Book excerpt: Varla Ventura, Coast to Coast favorite, Weird News blogger on Huffington Post, and author of The Book of the Bizarre and Beyond Bizarre, introduces Weiser Books’ new Collection of forgotten occult classics. Paranormal Parlor is an eerie assemblage of affordable digital editions, curated with Varla’s sixth sense for tales of the weird and unusual. In the 1859 Christmas edition of his regular publication, All Year Round, Charles Dickens solicited his favorite authors to take up residence in his Haunted House. With an introductory story by Dickens (The Mortals in the House) each author writes from the point of view of the ghost residing in a room. On the Twelfth Night of Christmas, a night believed to hold supernatural powers, the ghost begin to speak. Adelaide Anne Procter, who was Queen Victoria’s favorite poet, delivers the tale of “The Ghost in the Picture Room” entirely in rhyming verse. Wilkie Collins, a lifelong friend of Dickens and a well known author and playwright, delights with his nautical story of “The Ghost in the Cupboard Room.” And Elizabeth Gaskell, in the longest of the stories in the collection, paints a vivid portrait of the ghost of a judge in “The Ghost in the Garden Room.” For any lover of Dickens, Gaskell, or even just a good ghost story, this unique collection will warm the heart and chill the bones.

It is a "portmanteau" story, with Dickens writing the opening and closing framing stories, and contributions from five other well-known authors of the time.Contents:The Haunted HouseThe Mortals In The HouseThe Ghost in the Clock RoomThe Ghost in the Double RoomThe Ghost in the Picture RoomThe Ghost in the Cupboard RoomThe Ghost in Master B.'s RoomThe Ghost in the Garden RoomThe Ghost in the Corner RoomDickens's opening story, "The Mortals in the House", demonstrates his mastery of storytelling and characterisation. When the narrator sees a deserted house from his railway carriage he becomes determined to take up residence there. However, the house is said to be haunted and the servants gradually become agitated. The narrator sends them away and invites a group of his friends to stay with him and fend for themselves. On Christmas Eve the friends arrive with the aim of discovering evidence of the supernatural. Secluded in their rooms for the holiday, the friends agree to keep silent about any ghostly experiences until they gather on Twelfth Night. The ghosts the characters see have no connection with the house, and are not even really ghosts; the stories are of injustice, terror, or regret. The tales are all very different, but each has an element of the strange and scary. Some of the house guests have heard stories from ghosts while others have had out-of-body experiences. Wilkie Collins tells a seafaring story of Spanish pirates and the torment of a candle that, as it burns, takes the narrator ever closer to explosion and death. Dickens himself contributes "The Ghost in Master B's Room", a very peculiar tale of the ghost of innocence that hints at the author's own feelings of melancholy. Elizabeth Gaskell contributes a strong story of working people in the north of England. The closing story, "The Ghost in the Corner Room", is again by Dickens.Today, "The Haunted House of 1859" is one of the attractions at Dickens World in Chatham, Kent. This edition of "The Haunted House" contains additional material:* A Brief Biography Of Charles Dickens* A Few Quotes Of Charles Dickens* A Brief Biography Of Elizabeth Gaskell* A Few Quotes Of Elizabeth Gaskell* A Brief Biography Of Wilkie Collins* A Few Quotes Of Wilkie Collins

Book excerpt: Varla Ventura, fan favorite on Huffington Post’s Weird News, frequent guest on Coast to Coast, and bestselling author of The Book of the Bizarre and Beyond Bizarre, introduces a new Weiser Books Collection of forgotten crypto-classics. Magical Creatures is a hair-raising herd of affordable digital editions, curated with Varla’s affectionate and unerring eye for the fantastic. At Christmas time we so often associate Charles Dickens with his classic A Christmas Carol. In this unlikely Christmas tale, first published in 1894, in Christmas Stories you won’t find many mentions of Yuletide feasts or golden stores. Instead you will be treated to a story of a different ilk. In a very Clue-like scenario, the host invites several guests to take residence in the house for one night, the Twelfth Night of Christmas, each taking a room of their own--The Clock Room, The Cupboard Room, The Garden Room, and so on. Dickens also used this story as the setting for a collection of stories in which he commissioned various writers to take on a character and a room from the story he had written, and detail the character's encounter with the ghost of the room. Watch for each of these stories to come in the Paranormal Parlor collection!

Book excerpt: First published in 1859 for the weekly periodical “All the Year Round”, “The Haunted House" is a collection of short stories by Charles Dickens and others, with Dickens writing the opening and closing stories. They include: "The Mortals in the House" (Charles Dickens), "The Ghost in the Clock Room" (Hesba Stretton), "The Ghost in the Double Room" (George Augustus Sala), "The Ghost in the Picture Room" (Adelaide Anne Procter), "The Ghost in the Cupboard Room" (Wilkie Collins), "The Ghost in Master B's Room" (Charles Dickens), "The Ghost in the Garden Room" (Elizabeth Gaskell), and "The Ghost in the Corner Room" (Charles Dickens). Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812–1870) was an English writer and social critic famous for having created some of the world's most well-known fictional characters. His works became unprecedentedly popular during his life, and today he is commonly regarded as the greatest Victorian-era novelist. Although perhaps better known for such works as “Great Expectations” or “A Christmas Carol”, Dickens first gained success with the 1836 serial publication of “The Pickwick Papers”, which turned him almost overnight into an international literary celebrity thanks to his humour, satire, and astute observations concerning society and character. This classic work is being republished now in a new edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.
