Book excerpt: *Selected as One of the Best Books of the 21st Century by The New York Times* *Named a Best Book of the Year by The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, NPR, Broadly, BuzzFeed (Nonfiction), The Undefeated, Library Journal (Biography/Memoirs), The Washington Post (Nonfiction), Southern Living (Southern), Entertainment Weekly, and The New York Times Critics* In this powerful, provocative, and universally lauded memoir—winner of the Andrew Carnegie Medal and finalist for the Kirkus Prize—genre-bending essayist and novelist Kiese Laymon “provocatively meditates on his trauma growing up as a black man, and in turn crafts an essential polemic against American moral rot” (Entertainment Weekly). In Heavy, Laymon writes eloquently and honestly about growing up a hard-headed black son to a complicated and brilliant black mother in Jackson, Mississippi. From his early experiences of sexual violence, to his suspension from college, to time in New York as a college professor, Laymon charts his complex relationship with his mother, grandmother, anorexia, obesity, sex, writing, and ultimately gambling. Heavy is a “gorgeous, gutting…generous” (The New York Times) memoir that combines personal stories with piercing intellect to reflect both on the strife of American society and on Laymon’s experiences with abuse. By attempting to name secrets and lies he and his mother spent a lifetime avoiding, he asks us to confront the terrifying possibility that few in this nation actually know how to responsibly love, and even fewer want to live under the weight of actually becoming free. “A book for people who appreciated Roxane Gay’s memoir Hunger” (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel), Heavy is defiant yet vulnerable, an insightful, often comical exploration of weight, identity, art, friendship, and family through years of haunting implosions and long reverberations. “You won’t be able to put [this memoir] down…It is packed with reminders of how black dreams get skewed and deferred, yet are also pregnant with the possibility that a kind of redemption may lie in intimate grappling with black realities” (The Atlantic).

This book was released on 2019 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowing and Seeing is teachings given by the Myanmarese meditation master, the Most Venerable Pa-Auk Tawya Sayadaw, at a two-month retreat for monks and nuns in Taiwan. In strict accordance with the standard Pali Texts, the Most Venerable Pa-Auk Tawya Sayadaw gives a practical overview of how you develop absorption (jhāna) with mindfulness-of-breathing, the thirty-two parts of your own body and that of others (near and far), repulsiveness of the body, the ten kasiṇas and four immaterial states. He then explains how you use the 'strong and powerful' jhāna concentration to perfect lovingkindness, compassion, appreciative joy, equanimity, recollection-of-The-Buddha, foulness, and recollection-of-death. Next, he explains how, with the light of jhāna, you penetrate the delusion of compactness and see the sub-atomic particles of materiality, and see the ultimate materiality of your own body, that of others, and throughout the universe; how likewise you see the cognitive-processes of your own mind and that of others; how likewise you examine your materiality and mentality of past lives, your present life and future lives (on this and other planes); and how likewise you develop the remaining knowledges till 'Your mind knows and sees Nibbāna directly: it is fully aware of the (unformed) Nibbāna as object.' The Sayadaw also answers questions from meditators at the retreat, on details regarding meditation, related matters, and the Bodhisatta Path etc. Finally, there is a stirring talk where he exhorts us to 'breathe according to The Buddha's instructions', followed by a talk on the most superior type of offering. Without the help of counseling and an adequate support system, a person might slip into a treacherous life of confusion. Author Eric Merriweather suffered much the same fate. After a horrific childhood happening, his formidable years took on a whole new meaning. As he developed into a young man, his confusion toward his sexuality spiraled out of control. Slipping in and out of relationships with both men and women, the void for love in his life only began to grow and deepen. By the time the shocking news of an HIV diagnosis came in, Eric knew he had to change his life. He knew he couldn't do it alone. Eric sought out the counsel of his local church, pastor, and friends. Slowly but surely, with lots of prayer, Eric slowly began to put his life back together and address the deep-rooted pains left from his childhood. He wholly accepted his need for Christ, and the emptiness he felt for so long disappeared. It's never too late, and he realized the important thing about life is Knowing Your Identity in Christ. This is a must-read for any person who's ever struggled with feelings and thoughts of homosexuality after molestation and abuse while trying to live a life appointed of God. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF A NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARD A USA TODAY BESTSELLER "A gifted writer, astonishingly adept at nuance, narration, and the politics of passion."—Toni Morrison Set in London of the 1660s and of the early twenty-first century, The Weight of Ink is the interwoven tale of two women of remarkable intellect: Ester Velasquez, an emigrant from Amsterdam who is permitted to scribe for a blind rabbi, just before the plague hits the city; and Helen Watt, an ailing historian with a love of Jewish history. When Helen is summoned by a former student to view a cache of newly discovered seventeenth-century Jewish documents, she enlists the help of Aaron Levy, an American graduate student as impatient as he is charming, and embarks on one last project: to determine the identity of the documents' scribe, the elusive "Aleph." Electrifying and ambitious, The Weight of Ink is about women separated by centuries—and the choices and sacrifices they must make in order to reconcile the life of the heart and mind.

