Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The clock struck midnight as Inspector Davis arrived at the old, abandoned manor on the outskirts of town. He had been called to the scene of a horrific crime - a young woman had been found brutally murdered in one of the rooms. As he entered the dimly lit hallway, a chill ran down his spine. He could sense that something sinister was lurking in the shadows. The floorboards creaked beneath his feet, each step echoing through the empty corridors. The air was thick with the musty scent of decay, mixed with a metallic odor that he knew all too well—the smell of fresh blood. Inspector Davis had seen his share of gruesome crime scenes, but something about this place felt different, almost alive with malevolence. As he made his way to the crime scene, he could hear the murmur of voices coming from one of the adjacent rooms. He cautiously approached the door and listened in. "I can't believe we did it," a voice whispered, tinged with panic. "We had no choice. She was going to ruin everything," another voice replied, cold and resolute. Inspector Davis burst through the door, startling the two figures inside. They were a man and a woman, both looking pale and shaken. The woman's hands were trembling, and the man's shirt was splattered with what appeared to be blood. "What were you two talking about?" he demanded, his voice echoing in the empty room. The man stammered, "We were just discussing... the weather. It's been quite cold lately." His eyes darted around, refusing to meet the inspector's gaze. The inspector narrowed his eyes, knowing they were lying. "You two are suspects in the murder of the young woman upstairs. I suggest you start talking now." The woman broke down in tears, her sobs punctuated by gasps for air. "It's not what you think," she choked out. "She... she wasn't human. Not anymore." Inspector Davis raised an eyebrow. "Explain yourself." The man placed a comforting hand on the woman's shoulder. "My name is Thomas Blackwood, and this is my sister, Emily. We're the last living descendants of the Blackwood family. The woman upstairs... she was blackmailing us, threatening to expose our secrets if we didn't pay up." Emily wiped her tears, her voice steadier now. "But it wasn't just about money. She knew things, Inspector. Things that no one outside our family could possibly know. Dark secrets that have been buried for generations." As they spoke, the temperature in the room seemed to drop several degrees. The shadows in the corners appeared to elongate, reaching out like grasping fingers. Inspector Davis felt a prickling sensation at the back of his neck, as if unseen eyes were watching him. "Go on," he urged, trying to keep his voice level. Thomas continued, "We thought we could reason with her, make her understand that some secrets are better left buried. But when we met her here tonight, we realized the truth. She wasn't just blackmailing us; she was feeding off our family's

Book excerpt: William Hope Hodgson spent his early life as a cabin boy, before becoming a prolific author. Although best-known nowadays for two novels – The House on the Borderland (1908) and The Night Land (1912) – his short fiction was also extremely popular in its day. Many of the earliest ghost stories and tales of hauntings, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Edwards A man meets an ex-acquaintance on a train journey who has apparently swiped 75,000 Pounds Sterling. The man is accused of complicity at first and then he is written off with a simple mistaken identity. The events which I am about to relate took place between nine and ten years ago. Sebastopol had fallen in the early spring, the peace of Paris had been concluded since March, our commercial relations with the Russian empire were but recently renewed; and I, returning home after my first northward journey since the war, was well pleased with the prospect of spending the month of December under the hospitable and thoroughly English roof of my excellent friend, Jonathan Jelf, Esq., of Dumbleton Manor, Clayborough, East Anglia. Travelling in the interests of the wellknown firm in which it is my lot to be a junior partner, I had been called upon to visit not only the capitals of Russia and Poland, but had found it also necessary to pass some weeks among the trading ports of the Baltic; whence it came that the year was already far spent before I again set foot on English soil, and that, instead of shooting pheasants with him, as I had hoped, in October, I came to be my friend's guest during the more genial Christmas-tide.
