Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You probably suspect, on some level, that computers might be hazardous to your health. You might vaguely remember a study that you read years ago about miscarriages being more frequent for data entry operators. Or you might have run into a co-worker wearing splints and talking ominously about Workers' Comp insurance. Or you might notice that when you use a computer too long, you get stiff and your eyes get dry.But who wants to worry about such things? Surely, the people wearing splints must be malingerers who don't want to work? Surely, the people who design keyboards and terminals must be working to change their products if they are unsafe? Surely, so long as you're a good worker and keep your mind on your job, nothing bad will happen to you?The bad news is: You can be hurt by working at a computer. The good news is that many of the same factors that pose a risk to you are within your own control. You can take action on your own to promote your own health -- whether or not your terminal manufacturer, keyboard designer, medical provider, safety trainer, and boss are working diligently to protect you.The Computer User's Survival Guide looks squarely at all the factors that affect your health on the job, including positioning, equipment, work habits, lighting, stress, radiation, and general health.Through this guide you will learn: a continuum of neutral postures that you can at utilize at different work tasks how radiation drops off with distance and what electrical equipment is responsible for most exposure how modern office lighting is better suited to working on paper than on a screen, and what you can do to prevent glare simple breathing techniques and stretches to keep your body well oxygenated and relaxed, even when you sit all day how reading from a screen puts unique strains on your eyes and what kind of vision breaks will keep you most productive and rested what's going on "under the skin" when your hands and arms spend much of the day mousing and typing, and how you can apply that knowledge to prevent overuse injuries The Computer User's Survival Guide is not a book of gloom and doom. It is a guide to protecting yourself against health risks from your computer, while boosting your effectiveness and your enjoyment of work.

Book excerpt: The Healthy Company is a handbook for directors and executives - and those on their way to getting there. Leading a company today means managing the uses of its resources and relationships and how it deals with the resulting effects over time as these effects will come back to impact the company, negatively or positively, in the future. It is this circle of integrated thinking that is essential to a healthy and sustainable company. The book considers a company's purpose and strategy under an integrated thinking approach. It also takes readers through a history of the company structure itself and the corporate revolutions that have happened along the way. A healthy company needs a healthy board, therefore, good corporate governance and the role of the board is explored. Practical tips and considerations are given for being a director, with FAQs. The successful running of board meetings is covered as well as the role of the board leader, along with a list of features which make for a good Chair. The Healthy Company proffers four matters that should be discussed at every board meeting to keep directors informed and to cultivate better decision-making. A healthy company needs integrated reporting that reflects its integrated thinking approach. This reporting should be internal for management and the board, but should also result in the annual integrated report released to investors and other stakeholders. This book covers the best practice guidance on preparing an integrated report, with FAQs for directors and executives. The Healthy Company offers a seven-step process which focuses on integration and a healthy company for the longer term.

Book excerpt: Most health professionals have to use computers - at least some of the time. Frequently, those computers are personal computers -the generic name for the ones that are variously known as 'IBM compatible' or 'IBM clones' or just PCs. This separates them out from certain other makes such as the Apple Macintosh, the Amstrad dedicated word processor, the Atari, Amiga and a number of others. This book is about PCs. When you need information about your computer when you are busy, you don't want to have to wade through piles of manuals to find what you need. You often need a fairly straightforward piece of information - now. Computers can be infuriating. When they are up and running properly, they can save time and help you to be more productive. When something goes wrong, they can be extremely frustrating. Once you have called in someone else to fix your problem, it is often apparent that the answer to your problem was only a few keystrokes away. This book aims at supplying you with small chunks of information that can aid your productivity, get you out of awkward corners and help you to become more at home with your Pc. It has been my experience - as a health care lecturer and as a regular com puter user - that you need to develop a certain baseline of confidence in working with them.

Book excerpt: This book describes, for the first time in pedagogical form, an approach to computer-based work in complex sociotechnical systems developed over the last 30 years by Jens Rasmussen and his colleagues at Risø National Laboratory in Roskilde, Denmark. This approach is represented by a framework called cognitive work analysis. Its goal is to help designers of complex sociotechnical systems create computer-based information support that helps workers adapt to the unexpected and changing demands of their jobs. In short, cognitive work analysis is about designing for adaptation. The book is divided into four parts. Part I provides a motivation by introducing three themes that tie the book together--safety, productivity, and worker health. The ecological approach that serves as the conceptual basis behind the book is also described. In addition, a glossary of terms is provided. Part II situates the ideas in the book in a broader intellectual context by reviewing alternative approaches to work analysis. The limitations of normative and descriptive approaches are outlined, and the rationale behind the formative approach advocated in this book is explored. Part III describes the concepts that comprise the cognitive work analysis framework in detail. Each concept is illustrated by a case study, and the implications of the framework for design and research are illustrated by example. Part IV unifies the themes of safety, productivity, and health, and shows why the need for the concepts in this book will only increase in the future. In addition, a historical addendum briefly describes the origins of the ideas described in the book.
