Excerpt: ... chapter xiii. tea manufacture.--plucking leaf. As the tea bush is grown with the sole object of producing leaves, it is of the utmost importance Functions of leaves.., .,, that the planter should fully appreciate the functons which leaves perform in the general economy of plant growth. No system of cropping or treatment can be correct or fully remunerative unless in full symapthy with the, principles which govern the production of leaf. Although every one knows that all kinds of plants are more or less dependent upon their leaves for some sort of respiration, yet people do not generally appreciate the importance of the functions which leaves perform in the economy of a plant. The activities of a plant are mostly exhibited at its extremities. While the roots absorb plant food from the soil in a fluid state and send it up the stem, yet such food is in a form which is quite unfit for assimilation until it has been elaborated in the cells of the leaves, where it is treated under the influence of sunlight in the atmosphere. The process is quite interesting, and shows that the leaves are of more importance to the plant than any other part of its structure. This is a fact which must appeal to tea plantersj whose whole industry is bound up in the producton of tea leaves. The leaves are quite as needful to the plant, however, as to the planter himself; and things are calculated to run smoothly only when the planter recognises this community of interest, and allows the plant to retain its fair share in due season. An eminent scientist in horticulture wrote long ago: --'Strip the leaves off a tree and no more wood will appear until the leaves are restored; feed its roots in the hope of thus compensating for the loss of its leaves, and the stem...

Book excerpt: From the early Vedic period, the Vaishyas, the oldest mercantile community of India, generated wealth for the nation through their remarkable efforts. Their Marwari offshoots were appointed by many rulers as ministers, advisors and diwans and were recognised as the first philanthropists in India. The Marwari Heritage takes the reader on a voyage of discovery of the Marwaris who migrated from Rajputana, Haryana, Malwa and its adjoining regions to other parts of India. They braved trials and tribulations in unchartered territories, supporting others of their community, never losing faith in their ability to succeed, and focused on their goal, they became the uncrowned kings, first of trade and business, and later of industry. They joined the freedom struggle with a true spirit of patriotism, philanthropy and active political involvement. Many courted imprisonment and even achieved martyrdom. Today, the roots of the Marwari community are deeply enmeshed in the social, cultural and economic fabric of India. Their innate psyche of giving back to society has seen them donate generously to education, empowerment of women and vocational training leading to employment. Shedding some traditions and retaining many, they have stepped into the modern age, achieving an enviable cultural mix. At the helm of most successful entrepreneurial enterprises, their focus on innovation and technological advancement has resulted in governments of several countries seeking their advice on economic growth. Of the many who have left an indelible mark on the history, socio-political and economic foundations of the country, this book is enriched with rich cameos of some of these ‘greats’ and the reader derives insights into numerous newly discovered and hitherto unrecorded facts. The younger generation of Marwaris continue to dream big and build on the foundations their forefathers planted. They continue to grow from strength to strength, marching towards new horizons. The plethora of welfare schemes and trusts responsible for development of the nation’s needy continue to be monitored with precision. Meticulously researched over five years and richly illustrated with over 100 rare, coloured photographs, paintings, and 600 black and white photographs, illustrations and rare documents published for the first time, readers have much to feast their eyes on. This pictorial book also serves as an inspiration to any and everyone who dares to dream and reach for the skies.

Book excerpt: A dramatic historical narrative of the man who stole the secret of tea from China In 1848, the British East India Company, having lost its monopoly on the tea trade, engaged Robert Fortune, a Scottish gardener, botanist, and plant hunter, to make a clandestine trip into the interior of China—territory forbidden to foreigners—to steal the closely guarded secrets of tea horticulture and manufacturing. For All the Tea in China is the remarkable account of Fortune's journeys into China—a thrilling narrative that combines history, geography, botany, natural science, and old-fashioned adventure. Disguised in Mandarin robes, Fortune ventured deep into the country, confronting pirates, hostile climate, and his own untrustworthy men as he made his way to the epicenter of tea production, the remote Wu Yi Shan hills. One of the most daring acts of corporate espionage in history, Fortune's pursuit of China's ancient secret makes for a classic nineteenth-century adventure tale, one in which the fate of empires hinges on the feats of one extraordinary man.

The first half of the cookbook offers context: India’s historical relationship to medicinal beverages and its relationship to tea and chai; a primer on the principles of Ayurveda; and detailed notes on the Ayurvedic considerations of the cooking tool and attributes of nearly a hundred fruits, herbs, and spices featured in the cookbook. This section also elaborates on the concept of Rasa, the six essential flavors (sweet, sour, spicy, salty, bitter, and astringent) and then encourages readers to explore the recipes through this renewed lens of flavor. Enjoy recipes for several dozen brews and tisanes in Seven Pots of Tea as well as many kinds of chai from India, as well as several dozen nosh recipes. As a cookbook, it is designed to broaden a tea-enthusiasts’ appreciation beyond the varieties of tea-leaves. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there is enormous public interest in biodiversity, food sourcing, and sustainable agriculture, romantic attachments to heirloom seeds and family farms have provoked misleading fantasies of an unrecoverable agrarian past. The reality, as Courtney Fullilove shows, is that seeds are inherently political objects transformed by the ways they are gathered, preserved, distributed, regenerated, and improved. In The Profit of the Earth, Fullilove unearths the history of American agricultural development and of seeds as tools and talismans put in its service. Organized into three thematic parts, The Profit of the Earth is a narrative history of the collection, circulation, and preservation of seeds. Fullilove begins with the political economy of agricultural improvement, recovering the efforts of the US Patent Office and the nascent US Department of Agriculture to import seeds and cuttings for free distribution to American farmers. She then turns to immigrant agricultural knowledge, exploring how public and private institutions attempting to boost midwestern wheat yields drew on the resources of willing and unwilling settlers. Last, she explores the impact of these cereal monocultures on biocultural diversity, chronicling a fin-de-siècle Ohio pharmacist’s attempt to source Purple Coneflower from the diminishing prairie. Through these captivating narratives of improvisation, appropriation, and loss, Fullilove explores contradictions between ideologies of property rights and common use that persist in national and international development—ultimately challenging readers to rethink fantasies of global agriculture’s past and future.
