Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Institution of the Society of the Cincinnati: Together With the Roll of the Original, Hereditary, and Honorary Members of the Order, in the State of New Jersey, From 1783 to 1866 Eighty-three years ago, at the cantonment of the American army on the banks of the Hudson river, the officers who for eight years had led the forces of the United Colonies, met for the purpose of founding a Society, which would perpetuate the attachments formed during a long period of hardship and privation. We should not be surprised that their plan assumed an hereditary shape, and that they determined that the Society there formed should endure as long as they should endure, or any of their male posterity. Many dear friendships and memories had grown into life since 1776, and naturally they desired to do something to retain them; and doubtless they thought that coming generations in the then young Republic, would do honor to their memory as the founders of a Government that was open to all. Book excerpt: For almost two centuries, historians have struggled to explain the extraordinary duel that killed Alexander Hamilton, the nation's first Secretary of the Treasury, and ended Vice President Aaron Burr's political career. In A Fatal Friendship, the distinguished political scientist and writer Arnold Rogow argues that the roots of the fatal encounter lay not in Burr's (admittedly flawed) political and private conduct hut, rather, in Hamilton's conflicted history and character. Rogow's brilliant analysis changes and deepens our understanding of honor, politics, and friendship in the early American Republic. - Publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Although the friendship between George Washington and James Madison was eclipsed in the early 1790s by the alliances of Madison with Jefferson and Washington with Hamilton, their collaboration remains central to the constitutional revolution that launched the American experiment in republican government. Washington relied heavily on Madison's advice, pen, and legislative skill, while Madison found Washington's prestige indispensable for achieving his goals for the new nation. Together, Stuart Leibiger argues, Washington and Madison struggled to conceptualize a political framework that would respond to the majority without violating minority rights. Stubbornly refusing to sacrifice either of these objectives, they cooperated in helping to build and implement a powerful, extremely republican constitution. Observing Washington and Madison in light of their special relationship, Leibiger argues against a series of misconceptions about the two men. Madison emerges as neither a strong nationalist of the Hamiltonian variety nor a political consolidationist; he did not retreat from nationalism to states' rights in the 1790s, as other historians have charged. Washington, far from being a majestic figurehead, exhibits a strong constitutional vision and firm control of his administration. By examining closely Washington and Madison's correspondence and personal visits, Leibiger shows how a marriage of political convenience between two members of the Chesapeake elite grew into a genuine companionship fostered by historical events and a mutual interest in agriculture and science. The development of their friendship, and eventual estrangement, mirrors in fascinating ways the political development of the early Republic."--Abebooks.com viewed Sept. 25, 2023.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1783, the officers of the Continental Army created the Society of the Cincinnati. This veterans' organization was to preserve the memory of the revolutionary struggle and pursue the officers' common interest in outstanding pay and pensions. Henry Knox and Frederick Steuben were the society's chief organizers; George Washington himself served as president. Soon, a nationally distributed South Carolina pamphlet accused the Society of treachery; it would lead to the creation of a hereditary nobility in the United States and subvert republicanism into aristocracy; it was a secret government, a puppet of the French monarchy; its charitable fund would be used for bribes. These were only some of the accusations made against the Society. These were, however, unjustified. The author of this book explores why a part of the revolutionary leadership accused another of subversion in the difficult 1780s, and how the political culture of this period predisposed many leading Americans to think of the Cincinnati as a conspiracy.

Their later divergence demonstrates how wartime unity gave way to competing visions for the new nation, making clear that there was no single founding ideal--only compromise.

Book excerpt: Genealogists and other historical researchers have valued the first two editions of this work, often referred to as the genealogist's bible."" The new edition continues that tradition. Intended as a handbook and a guide to selecting, locating, and using appropriate primary and secondary resources, The Source also functions as an instructional tool for novice genealogists and a refresher course for experienced researchers. More than 30 experts in this field--genealogists, historians, librarians, and archivists--prepared the 20 signed chapters, which are well written, easy to read, and include many helpful hints for getting the most out of whatever information is acquired. Each chapter ends with an extensive bibliography and is further enriched by tables, black-and-white illustrations, and examples of documents. Eight appendixes include the expected contact information for groups and institutions that persons studying genealogy and history need to find. ""
