Book excerpt: Harrison dates to 1891, during the exciting days of the Northwest's expansion. The area's forests were full of old growth pine, fir, and cedar. Lakes and rivers provided transportation. Logging camps, sawmills, homesteads, and towns were springing up. Harrison was such a town, growing from a squatter homestead to a bustling city of 2,000 with stores, hotels, saloons, and churches in 12 short years. Mills lined the waterfront vying for space with the railroad and steamship docks. The boom did not last, but its legacy is a small, proud, picturesque city on the shore of beautiful Lake Coeur d'Alene.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carved out of the wilderness seemingly overnight, Harrison had its beginnings with the coming of the railroad and its controversial new location as the seat of Clare County. Businessmen, a few families, and armies of lumberjacks soon gave Harrison a reputation as the toughest town in Michigan. More than 10 years of the lawless lumber era gave way to the beginnings of a peaceful village in 1891. The streams and lakes previously used for water, ice, and log hauling became attractive to tourists drawn by the slogan, "20 Lakes in 20 Minutes." The miles of railroad and narrow-gauge rails turned into roads and trails for the buggies and automobiles used by settlers and vacationers. While agriculture largely failed in the tree-stumped wilderness of the early 1900s, the village prevailed into a city representative of small-town American life.

Book excerpt: Harrison, initially part of Essex County and later of Bergen County, is today in Hudson County. The original township, dating from 1840, was larger than the present mile-square area, which was established in 1867. With close to two hundred images, Harrison examines this community, which since its earliest days has been synonymous with industry. The simple country lane along which copper was transported to its Schuyler Avenue destination soon became Harrison Avenue-today, a main thoroughfare in the town known as "the Hive of Industry." This close-knit community of hardworking residents shares not only an industrial history-with well-known corporations, including RCA, Otis Elevator, and Worthington-but also a great athletic heritage. Among its best-known residents is Frank E. Rodgers, who served as mayor for more than four decades.

Book excerpt: Nestled in the heart of the Ozarks of north central Arkansas, Harrison is a small city that embodies an intriguing history within the state. The seat of Boone County, Harrison was incorporated on March 1, 1876, during Reconstruction. It is named after Marcus LaRue Harrison, a brigadier general in the Union cavalry who surveyed and platted the city. Harrison is noted for its active national historic district. For over 100 years, the historic town square has featured shops, cafes, a theater, a post office, a hotel, and government offices, as well as the county courthouse, which sits in the center of the square. Harrison has been able to maintain its history through community leadership and conservation efforts. Many of the citizens in the city and in the surrounding area have been here for generations and take great pride in their history, heritage, and community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The St. Croix–born, Harlem-based Hubert Harrison (1883–1927) was a brilliant writer, orator, educator, critic, and activist who combined class consciousness and anti-white-supremacist race consciousness into a potent political radicalism. Harrison’s ideas profoundly influenced “New Negro” militants, including A. Philip Randolph and Marcus Garvey, and his work is a key link in the two great strands of the Civil Rights/Black Liberation struggle: the labor- and civil-rights movement associated with Randolph and Martin Luther King Jr. and the race and nationalist movement associated with Garvey and Malcolm X. In this second volume of his acclaimed biography, Jeffrey B. Perry traces the final decade of Harrison’s life, from 1918 to 1927. Perry details Harrison’s literary and political activities, foregrounding his efforts against white supremacy and for racial consciousness and unity in struggles for equality and radical social change. The book explores Harrison’s role in the militant New Negro Movement and the International Colored Unity League, as well as his prolific work as a writer, educator, and editor of the New Negro and the Negro World. Perry examines Harrison’s interactions with major figures such as Garvey, Randolph, J. A. Rogers, Arthur Schomburg, and other prominent individuals and organizations as he agitated, educated, and organized for democracy and equality from a race-conscious, radical internationalist perspective. This magisterial biography demonstrates how Harrison’s life and work continue to offer profound insights on race, class, religion, immigration, war, democracy, and social change in America.
