Book excerpt: Robert Chamberlain compiled The Harmony of the Muses in 1654 as a tribute to the witty English verse of the early seventeenth century. The unique surviving copy (in the Huntington Library) includes poems of extraordinary quality and importance by many of the greatest poets of the English Renaissance: eight by John Donne (including the earliest publication of three of his finest elegies), seven by Thomas Carew, five by William Strode, and two by Ben Jonson, among many others. The poems indeed make good Chamberlain's promise of 'transcendent wit' as their authors bring 'Learning and Invention' to their treatment of 'the passionate Affections either of men or women.

Book excerpt: Professor of Music at Colgate University and a widely respected musicologist, Godwin traces the history of the idea, held since ancient times, that the whole cosmos, with its circling planets and stars, is in some way a musical or harmonious entity. The author shows how this concept has continued to inspire philosophers, astronomers, and mystics from antiquity to the present day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Precious repositories of ancient wisdom? Musty relics of outmoded culture? Timeless paragons of artistic achievement? Hegemonic tools of intellectual repression? Just what are the classics, anyway, and why do (or should) we still pay so much attention to them? What is the literary canon? What is myth, and how do we use it? These are some of the questions that gave rise to John Kirby's Secret of the Muses Retold. This new study of works by five twentieth-century Italian writers investigates the abiding influence of the Greek and Roman classics, and their rich legacy in our own day. The result is not only a splendid introduction to contemporary Italian literature, but also a lucid and stimulating meditation on the insights that writers such as Umberto Eco and Italo Calvino have tapped from the wellspring of ancient tradition. Kirby's book offers an impassioned plea for the recuperation of the humanities in general, and of classical studies in particular. No expertise in Greek, Latin, Italian, or literary theory is presumed, and both traditional and postmodern perspectives are accommodated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MacFadyen focuses on Brodsky's poetic beginnings. Revising the typical, simplistic representation of the young Brodsky and his peers in Western criticism, he demonstrates that Brodsky and his acquaintances absorbed an amazingly wide range of texts, both old and new, and that they read contemporary American, French, German, and Polish literature. Through numerous interviews with Brodsky's contemporaries and vast archival research, MacFadyen offers a vital new slant on Brodsky's early verse, providing the first published translations of these poems and examining Brodsky's work in relation to a broad international spectrum of influences to reveal the art and craft of his poetry. Joseph Brodsky and the Soviet Muse will appeal not only to those interested in Brodsky and the cultural influences that shaped his work and literature of the time but to those intrigued with Russian history and culture.

Book excerpt: Iconography: Yves Christe and Pascale Fesquet. Codicology: Paul Edward Dutton, Lesley Smith, Mark Zier, Rosamond McKitterick, and Michael Lapidge. Philosophy—Antiquity: Jean Pépin, John M. Rist, Henri Dominique Saffrey, OP. Philosophy—The Carolingian Age: John J. O'Meara, Guy-H. Allard, Gangolf Schrimpf. Philosophy—The Eleventh and Twelfth Centuries: Gilbert Dahan, Jean Jolivet, Charles Burnett, Robert D. Crouse, Wanda Cizewski, John Marenbon, Giles Constable, Willemien Otten, P.L. Reynolds, Peter Dronke, Paolo Lucentini, Tanja Kupke. Philosophy—The Later Middle Ages: Zenon Kaluza. Conceived as an hommage for Edouard Jeauneau —maître par excellence— the volume is introduced by a reconstruction of the Creation on the North portal of Chartres Cathedral, followed by a section on the transmission of significant texts, such as Plato's Timaeus, through the manuscript tradition. The chapter on later Greek philosophy contains studies on Plotinus and Augustine, Proclus, and Pseudo-Dionysius. A separate section interprets the thought of Johannes Scottus Eriugena, whose connections with earlier authors and influence on medieval neoplatonists constitutes a leitmotiv throughout the volume. The twelfth century is represented by articles on Gilbert of Poitiers on matter, Adelard of Bath, Honorius of Autun, Abelard's ethics and theology, monastic asceticism, Hildegard of Bingen's allegories, allegorical zoology, Alan of Lille's anthropology, the role of the Muses, and the Hermetic Asclepius. The particular usefulness of this study is its presentation of neoplatonic thought in its historical unfolding from Antiquity to the Later Middle Ages through a wide range of disciplines, focused on specific ideas and metaphors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultivating the Muse looks beyond the secure and benign images traditionally associated with inspiration in classical literature and scholarship. In contrast to the shapeless collectivity of the Muses in ancient accounts, this collection aspires to redeem their shape in other more vitalforms, closer or more distant incarnations of the ever-elusive maiden. Protagonists -- or victims -- in a complex game of cultural exploration, the alternative Muses and muse-like figures of this book are manipulated, abused, or effaced, but at the same time they also advocate or resist their fatesand explore their own powers of persuasion. Inspiration is here not so much explored in its traditional cultic dimensions, but rather invoked for its capacity to trigger fervent debates about power, desire, knowledge, identity, and gender in the societies of ancient Greece and Rome.

Book excerpt: Proclus' commentary on Plato's Cratylus is the only ancient commentary on this work to have survived, and is illuminating in two particular respects. First, it is actually the work of two Neoplatonists. The majority of the material is supplied by the Athenian-based Proclus (c. 411-485 AD), who is well known for his magisterial commentaries on Plato's Timaeus and Parmenides, as well as for a host of other works involving the study of Plato. This material we have consists of excerpts from Proclus' commentary edited by another figure who appears to be a Platonist working somewhat later in Alexandria. Consequently it contains insights into the philosophy of both of the principal late antique centres of Platonism: Athens and Alexandria. Secondly, the material is divided between the grittier issues of language-theory, on which it engages freely with other ancient philosophies, and theological discussion, mostly involved with the etymologies of the names of Greek gods, in which Proclus is more concerned to relate his own brand of Platonism to the 'Orphic' and 'Chaldaean' theological systems, and also to Homer. This English translation, accompanied by Brian Duvick's extensive notes, explicates all these facets of the ancient text.
