Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Handbook of Iron Shipbuilding The author being aware of the generally expressed want in all books published on the subject of Iron Shipbuilding - in many of which the theory of the lines, displacement, &c., are treated as if for the especial benefit of a Senior Wrangler at Cambridge, and utterly useless to the Shipbuilder and others, as the practical part is either very slightly touched upon, or entirely ignored - wishes to supply this void, without entering into theoretical investigations, which when written are seldom or never read. He has, during a long and varied experience, extending over twenty years in different parts of the United Kingdom, been at great pains to include in bis notes such information as is really useful, carefully eliminating what has been, during the rapid advance of the science of Shipbuilding, shown to be superfluous or obsolete. He has constantly kept in view two objects: - Firstly. To make this a useful handbook for the Shipowner, not only regarding the construction of a vessel, but also as to the cost of work in all the great centres of the shipbuilding trade in the United Kingdom. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1868 edition. Excerpt: ... t SPECIFICATIONS. Having endeavoured to illustrate the plain and ordinary modes of Iron Ship-building, I reserve for the conclusion a few Specifications of various Steam and Sailing vessels. One of these is strictly in accordance with the last published regulations of Lloyd's, and by following the rules there laid down, it is not difficult to discover the correct scantling required for different sized vessels which are to be classed at Lloyd's. The remainder are chosen rather to show instances of vessels which, though differing from Lloyd's rules in many essential points, have nevertheless stood well, and may therefore be useful guides to those who have occasion to construct vessels for peculiar purposes, and wish for examples to guide them. I could wish to have enlarged this section of my work, but, without the permission of either the owners or the builders, I did not feel myself at liberty to insert some examples that would have been valuable for the objects above-named: other cases, which it was in my power to give, did not afford sufficient interest or variety. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iron Ship-Building: With Practical Illustrations The Object of the communication was to institute an inquiry into the advantages to be derived from employ ing iron as a material for building ships, and to com pare such vessels with those built Of timber. The paper was subsequently published in the form of a pamphlet, with plates, and was favourably noticed in all the publications of the day. The time seems to be favourable for resuming the subject, and for laying before the public such further information as the last fifteen years have so amply provided. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shipbuilding in Iron and Steel: A Practical Treatise, Giving Full Details of Construction, Processes of Manufacture, and Building Arrangements MY principal object in writing this book has been to furnish to shipbuilders, and to shipbuilding officers of all grades, fuller information respecting the details of ship construction in iron and steel than any previous work records. In the body of the book I have borne repeated testimony to the merits of the existing writings of Mr. Grantham, Mr. Scott Russell, Dr. Fairbairn, Professor Rankine, and others; but none of these either gives, or professes to give, that copious detailed information of which those who have to superintend the practical operations of shipbuilding, and even cultivated workmen, have often felt the want.
