Book excerpt: Two popular American Buddhist teachers provide an overview of insight meditation, offering a “skillful blend of pragmatic instruction, psychological insight, and perennial wisdom” (Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence) In Seeking the Heart of Wisdom, Joseph Goldstein and Jack Kornfield present the central teachings and practices of insight meditation in a clear and personal language. The path of insight meditation is a journey of understanding our bodies, our minds, and our lives, of seeing clearly the true nature of experience. The authors guide the reader in developing the openness and compassion that are at the heart of this spiritual practice. For those already treading the path, as well as those just starting out, this book will be a welcome companion along the way. Among the topics covered are: • The hindrances to meditation—ranging from doubt and fear to painful knees—and skillful means of overcoming them • How compassion can arise in response to the suffering we see in our own lives and in the world • How to integrate a life of responsible action and service with a meditative life based on non-attachment Useful exercises are presented alongside the teachings to help readers deepen their understanding of the subjects.

Book excerpt: "In this book, the author describes a model of theological interpretation of the Bible that brings together different approaches to reading it in a way that is appropriate to the nature of the text as Scripture while also making use of the best resources that have been developed in the long history of biblical study. In the context of the theological interpretation of Scripture, the goal of gaining a wise heart takes on yet another layer of meaning. Wisdom includes making full use of the skills of critical interpretation of the Bible and, at the same time, integrating this knowledge into a life of spiritual integrity and unity that is symbolized by the biblical metaphor of the heart. A wise heart is one that can bring the best of critical study and spiritual devotion together in service to God and others"--

Book excerpt: “It may seem bizarre, but in my opinion, science offers a surer path to God than religion…science has actually advanced to the point where what were formerly religious questions can be seriously tackled” (Paul Davies, Astrophysicist). Anthony Walsh’s latest riposte to atheistic arguments against God's existence draws on Natural Theology, a knowledge of God based on evidence from both the natural and social sciences. Covering everything from the Big Bang and the origins of life to the mystery of intelligent consciousness, Walsh makes even the most technical scientific writings accessible to the general reader and tackles a question few books on the relationship between science and religion have ever sought to address: how does Christianity positively affect societies, families, and individuals in terms of democracy, justice, happiness, health, and prosperity?

Book excerpt: The twenty-first century has witnessed unprecedented and revolutionary scientific, theological, technological, philosophical, and sociocultural changes, many of which have churned serious challenges to Christianity. In the face of these challenges, can a believer realistically walk with God? Walking with God in the Twenty-First Century examines the prospects of a devout Christian walking with God today, and it addresses a number of questions that all Christians must consider: Is Gods desire to walk with a devout Christian in the twenty-first century an illusion? What does it mean to walk with God? What are the major challenges to practicing Christianity in this century? How is the devil operating undercover to prevent believers from walking with God? Can a Christian realistically live a life fully devoted to God in the twenty-first century? Are there any provisions for a committed believer to practice Christianity in this church age? Pastors, church leaders, theology students, and Christians of all stripes should consider these new challenges and seek out Gods answers. In this way we can be equipped to walk with God in the most corrupt of environments, becoming a true disciple of Christ with a deepened commitment to obey his commandments.

Book excerpt: Many of the fundamental questions philosophers and social scientists ask, necessarily entail examining the role of the social institutions. Social institutions are synchronized systems of self-enforcing regulative rules, behaviors, and practices designed for the perpetuation of important societal functions and which give durable structure to social interactions. Everything in human life entails aspects of one or more of these institutions. There are people in academia that want to sweep “dead white males” under the historical carpet, but two dead white men we cannot ignore when examining the social institutions are Plato and Aristotle. These men have been at the heart of Western culture for more than two millennia and still continue to shape it. There are few social or political issues today that were not thought about by these two great men. They had a lot to say about the social institutions, but they had contrasting visions on most things pertaining to them that may be broadly viewed as liberal and conservative, or what economist/philosopher Thomas Sowell calls unconstrained and constrained visionaries, respectively. The book is a scholarly work on these two foundational philosophers, but will also serve as a supplementary text for a sociology class (introduction to sociology, or one specifically devoted to the social institutions).

This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the benefits of Christianity for all, the degradation of our culture since the 1950s, the pernicious effects that cultural Marxism has had on Western cultures, and the loss of religious freedom as the Founders envisioned it due to a number of Supreme Court rulings. We cannot understand the culture war and cultural debasement until we understand cultural Marxism. Cultural Marxism has been "hiding in plain sight" since the 1930s with the immigration to the United States of a cadre of intellectuals from Germany who brought with them the folderol of critical theory, political correctness, gender neutrality, radical feminism, and moral relativism. This intellectual moonshine is designed to weaken family structure and individual morality, and it has worked. The ultimate purpose of cultural Marxism is to destroy Western civilization from within. This goal is clearly and unambiguously stated in their books and articles. In numerous places in these books and articles, cultural Marxists are adamant that if socialism is ever to come to America the two epicenters of Western morality, the family and Christianity, will have to be destroyed by slow, stealthy, and incremental attacks on them. They have been aided in their efforts by anti-Christian rulings by the United States Supreme Court since the 1940s. I do not claim in any sense that the Supreme Court is engaged in a conspiracy with cultural Marxists. Their rulings have been based on a reading of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment that its authors would not recognize, and have used this clause to eviscerate the Free Exercise Clause—America’s “first freedom.” The Court has purged Christianity from the public square, and in doing so it has unwittingly helped the cultural Marxist agenda by spiritually disarming America.