While it seems that other people have a deeper understanding of the spiritual forces that are out there, you still want answers. As a Christian, you may have read biblical accounts of unclean spirits, however, you do not fully understand some of the things that have been going on around you. The Lord instructed Bishop Renteria to write Understanding the Spiritual Realm using all of the personal supernatural experiences the Holy Spirit has helped him get through in his life. If you want to understand the spiritual realm, this book will bring insight to your personal walk with the Lord. It will bring light and revelation through the power of the Holy Spirit. Author Miguel Renteria gets right to the point about the spirit realm by providing definitions of key biblical words, along with Greek and Hebrew descriptions, to help you gain a better understanding of spiritual realities. Learn how the enemy operates, and how he desperately desires to bring fear and hopelessness into your consciousness, leaving you in a state of spiritual exhaustion. Allow the Holy Spirit to use this book to bring deliverance and victory in your spiritual life.

These carefully selected works can be fiction, non-fiction, historical documents or even biographies. We will always select for you three great works to instigate your mind, this time the topic is:Coming of Age - Great Expectations by Charles Dickens - The Waves by Virginia Woolf - Little Women by Louisa May AlcottGreat Expectations is the thirteenth novel by Charles Dickens and his penultimate completed novel: a bildungsroman that depicts the personal growth and personal development of an orphan nicknamed Pip. Great Expectations is full of extreme imagerypoverty, prison ships and chains, and fights to the death and has a colourful cast of characters who have entered popular culture. The Waves is a 1931 novel by Virginia Woolf. It is considered her most experimental work, and consists of soliloquies spoken by the book's six characters: Bernard, Susan, Rhoda, Neville, Jinny, and Louis. Also important is Percival, the seventh character, though readers never hear him speak in his own voice. The soliloquies that span the characters' lives are broken up by nine brief third-person interludes detailing a coastal scene at varying stages in a day from sunrise to sunset. Little Women is a novel by U.S. author Louisa May Alcott, which was originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869. Following the lives of the four March sistersMeg, Jo, Beth and Amythe novel details their passage from childhood to womanhood and is loosely based on the author and her three sisters. This is one of many books in the series 3 Books To Know. If you liked this book, look for the other titles in the series, we are sure you will like some of the topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about how to know God's will through the scriptures and wisdom instead of by supposedly hearing God's voice. All my books can be read online for free at http://wayneodonnell.com. “Freely you have received, freely give” (Mt. 10:8). This booklet is included in and comprises several sections in my book “Paul’s Decision Making in Acts: Anti-Charismatic Pro-Jewish Commentary on Acts.” In 1980, Garry Friesen wrote "Decision Making and the Will of God," a book that debunked the traditional view that God leads by inward impressions into His perfect, specific will. But Bible teachers continue teach prayer is a two-way conversation; churches continue to question pastoral candidates about their ‘call’ to the ministry; and Christians continue to try to discern God’s inner voice to make decisions. Maybe it would help if we had more scholarly journal articles on the topic. Grudem. I ... categorized the articles published in three refereed evangelical journals for the last five years [before 2000]: Westminster Theological Journal, … Trinity Journal, … and … the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society. Not counting book reviews, there were 257 scholarly articles [on all topics]. … [But regarding] God’s guidance in our daily lives. Zero articles. Yet some understanding of God’s guidance affects every Christian every day of his or her life! … Either Garry Friesen is right on that topic, or he’s wrong. … We should expect to see many more scholars contributing articles and books supporting and developing their viewpoints. Christians in the book of Acts made their decisions by the Word and Wisdom, not by listening for inward impressions. I would love to read an exposition of the Book of Acts that showed Paul, the other apostles, and their co-workers, making most of their decisions by listening for inward impressions, but it would require reading that doctrine into the text, rather than expositing it out of the text. Friesen. In order to arrive at the conclusion of the traditional approach [to decision-making], it is necessary to water down the biblical examples and spice up the biblical teaching. Examples [like in Acts] are watered down to be less miraculous than they really are [so we can think we’re doing them too]. Biblical teaching [like in the epistles] must be spiced up to be more specific than it really is [for example, a promise to Israel to “guide you continually” (Is. 58:11), doesn’t actually say anything about Christians being guided by ‘inward impressions’]. Paul made most of his decisions by the Word and Wisdom, not by inward impressions, and only rarely by direct revelation, even though he was the apostle on the cutting-edge of Jesus’ mission to bring the gospel to the Gentiles. Most of Paul’s decisions in Acts can be explained 17 principles he followed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the importance of identifying and addressing misconceptions for the successful teaching and learning of science across all levels of science education from elementary school to high school. It suggests teaching approaches based on research data to address students’ common misconceptions. Detailed descriptions of how these instructional approaches can be incorporated into teaching and learning science are also included. The science education literature extensively documents the findings of studies about students’ misconceptions or alternative conceptions about various science concepts. Furthermore, some of the studies involve systematic approaches to not only creating but also implementing instructional programs to reduce the incidence of these misconceptions among high school science students. These studies, however, are largely unavailable to classroom practitioners, partly because they are usually found in various science education journals that teachers have no time to refer to or are not readily available to them. In response, this book offers an essential and easily accessible guide.
