Book excerpt: It's 1917, and Reuben Taylor is growing up in the little town of Aylesbury in the hills of Southwest Virginia. He spends his time reading dime novels and dreaming about fame and adventure. He also dreams about Miranda, the most beautiful girl in town, while Louise, the girl next door, pursues him. Suddenly, America enters World War I, and Reuben and his good buddy Raymond get more adventure than they bargained for when they're drafted into the U.S. Army and shipped off to France. The boys are ready to take on the Kaiser and "the dreaded Hun," and along the way they run into a crusty drill sergeant, wisecracking doughboys, and attractive nurses and mademoiselles. But soon they are plunged into combat in Belleau Wood and the Argonne Forest, where they face the supreme test of their courage. Will Reuben and his buddy survive and make it back to the hills of home?ABOUT THE AUTHORRichard A. Counts is an attorney living in Hazard, Kentucky. He grew up in Abingdon, Virginia and his grandfather was a veteran of World War I. He hopes this book will be a small tribute to those who fought a hundred years ago in one of the almost forgotten wars of American history.

Book excerpt: What is a hero? Using the metaphor of a hiking trail, bestselling author T. A. Barron discusses the great variety of heroes and brings them to life through their own stories: Some are well known, like Wilma Rudolph, Anne Frank, and Stephen Hawking. Yet most are “ordinary kids” who have made amazing choices: saved their siblings from a fire, struggled to stop prejudice at their school, helped raise money to build a well in an African village. This book will be invaluable to kids, parents, and educators who need role models for young people to look up to—and a new way to look at what a hero is.

Hometown Heroes tells the stories of fifty such people from all over America, including Moody, Alabama, Ellisville, Illinois, and Lander, Wyoming. Spanning ages fourteen to ninety-three, the heroes inside this book show that it's never too early or too late to lend a helping hand and make inspiring choices. Capturing the true spirit of America—one of generosity, courage, and tireless devotion—these heroes warm our hearts and reveal a face of America we rarely hear about.

Book excerpt: Congressman Jim Ryun has provided a wealth of stories of quiet historical heroes who have, for the most part, been ignored by popular culture and nearly lost in the mist of the past. This book is not about popular heroes or cultural icons such as George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. These heroes were common people who stood firm in the face of tyranny, to give their lives for others, and to right the wrongs of social injustice. Their stories will inspire you to rise up to slay the dragons of your world.

Daniel Boone is celebrated as a Kentucky frontiersman, but what about his service in the French and Indian War? Custer’s Last Stand in the Great Sioux War is legendary, but few remember Custer’s “next-to-last-stand” in Elizabethtown, where he was sent to suppress the Ku Klux Klan and hunt down moonshiners just before heading to the Montana Territory and into history. Join Kentucky historian Berry Craig as he unearths the forgotten heroics of Kentucky soldiers, beginning with the French and Indian War and ending with World War II. Featuring tales of warriors from a diverse range of backgrounds, Hidden History of Kentucky Soldiers honors generations of Kentuckians who put their lives on the line for their country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservatism in America, as one early twentieth-century politician said, is “as old as the Republic itself.” But what are its foundational principles, and how did they form the modern conservative movement? Author Garland S. Tucker III tells the story in this lively look at fourteen champions of conservative thought—some well known, others hardly remembered at all. Taking readers on an exciting tour from the American Founding to the modern era, Tucker traces the development of conservatism’s basic tenets and shows how leaders put principle into action (some more successfully than others). Conservative Heroes offers brief but penetrating profiles of: —The Founders who agreed on the two primary purposes of government—but differed on how best to achieve the balance between them —The pair of nineteenth-century congressional leaders who fought to preserve the founding vision of a limited national government —The towering statesman whose defense of slavery has obscured his considerable contributions to American constitutional history —The last Democratic president to advance conservative principles —The president and treasury secretary who together reduced taxes and the size of the federal government—and sparked an economic boom —The forgotten leaders, both Democrats, who spearheaded the conservative challenge to FDR’s New Deal —The man who revived the GOP as the conservative party —The three driving forces behind the ascent of modern conservatism Here is the story of American conservatism in fourteen lives—a story we need to understand to tackle the challenges we face today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: West Jefferson is located in the northwest corner of North Carolina, a land once known for its cherry orchards. In 1779, Col. Benjamin Cleveland, a hero of the Battle of King's Mountain, received a grant for 320 acres in a mountain valley in return for his service during the Revolutionary War. In 1912, the Virginia-Carolina Railroad became interested in the area's timber, farming, and mining resources and began building a railroad into Ashe County, ending at Todd. When the railroad came, the area was already populated by farms and businesses, as it was only two miles from the county seat of Jefferson. The North Carolina General Assembly chartered the town of West Jefferson in 1915, with boundaries extending one mile in each direction from the Virginia-Carolina Railroad depot. The railroad brought commercial growth, and the First National Bank of West Jefferson was opened in 1915 as well. West Jefferson showcases the expansion of this small town with a popular rail line to a tourist destination and retail center in the North Carolina mountains.
