Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Jesus Christ a fallen human being, like us? Was His human nature corrupt and sinful, inherently and necessarily subject to suffering and death? Did He inherit a fallen humanity? If His humanity was fallen how was He sinless? Did He have human ignorance? In what way was His human will involved in the plan of salvation? What effect did the hypostatic union have on His humanity? In Jesus: Fallen?, Emmanuel Hatzidakis, a Greek Orthodox priest, addresses these and other controversial questions pertaining to the human nature of Christ, which are debated in many Christian denominations, and in his own Church. The theology advanced in the book is the traditional theology of the historic Church. In all the modern confusio of multiple Christs, here we have the perennial image of the incarnate God, the Theanthropos Christ. The book should appeal to every serious Christian and student of theology, history of dogma and Church History who is comfortable neither with liberalism nor fundamentalism, but who is searching for the authentically true teachings of Christianity. Hatzidakis draws richly from the patristic inheritance of East and West in an original, refreshing, and accessible way. He refutes opinions formed by many eminent postlapsarian theologians. This pivotal study is the first to address this topic from an Eastern Orthodox perspective and in this regard it constitutes an important contribution to Christology. A well-researched study it sheds light from an Eastern Orthodox perspective on this intriguing and crucial topic. It maintains that the subject of Christ’s humanity and its understanding is neither a theologoumenon nor an abstract intellectual cogitation, but a matter of profound soteriological and anthropological import.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harvard Theological Review, Vol. 8: July, 1915 What is the difference between these two classes of strange events which constitutes one a miracle while the other is not? It is the introduction Of the element of insight. The first is merely a wonder. He looks at it and passes on. The second is not simply a wonder, but a sign; a spirit has spoken and he has heard and understood. This distinction is of fundamental importance for the whole question Of miracle. It marks the dividing line between the scientific and the religious interest. The scientific man is interested in the cause Of the event, the religious man in its meaning. When the scientist has shown that you cannot account for what has happened by natural law (or that you can, as the case may be), his interest is at an end. But the interest of the religious man is only beginning. What has this strange event to tell men which is significant for their life? What message does it bring from the gods? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harvard Theological Review, 1920, Vol. 13: Issued Quarterly Crawford's mother, Amelia Ann Rogers, was the grand daughter Oi a Revolutionary Officer, named Stanhope. The Stanhope family are said to have settled in Virginia about the beginning of the eighteenth century. Crawford Howell Toy, the first of nine children, four sons and five daughters, was born at Norfolk on the 23d Of March, 1836, and died in Cambridge, Mass., on the 12th of May, 1919. He came, as we have seen, of excel lent stock, was inheritor of the best traditions in regard to learning, enjoyed rare opportunities for education, and was endowed with the ability and the will to make the most of these. Like his father, he was slight of figure, but not frail, as appears from his fondness for mountain climbing and from his power to endure long and arduous study. Crawford received his elementary training at the Nor folk Academy, which at the time was organized on the military basis. He was captain of one of the companies. On his graduation he received from the school a copy Of the works of Shakespeare for excellence. In 1852, at the age of sixteen, he entered the University Of Virginia.
