This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Handwriting of the Kings Queens of England The method I intend to adopt in presenting the reader with specimens of the handwriting of successive English sovereigns, and in some instances of their children, from the time of Edward III to the present day, is to preface each example of writing with a few words, giving, if undated, its approximate date, explaining the circumstances under which it was written, and pointing out any special feature of interest it may contain. In order to make this volume 'useful' as well as 'curious, ' I have given examples of all the forms I have met with of the signatures of English sovereigns. Prior to Henry VIII, the same king often altered considerably the form of his signature; and by giving examples of those various forms I hope the volume may be a guide to those who endeavour either to gauge the authenticity of a document professing to bear a particular royal auto graph, or to fix the actual reign to which belongs an instrument that might, from the signature upon it, equally well be of the reigns of Henry IV. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who was the first king of England? Did Henry I assassinate his brother? How did 'Bloody Mary' reinstate Roman Catholicism? For more than 1,000 years the British monarchy has dramatically shaped national and international history. Kings and queens have conquered territory, imposed religious change and extracted taxation, each with their own motivations and ambitions. In this beautifully illustrated book, Cath Senker delves into the extraordinary history of the British monarchy and its host of kings, queens and pretenders. There have been benevolent rulers, violent ones, religious fanatics, brilliant economists, masters of diplomacy and the power hungry. But whether they have abused their power or used it for good, each monarch has played a part in the rich tapestry of British history, coping with both international and civil wars, rebellions and criticism. The Kings & Queens of Britain introduces this fascinating thousand-year history, providing rich biographical detail of Britain's remarkable monarchs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A frank and fascinating history of forty of Europe’s most loony, deluded, and downright dangerous monarchs. In Mad Kings & Queens co-authors Alison Rattle and Allison Vale reveal a legion of kings and queens who have abused the pedestal of power in spectacular style. The respectability of the royal position is well and truly tossed aside by the whimsy and wanton depravity of these mad European monarchs, including: The queen who murdered her husband with a red-hot spit. The bloodthirsty monarch who impaled tens of thousands of his subjects. The vampiric ruler who bathed in the blood of young women. The king of excess who beheaded his wives. Mad Kings and Queens explores seven hundred years of royal eccentricity, detailing a catalogue of madness and exploring the finer intricacies of royal breeding that lay at its root.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of the Kings of England, Vol. 1: Now First Collected From the Originals Now Royal Archives, and From Other Authentic Sources, Private as Well as Public; Edited With an Historical Introduction and Notes An intimate acquaintance with the subject is by no means widely diffused; and, as it cannot be considered foreign to the purpose of a work of this nature to enter briefly into the probable causes of this deficiency, which appears somewhat paradoxical in an age when the progress of educational knowledge of every kind is boasted of as a proof of our gigantic advance in civilization, we may perhaps be permitted to preface a Collection Of Letters, of the Kings of England by a few general observations with reference to this point; not considering it in any way necessary to enlarge on the vast importance of the study. Which these volumes are intended to illustrate, nor to expatiate on the manner in which that object has been attempted to be accomplished.
