Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hand-Book of Standard or American Phonography A Standard system of shorthand for the English language must combine the following characteristics: I. It must be capable of representing with accuracy the sounds of the English language, and of the principal languages quoted by English writers and speakers. II. It must secure considerable speed of writing, with ample legibility, so as to answer all the purposes for which longhand is employed. III. It must secure, for reporting purposes, ample speed of writing, without illegibility. IV. Order and simplicity must be observed in every department. Laying aside all exaggeration, and coming down to positive demonstration, the system of shorthand presented in this work can be shown to comply entirely with every one of these requirements, while it may be as demonstratively shown that every other system falls considerably short of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manual of Phonography This work is a presentation of the system of phonetic shorthand, the elementary parts of which were originally invented by Isaac Pitman, of Bath, England, in 1837; which was modified, improved, and named "Phonography" by him, in 1840; and which, developed and perfected through the suggestions, experiments, and tests of a multitude of practical writers in England and America, reached, substantially, its present form in the later fifties. The first edition of this Manual, written by Benn Pitman (brother of the inventor of phonography) in 1855, appeared in no fewer than live distinct issues before 1860, when the work was first revised. Numerous issues followed up to 1885, in which year it was again revised in collaboration by Benn Pitman and Jerome B. Howard, by whom the present revised and improved edition is also prepared. But slight additions have been made to the materiel of the system in the course of these several revisions; neither has the plan of presentation been essentially changed, it being felt that any marked alteration of method would be accompanied by a diminution of that clearness and simplicity for which the book has been so long conspicuous among shorthand text-books, and which have made it so eminently successful for both self and class instruction. The chief advances in the present revision consist in a somewhat modified and improved order of presenting the several appendages, in the earlier introduction of logograms, with suitable exercises, and in the addition of a new and copious set of dictation exercises. It is natural, considering the astonishing spread of phonography of late years, that many variations upon the recognized system should be published and to a limited extent adopted. The authors of this work have felt, however, after careful examination and test of many hundreds of supposed improvements, that they were, for the most part, the expression of mere individual taste or caprice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Manual of Phonography: Being a Complete Guide to the Acquisition of Pitman's Phonetic Shorthand In preparing this Manual of Phonetic Shorthand, the author has had one leading object in view, namely: to furnish a means for acquiring speedily a correct and practical knowledge of the much coveted art. The books that have heretofore been used have all answered a good purpose; but they have, with one exception probably, been rendered comparatively obsolete by the introduction into the system of two or three important improvements. These are incorporated into the present work, by which it is rendered a reliable and permanent text-book. In one important particular this treatise differs from all others heretofore published; namely, the exercises to be written by the pupil are printed in phonetic spelling. By this arrangement three important advantages are gained: First: the learner will be made acquainted with the philosophy and utility of phonetic spelling as applied to printing, and will generally be so well pleased with it as to become its ardent advocate. Second; in writing his exercises the pupil will be enabled to transcribe the words into Phonography more readily, for learners are very apt to be troubled by trying to get as many letters into their phonographic words as the old spelling contains, and thus make blunders; and, from inexperience in the analysis of words, there is great liability of inaccurate vocalization; but by writing from the words printed phonetically both of these difficulties will be avoided. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Phonographic Manual The illustrations introduced in the text of this work, are from Phonographic types, prepared expressly for it, and are the first of the kind produced in this country. They were cast by the Messrs. Wells, of this city, to whom the Phonetic cause is much indebted. These gentlemen have rendered valuable aid in the preparation of types for Phonotypic printing, since its introduction into this country, notwithstanding it has been attended with those sacrifices of time and means which usually accompany the introduction, and early practice, of any new art. The method adopted in the presentation of the system, of placing the engraved exercises Opposite to the typic page which contains their explanations, and devoting each Opening of the book to the details of some specific principle, are advantages which, we think, will be appreciated by both teacher and student. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Phonography This book contains a complete exposition of that method of phonography which is called "American" on account of its widespread use in the country of its adoption. One of the objects which the author has kept in mind has been the incorporation into this work of the best and newest features which American phonographers of the Pitmanic school have produced. The great utility and adaptability of Pitmanic shorthand cannot be questioned. It has been the purpose of the author to make this volume a unit which should contain all the material that is essential for the development of the finished phonographer. To accomplish this, the following features have been introduced: (1) a phonetic introduction, as the means by which the student may be led from illogical and inconsistent spelling to logical and consistent sound writing; (2) a complete presentation of both the amanuensis and reporting styles of phonography, in which technical terms are carefully avoided; (3) a section containing the differing features of the other standard Pitmanic systems as "optional expedients," which affords an opportunity for teachers to use those principles for which they may have a preference; (4) a section of eighty pages of graded supplementary material, consisting of word exercises, sentences, letters, and general dictation matter taken from standard works. Although this book contains several new features, the author would emphasize the attempt that has been made throughout the book to have hand training, so necessary to success in shorthand, keep pace with mind training. The value of exercising a great degree of care is repeatedly brought to the attention of the student. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Haney's Phonographic Hand-Book: Being an Introduction to Munson's Complete Phonographer, and Fully Presenting the Elements of Phonography, With All the Latest Improvements This little volume is not intended as A presentation of the entire art of Phonography, from the begin ning-to the extraordinary and beautiful ramifications of its highest development but it is just what its title indicates - an introductory or elemental work. And although it is complete so far as it goes, and does really give all the elements of Phonograph y, we do not offer it as a complete guide for the reporter; but simply to give those whowould like to know something of the nature of the art, a chance to do so without paying the price that must necessarily be charged for a thorough and exhaustive work.
