Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Herring Fisheries of Scotland The necessity for fuller information than we possess concerning our Sea Fisheries must, I feel sure, be im pressed on us by the able and interesting paper read on Tuesday by Professor Brown Goode, as the result of the application of improved modes of capture and transit of fish in the United States could not have been established without the elaborate statistics he was able to put before us. My general observations may be taken as applying to the Herring Fisheries of the United Kingdom, but for the reason I have mentioned they are made with particular reference to what is undoubtedly our most important Herring Fisheries, viz., those of Scotland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Herring: Its Natural History and National Importance Portions of this work have been read before the Royal Society and the Royal Physical Society, Edinburgh as well as at the meetings of the British Association at Oxford, Manchester, and Cambridge. The author believes he has satisfactorily solved the hitherto disputed questions as to food, periodical visits, migration, &c. He has also, for the first time, established the important fact, that herrings Visit our coasts twice in the year, - that, in fact, there is a winter and a summer herring periodically arriving on the different coasts; and already, from this knowledge, additional supplies have been obtained where no previous fishery existed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Regarding the Salmon Fishery of Scotland By one of those coincidences which sometimes occur, the latter end of last century was likewise remarkable for a valuable discovery by the late George Dempster, Esq. Of Dunnichen; by means of which, the fishers were en abled to transmit the Salmon, preserved in ice, to distanb markets. I'vithout this discovery, although the benefit, of the improved mode of fishing would have been experis enced in the'mairkets, near the fishing stations; yet the Salmon could' not have been sent, in a fresh state, to any distantplace. But now, with its aid, the fishers being enabled to preserve the'salmon fresh as they camefrom the sea, the advantages were spread all over the na tion. And, in consequence, a great additional tonnage of shipping was constantly' employed, during the summer months, in c'arryirigthe Salmon, packed in ice', to the dif ferent markets in the kingdom. It seemed, in short, as if a new source of wealth had been opened up. And while proprietors found that their' fisheries were, 'in many instances, nearly as valuable as their lands, a considerable number of individuals found employment as fishermen, &c., and wealth was rapidly acquired by all concerned with the fisheries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Annual Report of the Fishery Board for Scotland: For the Year Ended 31st December 1883 A. Summary of Observations made in Britain as to the Natural History of the Herring previous to 1882. At a very early period the fishery industry was recognised as of national importance, and as worthy of the fostering care of the Legislature, and for a century, at least, the habits of the herring and other food fishes have attracted the attention of many eminent naturalists. In the twelfth century it appears that the right to fish for herrings was vested in the Crown, and for several centuries afterwards those engaged in the industry in Scotland, though willing to hand over their takes to Dutch and other foreign vessels, claimed for them selves the exclusive right of fishing. Notwithstanding this claim, the Dutch had 2000 herring busses' in 1667 fishing in the North Sea, off the Scottish coast. During the fifteenth century it was found necessary to limit the sale of herring to foreigners, that the people at home might be supplied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fisheries and Fishery Industries of the United States It is now nearly four hundred years Since these grounds were first fished upon by Europeans, and their resources are still unfailing; but the fishing interests have been mainly transferred to the New World, France alone of European countries having continued to send fishing vessels across the Atlantic down to 1880. Since then, however, the Portuguese have begun to exhibit some activity in connection with the cod fishery of the Grand Bank, and in the Spring and sum mer of 1885 bought several New England fishing schooners and fitted out others from home ports. Their voyages proving generally successful, they have added more vessels to their fishing fleet during the latter part of this year, and it is quite possible that, in the course of a few seasons. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fisheries of Newfoundland: Lecture Delivered in St. John's, Newfoundland, by Mr. Walter Duff of the Fishery Board for Scotland I would suggest that four centres to place instructors in would be suf ficient to begin with. And other cen tres would no doubt gradually follow. The centres which I wouid propose are Bonne Bay, Bay of Islands, Green Bay and some other suitable place in either Placentia Bay or Fortune Bay.. 1 find that with the exception of Green Bay where there are three or four Scotch coopers, none of these places possess the means at present for the making of suitable barrels. I would therefore suggest that an ex perimeatal barrel factory should be erected in each place under ilw aus pices of the Government so that im proved and suitable barrels and half barrels could be constructed. By hav ing stocks of these stored up, lots of from 20 to 50 or more could be sent to places where fishing had been com weneed. The erection of such fact ories has been carried out in Ireland by the Imperial Government with ex calicut results. Canada I understand has schools for Agricultural instruo tion and why should not the New foundland Government have similar training centres for the fostering of the fisheries which mean more to her than anything else? The foundation of the herring trade depends mainly upon properly constructed barrels cap able of carrying the herring to the various markets without leakage and in the pink of condition. This is the chief essential necessary to the trade. The wood for the barrels. The staves, the ends. The hoops. Apart from the iron hoops. Can beobtalned in suit able quantities all through the island in sufficient quantities to make all the stocks required.
