Thus, the present work addresses the benefits and challenges of using Angie Thomas' novel "The Hate U Give" to foster intercultural communicative competence (ICC) in 9th grade EFL students. The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement received a considerable amount of support after the death of George Floyd in 2020. All over the world, people took to the streets to protest against racism and police brutality. Also in Germany, people of all ages took part. This movement shows that young people are interested in the issue and want to learn more about it. Accordingly, this can be seen as a reason to educate them, because in a world that seems to become more and more polarised, the ability to think critically is more important and indispensable than ever. To answer the research question, the second chapter will describe cultural learning. In addition, it takes a closer look at ICC according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), briefly outlines Byram's ICC model, which forms the basis for my lesson plan, as well as the principles for inter- and transcultural learning, and the concept of Global Citizenship Education. Moreover, by introducing a cross-curricular model called Confronting Prejudice Responses (CPR) model, which is a strategy to confront prejudice that has proven to be an effective means of reducing prejudice and therefore, it will be applied to the EFL classroom. After explaining these theories relevant to cultural learning, this paper will relate them to literature by presenting the benefits and challenges of literature for intercultural and transcultural learning and will further introduce types of tasks to promote intercultural competence through literature. After this, the third chapter clarifies the analysis of the potential for inter- and transcultural learning with the young adult novel "The Hate U Give" (2017) by Angie Thomas. Following this, by referring to the core curriculum for secondary level 1 in North Rhine-Westphalia, the learning objectives for using Angie Thomas’ novel in 9th grade will be outlined along with a description of my lesson plan. Finally, a discussion with a reflection in chapter four is explained, followed by a conclusion in chapter five, which gives a brief summary and critique of the findings.

It is without a doubt safe to assume that a stay abroad is a life-changing experience. Choosing to stay abroad is a great opportunity to practice one's language skills and develop intercultural competences. Whenever I thought of my stay abroad, I was intrigued by the idea of discovering new cultures and exploring new places. For someone who is attached to the familiar, the sheer thought of leaving one’s comfort zone might be the biggest obstacle in this journey. And still, each year, thousands of people flock to other parts of the world, perhaps to gain awareness of different people, cultures, and places. As professor O’Dowd states, “the (d)irect contact with members of the target culture can offer opportunities for developing the skills and attitudes of ICC, even though it’s not proven that such a contact will easily lead to intercultural learning.” Nevertheless, these people come with a particular set of attitudes and stereotypes regarding the different people and cultures of the countries. Therefore it is crucial to know how the perception can change through interaction with others. According to this, it can be said that offering broader access to cultures might enable people to mingle in these cultures. This requires a certain finesse and knowledge. Otherwise, a welcoming encounter of different people and cultures cannot be assured, but rather a clash of different cultures. Therefore, “language learning cannot be separated from culture learning as language manifests many of the social actions of a society and expresses the values and beliefs which underlie these actions”. Michael Byram’s model of Intercultural Communicative Competence, in short, ICC, can serve as an explanatory model to trace my development during my stay abroad. Mind you, although I spent more than three months in Liverpool, I cannot draw fixed conclusions about certain things. Therefore, my knowledge and attitudes might differ compared to a person who spent a year abroad.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we took a model of an online organised event via Zoom. The theme of the 2nd ICOPE 2020 was “Exploring the New Era of Education”, with various related topics including Science Education, Technology and Learning Innovation, Social and Humanities Education, Education Management, Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, Teacher Professional Development, Curriculum and Instructions, Assessment and Evaluation, and Environmental Education. This conference has invited academics, researchers, teachers, practitioners, and students worldwide to participate and exchange ideas, experiences, and research findings in the field of education to make a better, more efficient, and impactful teaching and learning. This conference was attended by 190 participants and 160 presenters. Four keynote papers were delivered at the conference; the first two papers were delivered by Prof Emeritus Stephen D. Krashen from the University of Southern California, the USA and Prof Dr Bujang Rahman, M.Si. from Universitas Lampung, Indonesia. The second two papers were presented by Prof Dr Habil Andrea Bencsik from the University of Pannonia, Hungary and Dr Hisham bin Dzakiria from Universiti Utara Malaysia, Malaysia. In addition, a total of 160 papers were also presented by registered presenters in the parallel sessions of the conference. The conference represents the efforts of many individuals. Coordination with the steering chairs was essential for the success of the conference. We sincerely appreciate their constant support and guidance. We would also like to express our gratitude to the organising committee members for putting much effort into ensuring the success of the day-to-day operation of the conference and the reviewers for their hard work in reviewing submissions. We also thank the four invited keynote speakers for sharing their insights. Finally, the conference would not be possible without the excellent papers contributed by authors. We thank all authors for their contributions and participation in the 2nd ICOPE 2020. The students will have acquired a deepened intercultural understanding before leaving school and encountering the real world, possibly visiting foreign countries after their abitur. The topic will be used to teach the cultural studies of America and expand their intercultural competences with this historical and political background knowledge. The teaching unit comprises eight lessons; two of them are discussed in more detail regarding the subject matter, didactic and methodological analysis. The used material and teacher's expectations for two of the lessons can be found in the appendix. In a globalized world characterized by international private and professional relationships, above all in Europe, acquiring communicative and intercultural competences, crucially in the lingua franca English, is ever more important. These competences are also anchored in the scholastic standard for the subject of English and implicate the necessity to teach students skills, which enable them to communicate in a sensitive and differentiated way. They will then be prepared to take on international jobs, to be prevented from falling foul of misunderstandings, to question their own behavior, to be tolerant and to treat others respectfully. One good method of teaching these competences in an English lesson is the use of films. The widespread assumption that films only function as entertainment has to be revised, because films offer an important insight into the culture of English speaking countries and contribute a lot to communicative competences such as writing and listening. In comparison to other media, films contain an interaction with visual and acoustic features which opens new ways for interpretation and creative methods. Furthermore, films offer the possibility to practice intercultural understanding, introduce dialects and native-speaker tempo. The earlier students are confronted with such a tempo, the better they will tolerate the reality that not every word needs to be understood. Also, the fact that nowadays students are surrounded by new media every day justifies the usage of films. Their film reception starts already in childhood through watching TV; hence they should be taught how to analyze what they see so that they do not become mere passive consumers, but critical ones.
