Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Myers family was overjoyed with their new home on Elm Street. It was a far cry from their cramped trailer on Dean's parents' farm. With its spacious rooms and quiet neighborhood, it felt like a dream come true. Little did they know, their dream was about to twist into a nightmare beyond their darkest imagination. The first few weeks were uneventful. There were a few strange occurrences, like a glass or two falling to the floor and a picture frame inexplicably tumbling from the wall. But these were minor inconveniences that could be easily explained away. The family laughed them off, too caught up in the excitement of their new life to pay much attention. Chrissy, the eldest, was the first to notice something truly unsettling. She claimed to hear faint whispers and footsteps in the attic, even though she knew there was no one up there. At first, she dismissed it as the house settling or her imagination running wild. But as the days passed, the whispers grew louder, more insistent. They seemed to call her name, beckoning her to the attic. She resisted, fear gnawing at her insides. Damon, the younger child, started complaining about cold spots in his room, as if someone or something was standing nearby. He would wake up in the middle of the night, shivering uncontrollably, his breath visible in the frigid air even though it was the middle of summer. Sometimes, he swore he could see a figure standing in the corner of his room, watching him with glowing red eyes. Jan and Dean tried to dismiss these as childish fears. After all, moving to a new home could be stressful for children. But as the days turned into weeks, the occurrences became more frequent and more disturbing. They could no longer ignore the growing sense of dread that permeated their new home. One evening, while Jan was cooking dinner, a heavy vase fell from the shelf without any apparent reason. It shattered on the floor, sending shards flying. Jan screamed as a piece of pottery sliced her arm, drawing blood. Dean rushed into the kitchen to investigate, but there was no one else in the house. As he tended to Jan's wound, they both froze in horror. The blood from Jan's cut was moving across the floor, forming words: "GET OUT."

Book excerpt: This edition of House of Spirits and Whispers features a new preface from the author, photographs, and bonus material We had been instructed to enter by the back door. That's the part of the house where the old man had lived. It was where he still lived. Turns out he was watching us that day, too, silent and heavy as the air, bound to the earth and his former home.We had been instructed to enter by the back door. In 1994, Annie Wilder and her children moved into a 100-year-old house in a historic Mississippi River town. Beautiful but spooky, the house had been on the market for six months with no offers. It felt like-and proved to be-a very haunted house. Essentially the story of a remarkable old Victorian house that seems to be a threshold to the spirit world and the astral realm, House of Spirits and Whispers has a backstory of the Wilder family's relationship with the ghost of the home's previous owner, an old man named Leon. Covering a decade's worth of ghostly activity and supernatural encounters, from whispering radiators to visits and appearances from all manner of spirits and entities, this unusual story is the true account of Annie Wilder's experiences living in a haunted house.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not to be confused with fantasy or the supernatural, the fantastic is in actuality its own beast and perhaps the most deeply frightening of all narrative modes. From Dracula and Nightmare on Elm Street, to Carrie and Them, the fantastic has become an ideal vehicle to denounce deep cultural dysfunctions that affect not only the way we understand reality, but also how we construct it. This work studies the various dimensions of the fantastic mode, examining the influences of iconic authors such as H.P. Lovecraft and Jean Ray, and addressing key narrations such as Guy de Maupasasant's The Horla and Jordan Peele's Get Out. It explains why the fantastic is not about ghosts or monsters, but about the incomprehensible sides of our own reality, and the terrifying unknown.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horror’s pleasures fundamentally hinge on looking backward, either on destabilising trauma, or as a period of comfort and happiness which is undermined by threat. However, this stretches beyond the scares on our screens to the consumption and criticism of the monsters of our past. The horror films of our youth can be locations of psychological and social trauma, or the happy place we go back to for comfort when our lives become unsettled. Horror That Haunts Us: Nostalgia, Revisionism, and Trauma in Contemporary American Horror is a collection of essays that brings together multiple theoretical and critical approaches to consider the way popular horror films from the last fifty years communicate, embody, and rework our view of the past. Whether we look at our current relationship to the scary movies of decades ago as personal or cultural memory, the way historical and sociopolitical events and frameworks – especially traumas – reframe the way we look at our pasts, or even the way recent horror films and video games look back at our past (and the past of the genre itself) through a filter of experience and history, this collection will show the close relationship between nostalgia and popular horror. These essays also demonstrate a range of unique and diverse points of view from both established and emerging scholars on the subject of horror and the past. Edited by seasoned horror experts Karrá Shimabukuro and Wickham Clayton, Horror That Haunts Us is a book with the aim of examining why we return again and again to certain popular horror films, either as remakes or reboots or as the basis for pastiche and homage.

And behind the rumors is a real ghost who will do whatever it takes to ensure the house reopens. She needs people to fill her house on Halloween. There’s a dark, horrible ritual to fulfill. Because while the witch may have been dead... she doesn’t intend to stay that way. FLAME TREE PRESS is the new fiction imprint of Flame Tree Publishing.
