Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Propagation of Christianity, Vol. 2 of 3: Among the Heathen, Since the Reformation In October 1792, a few Baptist ministers, assembled at Kettering in Northamptonshire, united in instituting a Society for Propagating the Gospel among the Heathen. They, at the same time, opened a subscription for this purpose; but the whole sum contributed on that occasion amounted only to 13:2:6. As soon, however, as the object of the Society was known, they met with further encouragement and support, not only from the members of their own communion, but from Christians of other denominations. About the same time, Mr John Thomas, who had of late years made some attempts for propagating the gospel in Bengal, was in London, endeavouring to establish a fund for sending missionaries to that country, and was himself anxious to obtain a suitable companion to return with him. He had previously made two voyages to Bengal as surgeon of the Oxford East Indiaman; and when there the second time, he met with a few pious people who agreed to have a prayer-meeting together, and this led on to his preaching to them every Sabbath evening. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Gospel: The Heart of Christ "The fourth Gospel is the Heart of Christ," is the euthusiastic language of Ernesti, from whom we borrow the words of our title-page. Expositors both ancient and modern, who regard the four Gospels as veritable history, have generally manifested the same preference. "Written by the hand of an angel," says Herder; and Schleiermacher, who with his school delighted in "the mystic of the four Evangelists," says that his soul must have been pervaded by eternal childlike Christmas joys. But sentiments of admiration are not evidence to other minds who do not find through John those depths of living water which those who are more contemplative have ever found. No book has been the subject of a more searching or a more adverse criticism than the fourth Gospel. The history of the controversy, with the motives of it, is exceedingly interesting and instructive, and I had sketched it in two chapters of this work, but was obliged to omit them in order to bring the volume within convenient size. It is the controversy of half a century between some of the ablest theologians and profoundest scholars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first presentation of John Wesley's doctrinal teachings in a systematic form that is also faithful to Wesley's own writings in ebook format. Wesley was a prolific writer and commentator on Scripture, yet it is commonly held that he was not systematic or internally consistent in his theology and doctrinal teachings. On the contrary, Thomas C. Oden intends to demonstrate here that Wesley displayed a remarkable degree of consistency over sixty years of preaching and ministry. The book helps readers to grasp Wesley's essential teachings in an accessible form so that the person desiring to go directly to Wesley's own writings (which fill eighteen volumes) will know exactly where to turn.

Book excerpt: Amid a revival of apologetics, “few things could be more useful than an acquaintance with how Christian faith was defended down through the ages,” say the editors in their introduction to this two-part anthology. “Access to both historical and contemporary texts gives us fresh insight into how our fathers in the faith responded to the questions facing them.” Volume 2 in this one-of-a-kind resource takes a sweeping look at apologetics from the Reformation to the present. Readings from twenty-six apologists, including Martin Luther, John Calvin, Blaise Pascal, Jonathan Edwards, Søren Kierkegaard, Francis Schaeffer, Alvin Plantinga, and William Lane Craig are included. With editorial commentary and questions for reflection, Christian Apologetics Past and Present will prove a valuable text for students as well as a unique resource for those interested in defending the faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a “Catholic” novel? This book analyzes the fiction of Graham Greene in a radically new manner, considering in depth its form and content, which rest on the oppositions between secularism and religion. Sampson challenges these distinctions, arguing that Greene has a dramatic contribution to add to their methodological premises. Chapters on Greene’s four “Catholic” novels and two of his “post-Catholic” novels are complemented by fresh insight into the critical importance of his nonfiction. The study paints an image of an inviting yet beguilingly complex literary figure.
