Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You are what you love. But you might not love what you think. In this book, award-winning author James K. A. Smith shows that who and what we worship fundamentally shape our hearts. And while we desire to shape culture, we are not often aware of how culture shapes us. We might not realize the ways our hearts are being taught to love rival gods instead of the One for whom we were made. Smith helps readers recognize the formative power of culture and the transformative possibilities of Christian practices. He explains that worship is the "imagination station" that incubates our loves and longings so that our cultural endeavors are indexed toward God and his kingdom. This is why the church and worshiping in a local community of believers should be the hub and heart of Christian formation and discipleship. Following the publication of his influential work Desiring the Kingdom, Smith received numerous requests from pastors and leaders for a more accessible version of that book's content. No mere abridgment, this new book draws on years of Smith's popular presentations on the ideas in Desiring the Kingdom to offer a fresh, bottom-up rearticulation. The author creatively uses film, literature, and music illustrations to engage readers and includes new material on marriage, family, youth ministry, and faith and work. He also suggests individual and communal practices for shaping the Christian life.

Book excerpt: When the Heart Speaks is a recollection of the past twenty years of my life, which includes serving in the army and traveling around the world to places I dreamed about as a child, but never imagine I would actually go there, and for that I am forever grateful. When the Heart Speaks will allow you become a part of me, for a brief moment or however long you choose to do so. You will experience the emotional rollercoaster ride of life, as well as the trail and tribulations one goes through, when they keep things inside to long or don’t know how to express themselves, when those feelings are pleading to come out, but you refuse to release them or don’t know how to release them. I’ve learned when that happens, in my opinion; GOD (The Real Author) brings you to a point in your life, with the assistance of your heart, and lets you know that’s enough. They’re trying to tell you, to get your act together, if you’re not living the way you should, especially if you know you’ve been given blessings from above, and still choose to go down the wrong path. In my case, I haven’t listen or paid attention to the warning signs that were there, so now it’s either their way or the byway. I’ve decided it would be their way. Thank-you GOD!

Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Book excerpt: This book celebrates the great stripping process of aging, dying and spiritual awakening. Beautiful, poignant, at times humorous, transcendent, messy, down to earth, refreshingly honest--the book explores death, and more importantly, being alive, through a rich mix of personal stories and spiritual reflections. Joan writes about her mother's final years and about being with friends and teachers at the end of their lives. She shares her own journey with aging, anal cancer, and other life challenges. She explores what it means to be alive in what may be the collapse of civilization and the possible extinction of life on earth due to climate change. Pointing beyond deficiency stories, future fantasies, and oppressive self-improvement projects, Joan invites an awakening to the immediacy of this moment and the wonder of ordinary life. She demonstrates a pathless path of genuine transformation, seeing all of life as sacred and worthy of devotion, and finding joy in the full range of our human experience.

The following words have become absolute reality: "I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth." (John 16, 12-13). This book of my teachings has been formed from the lessons of love and charity and dictated to you through human understanding. Since ancient times I have entrusted to you my teachings, through my envoys, my emissaries, my interpreters, and you have used it to create myths and traditions. But you will not fulfill your purpose unless you meditate and study this lesson with respect and love. Truly I say to you that he who meditates and analyzes the teachings of my Book, with a true desire to elevate his knowledge, will acquire the light for his spirit and he will feel Me nearer to him.

The Holy Spirit empowers us, guides us, and enables us to grow and endure in our relationship with the Father through Jesus Christ. Often the most misunderstood member of the Trinity, the person of the Spirit continues to attract attention today amidst church revivals and renewals. In this new edition of his classic Keep in Step with the Spirit, J. I. Packer seeks to help Christians reaffirm the biblical call to holiness and the Spirit s role in keeping our covenant with God. Packer guides us through the riches and depth of the Spirit s work, assesses versions of holiness and the charismatic life, and shows how Christ must always be at the centre of true Spirit-led ministry. A new chapter explores Christian assurance. With abiding relevance and significance, Keep in Step with the Spirit sets forth vital knowledge for healthy and joyous Christian living, through understanding and experience of God the Holy Spirit. When faced with death, something innately clicks on. Succinctly, we must survive and this is what forces us to look inside and outside ourselves. Those who survived are successful because holistically they have made this connection. You, I, and the environment, are the questions asked of a source greater than ourselves. With reverence, ask and find out the answers as they relate to you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his book “Overcoming Through the Spirit” the author shows the world of today to be no different than the world in the time of the apostles. The Apostle John wrote, “the whole world lieth in wickedness” (1 John 5:19) Today there is also false doctrines, false prophets and teachers, and people in all nations proclaiming themselves to be something they are not. The foremost reason I have written this book is that I was deeply impressed by God to write this book and entitle it “Overcoming through the Spirit.” I began a writing ministry in September of 1994 that is continuing at present writing articles for the church bulletin based on the messages preached by the ministry. These articles comprise most of the essential doctrines on a Christian's overcoming faith. When adding a comment from a church bulletin article on a particular thought, I reference it with an endnote. While a book instructing someone to overcome and have victory in their life is needful, experiential knowledge is the best teacher and way to learn the art of overcoming through the help of the Spirit and the word of God. I desire that this book be a great source to all who read it on maintaining an upright spirit and living for God in truth and holiness through the Spirit and word of Jesus Christ working in their hearts (Philippians 2:13).
