that could be redeemed for one of 12 jewels Preiss kept in a safe deposit box in New York. The key to finding the casques was to match one of 12 paintings to one of 12 poetic verses, solve the resulting riddle, and start digging. Since 1982, only two of the 12 casques have been recovered. The first was located in Grant Park, Chicago, in 1984 by a group of students. The second was unearthed in 2004 in Cleveland by two members of the Quest4Treasure forum. Preiss was killed in an auto accident in the summer of 2005, but the hunt for his casques continues.

Before the Movement presents an original and provocative account of how civil law was experienced by Black citizens and how their 'legal lives' changed over time . . . [an] ambitious, stimulating, and provocative book." —Eric Foner, New York Review of Books Shortlisted for the Cundill History Prize Winner of the Merle Curti Social History Award from the Organization of American Historians Winner of the Ellis W. Hawley Prize from the Organization of American Historians Winner of the David J. Langum, Sr. Prize in American Legal History Winner of the James Willard Hurst Prize Winner of the Scribes Book Award (American Society of Legal Writers) A prize-winning scholar draws on astonishing new research to demonstrate how Black people used the law to their advantage long before the Civil Rights Movement. The familiar story of civil rights goes like this: once, America’s legal system shut Black people out and refused to recognize their rights, their basic human dignity, or even their very lives. When lynch mobs gathered, police and judges often closed their eyes, if they didn’t join in. For Black people, law was a hostile, fearsome power to be avoided whenever possible. Then, starting in the 1940s, a few brave lawyers ventured south, bent on changing the law. Soon, ordinary African Americans, awakened by Supreme Court victories and galvanized by racial justice activists, launched the civil rights movement. In Before the Movement, acclaimed historian Dylan C. Penningroth brilliantly revises the conventional story. Drawing on long-forgotten sources found in the basements of county courthouses across the nation, Penningroth reveals that African Americans, far from being ignorant about law until the middle of the twentieth century, have thought about, talked about, and used it going as far back as even the era of slavery. They dealt constantly with the laws of property, contract, inheritance, marriage and divorce, of associations (like churches and businesses and activist groups), and more. By exercising these “rights of everyday use,” Penningroth demonstrates, they made Black rights seem unremarkable. And in innumerable subtle ways, they helped shape the law itself—the laws all of us live under today. Penningroth’s narrative, which stretches from the last decades of slavery to the 1970s, partly traces the history of his own family. Challenging accepted understandings of Black history framed by relations with white people, he puts Black people at the center of the story—their loves and anger and loneliness, their efforts to stay afloat, their mistakes and embarrassments, their fights, their ideas, their hopes and disappointments, in all their messy humanness. Before the Movement is an account of Black legal lives that looks beyond the Constitution and the criminal justice system to recover a rich, broader vision of Black life—a vision allied with, yet distinct from, “the freedom struggle.”

Book excerpt: The Three Marriage EnigmasMost marriages all face the same underlying problem: Somewhere along the way, their intimacy was destroyed, and without it, the marriage failed, even if the couple never got divorced. As widespread as such difficulties are, the problems that sabotage intimacy are invisible, enigmas. Just about every couple faces these same enigmas. If not dealt with properly, they can lead to what I call the "downward spiral in marriage." Worse, these enigmas interact with and feed on each other, which makes them even more difficult to identify and eliminate. Rather than being in control, most couples are struggling and helpless, because they are unaware the enigmas exist, much less how to overcome them. It is the great heartache and pain that millions suffer during marriage and after divorce that has inspired me to write this book. I understand their pain from personal experience, and my heart breaks for these people. The book identifies these hidden forces as enigmas and addresses how these enigmas interact to destroy even the deepest intimacy and love couples have. Most couples level out, just to spiral down again; the cycle often repeating itself over and over. Statistics show over 72% of spouses will end up breaking their vows and cheating! Divorce is an incredibly painful experience. Many people join divorce support groups to cope with the pain they are experiencing. Some who are in the midst of this pain believe it will never end. Their lives are shattered, and most of them have no idea why.Author Kevin Foster M.Th. identifies what is happening and why. Then using the "Love Actions" outlined in this book; he shows how to permanently stop the downward spiral and restore wonderful love and intimacy forever. He then explains how to bulletproof marriages against affairs. This is the one book every engaged or married couple should read!
