We may, for example, use oak boards to build the framework of a house; but the living oak treefrom which the boards came grew from an acorn. The prin cipal difference between the oak wood used in building a house and the acorn from which an oak tree grows is that one is without life and the other is alive. Growing is build ing something alive out of living material. Living things grow because the material out of which they are built can multiply itself. If we placed an oak board on the ground and left it there for ten or fifteen years, we should not expect to find a whole pile of oak boards when we finally came back.
