Book excerpt: As the First World War seeps into the psyche of the world, Armenians in the Ottoman Empire have only one goal: to survive. But in a part of the world that has its sights set on destroying every single one of them, the cost of doing so is unimaginably high. Ana Mouradian didn't truly grasp this concept until an attack on her village tore her away from her small-town life, resulting in a loss so great, it leaves her changed forever. Forced to become accustomed to a life on the run, she soon learns more about herself and her past than she could ever bear to live with.As for Andre Abrahamian, he knows exactly how much sacrifice it takes to stay alive in a world that wants to kill him; he would be dead if he didn't. In hiding with his large family and safe for the time being, he now struggles to cope with the payment that he is forced to make every day, even now that the threat of death is long gone. When they unexpectedly meet in a cave etched into the side of a mountain, Ana and Andre are fighting for more than just their lives. Both scapegoats of conflicts larger than man, they are drawn to each other, and soon discover that together, they have the potential to live a life free from debt. To achieve this, however, they must be willing to hand over to one another the last part of their lives that belong to themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1969, Ricahrd Oakes and Adam Fortunate Eagle, then known as Adam Nordwall, instigated an invasion of Alcatraz by American Indians. From the mainland, Fortunate Eagle orchestrated the events, but they assumed an uncontrollable life of their own. Fortunate Eagle provides an intimate memoir of the occupation and the events leading up to it. Accompanied by a variety of photographs capturing the people, places, and actions involved, Heart of the Rock brings these turbulent times vividly to life. From the start, public support was strong. Money poured in from around the country. Sausalito sailors and their "navy" transported supplies and people to the island. San Fransisco restaurants sent Thanksgiving dinner. A school was started; chores and responsibilities were shared by everyone. Alcatraz became home, and American Indians of all tribes became a family. But the occupation lasted two years, and Oakes, who had become it spokesman, left after his stepdaughter's death on the island. Memoranda from the White House recommended doing "anything" to turn the public against the occupation so it could be ended. Water and electricity were cut off, reports of conflict on the island began appearing in the press, and suspicious fires burned five buildings. Nevertheless, the occupation of Alcatraz remains what historian Vine Deloria, Jr. has called "perhaps the most significant Indian action since the Little Bighorn."

BRIAN "HEAD" WELCH is the lead guitarist for the nu metal band Korn. In addition to chart-topping, million-selling records and two GRAMMY awards, their shows fill up arenas and stadiums worldwide. CHRIS HILLMAN helped define the country rock genre by his groundbreaking work with The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas, and the Desert Rose Band. After leaving Kansas, he became one of the most successful Christian producers of all time. RUDY SARZO has been a professional recording artist for more than thirty years and a member of Ozzy Osbourne, Quiet Riot, Whitesnake, Blue Oyster Cult, Yngwie Malmsteen, and DIO. England Dan & JOHN FORD COLEY waved the soft-rock banner loudly in the 1970s, releasing several platinum and gold records in their decade-long partnership and Top 10 hits that are staples of classic rock radio today. With DEZ DICKERSON at his side from 1978 to 1983, Prince became a household name, selling more than one hundred million albums, earning seven Grammys, a Golden Globe, and an Academy Award. SHANE EVANS of Collective Soul dominated 1990s rock and alternative radio, charting an astounding seven number-one hits, nineteen Top 40 singles, and ten million in worldwide sales. NEDRA ROSS and The Ronettes were the first bad girls of rock and roll, racially indefinable, and one of the most exciting acts of their era, ruling the airwaves in the early ’60s with a string of girl-group classics and mini rock operas. RICHIE FURAY of Buffalo Springfield was a major catalyst for the 1960s country folk rock sound. Richie's repeat performance as cofounder of Poco carried on this tradition of great music. MARK FARNER of Grand Funk Railroad earned eleven consecutive RIAA Gold/Platinum Record Awards from 1969 to 1975. They surpassed The Beatles in record sales in 1970. Artists featured exclusively in the e-book are: JERRY NAYLOR is a sixty-year veteran of the music scene and the former lead singer of The Crickets. Naylor witnessed the birth of rock and roll with fellow innovators Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, and Waylon Jennings—all changing the face of popular music. RICK CUA of The Outlaws helped create the Southern rock sound of the ’70s. In its heyday the band played major stadiums and arenas, reveling in the rock and roll lifestyle that included limos, charted planes, and the crazy fan scene. CHUCK GIRARD was a valuable pioneer in the California sound of the early 1960s and contemporary Christian music of the 1970s. In his teens, Girard formed The Castells, which had two Top 20 hits. A decade later he formed Love Song, the first mainstream Christian rock band. KEN HENSLEY of Uriah Heep is regarded as one of the seminal hard-rock acts of the early 1970s. Extremely popular in Europe, the Heep are considered by music historians as one of “The Big Four” of hard rock with sales of more than forty million albums worldwide.

This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journalist Aaron Smith's new memoir holds up a unique mirror to Australia. What he sees is at once amazing, disturbing and revealing. The Rock explores the failings of our nation's character, its unresolved past and its uncertain future from the vantage point of its most northerly outpost, Thursday Island. Smith was the last editor, fearless journalist and the paperboy of Australia's most northerly newspaper, the Torres News, a small independent regional tabloid that, until it folded in late 2019, was the voice of a predominantly Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal readership for 63 years across some of the most remote and little understood communities in Australia. The Rock is a story of self-discovery where Smith grapples to understand a national identity marred by its racist underbelly, where he is transplanted from his white-boy privileged suburban life to being a racial and cultural minority, and an outsider. Peppered with his experiences, Smith gradually and sensitively becomes embedded in island life while vividly capturing the endless and often farcical parade of personalities and politicians including Scott Morrison and Tony Abbott. Smith pulls no punches while he reflects on the history of Terra Australis incognita, dissecting what is truly Australia, and its gaping cultural and moral divide. 'A credit to regional journalism, Aaron carried on the fine tradition of the Torres News holding governments to account and telling stories of everyday life in the Straits, never shying away from controversies, lifting all the rocks and even out foxing prime minister Tony Abbott on his visit to Mabo's grave.' — Stefan Armbruster, SBS 'Aaron Smith makes a huge and extremely valuable contribution to journalism in Australia. With insight and committment he brings issues of national and international significance to audiences in Australia and beyond.' — Dr Tess Newton Cain, Griffith Asia Institute 'Aaron's journalism has provided a rare and valuable insight into issues affecting the Torres Strait Islander community. Navigating cultural protocols and geographical challenges, he has given a voice to some of Australia's most marginalised people and shared important stories that would otherwise have gone unheard.' — Ella Archibald-Binge, Sydney Morning Herald

Book excerpt: The story of two mothers and a father in love with the same daughter, Samuel Shem's At the Heart of the Universe is an epic novel set deep in rural China against the backdrop of an ancient mountain monastery during the time of the one-child-per-family policy. Inspired by the author's experiences as parent of an adopted child, it describes the drama of adoption and the journey of loss and rebirth that can happen when a daughter brings together her adopted mother and father with her birth mother high on a mountaintop. Set in 1991 in Changsha, capital of Hunan province, as a Chinese woman abandons her one-month-old daughter in a pile of celery in a busy market, and then shifting to Changsha ten years later as the daughter returns with her adopted American parents, the story moves across southern China until, high atop Emei San, one of China's "sacred mountains" with a Buddhist temple, the four are brought together in the wilderness—a perilous and explosive time that unleashes their heartbreak and suffering and, remarkably, transcends it to shared compassion, and new beginnings.
