Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Henicopidae of America North of Mexico The genus Henicops was proposed by Newport in 1844 for two species, H. maculatus, from Van Diemen Land, and H. emarginatus, from New Zealand. Twenty-four years later Meinert described from Europe a species obviously related to these, placing it under a new genus as Lamyctes fulvicornis; but by common consent subsequent workers have, until recently, dropped Lamyctes as a synonym of Henicops. However, in 1901, Pocock restudied Newport's species and pointed out that maculatus, which he specified as the type of Henicops, differed from the European species in having the tarsi of the fourteenth and fifteenth pairs of legs, six segmented and those of the anterior pairs trisegmented, the last three pairs of legs in fulvicornis having the tarsi only bisegmented and the anterior legs having the tarsi wholly undivided. In accordance with these important differences Pocock again recognized Lamyctes as a distinct genus, at the same time describing two new genera evidently closely allied, Haasiella and Paralamyctes. Other genera having more or less close affinities with Henicops and Lamyctes have also been described by Silvestri and by the present writer. Silvestri and Pocock place these genera, which, it may be noted, occur in the main in the Southern Hemisphere, in a family Henicopidae in contrast particularly with the Lithobiidae, including Lithobius and allies which abound for the most part in the Northern Hemisphere; but Verhoeff in his recent revision of the Lithobiomorpha in Die klassen und ordnungen des thierreichs (1907, 5, p. 245f), does not recognize the family, denying the sufficiency of the basis for it. Careful study of the genera of the Lithobiomorpha, however, makes it very obvious that these (omitting those of the Cermatobiidae) fall into two compact and clearly separated groups and that, as one of these, the Henicopidae must be given recognition as a distinct and well-defined family. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Monograph of the Sphingidae of America, North of Mexico I have drawn liberally for my descriptions on Prof. F ernald's work, and have freely reproduced the original descriptions of larvae and imagos where they were sufficiently full, in all cases, however, comparing them with the insects themselves where possible. Prof. Riley has very kindly placed at my disposal all his notes in the family, and I have made use of them in many cases to solve doubts, without special acknowledgement. There is hardly a collector or collection that has not in some way contributed or aided in this paper at odd times and often unknown to himself, and all have my sincere thanks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Hemiptera of American North of Mexico: Excepting the Aphididae, Coccidae and Aleurodidae The first draft Of this catalogue was completed more than two years ago and as there was then no prospect Of its early publication, a Check List giving the classification, synonymy and dates for all the species was prepared and, through the kindness of Mr. 7111. T. Davis of New York, was published by the New York Entomological Society. The introductory matter given below is largely a repetition of that published in the Check List and the numbering of the species in this catalogue has been made to correspond with that in the Check List to facilitate ready reference from one to the other, the species added Since the publication Of that list having been interpolated in fractional form. A summary of the rules used by me in working out the nomenclature of the catalogue was published in March, 1916, in the Annals of the Entomological Society of America and need not be repeated here. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Check List of the Hemiptera (Excepting the Alphididae, Aleurodidae and Coccidae) Of America, North of Mexico In the nomenclature of the genera a few questions arose for which I could find no answer among the decisions of the International Com mittee and in such cases I was obliged to use my best judgment. For one thing I have refused absolutely to accept as valid any genus for which no type species can be fixed under the International Rules. A genus founded, even if described, without the mention of an in cluded valid species is a nomen nudum until a species has been as signed to it and then the genus dates from the inclusion of such species. If we were to accept as valid a genus without a type we practically invalidate our entire plan of genotypes and found our sys tem on usage instead; a rule which certainly would prove far more difficult in its application, even if stability by this plan were possible, which is questionable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Buprestidae of North America, Exclusive of Mexico: A Catalogue Including Synonomy, Bibliography, Distribution, Type Locality and Hosts of Each Species The first requirement in undertaking any problem in Entomology, be it of a systematic or an economic nature, is a comprehensive knowledge of the literature on the subject. The working up of a more or less complete bibliography, is then, one of the first essentials and is often a task requiring considerable time, especially for workers who have only limited library facilities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synopsis of the Families and Genera of the Hymenoptera of America, North of Mexico: Together With a Catalogue of the Described Species, and Bibliography The study of the Hymenoptera of our country has not kept pace with some of the other orders from the want of an introductory work in our own language. Westwood's invaluable Introduction to the Modern Classification of Insects, while partly supplying the want, is insufficient, and at the present expensive and difficult to obtain. The want is especially felt by those who have not access to large scientific libraries, and many are discouraged from attempting the study by the difficulties and expense of acquiring the necessary litera ture, with the added difficulties of the foreign languages. The writer has been frequently appealed to and requested to indi cate such books as will enable a beginner to separate even the fami lies and genera. The impossibility of obtaining any works in the English language, and the almost equally hopeless chance of deter mining the species, have doubtless deterred many from aiding in the development of the study of probably the most interesting order of insects. Other extensive orders, as the Coleoptera and Lepidoptera, have numerous votaries from the aids furnished by elementary works on classification, and until similar assistance is given, very little progress can be expected in the study of the Hymenoptera, notwithstanding the fact that there is no order of insects more extensive and varied in structure, and certainly none more interesting in the habits of its members. Students are so few, in fact, that the greater part of the material collected together in the larger families has been very im perfectly studied, and our knowledge of the characters is very in complete, so that years of careful study will be necessary before a classification can be produced that will be approximately complete. As a step in that direction, however, it has been suggested that the publication of a series of synoptic tables giving the leading charac ters, as far as known, of the families and genera, would prove a. Great aid to the student and possibly induce many to collect and study these interesting creatures. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
