Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hair is a major component of the body's tissue system that contributes to the individual's make up and confers a large degree of personal identity. Apart from its visible façade, hair also has a functional role. It has an unique structure and complex molecular development. The very nature of hair makes it a suitable marker for the prognosis of disease. Hair can also be used to screen for toxins and changes in the diet. However, there are currently no suitable publications available that describe hair in a rational scientific context. This handbook provides an academic approach to hair in health and disease. Divided into five sections the Handbook of Hair in Health and Disease provides an insight into hair growth and loss, molecular and cellular biology of hair, dietary toxicity and pathological history, diseases and treatments of hair, as well as shampoos and conditioners. Unique features of each chapter in this volume include relevant and useful 'Key facts' which highlight interesting or important findings of the specific subjects and 'Summary points' that will give a clear overview of the subjects treated in each chapter. The Handbook of Hair in Health and Disease will be essential to a variety of users, such as trichologists, doctors and nurses and all those interested or working within the area of hair health. This includes nutritionists and dieticians, scientific beauticians, health workers and practitioners, college and university lecturers and undergraduate and graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although hair is not essential for health and survival in humans as it is in other mammals, changes in hair growth density, pattern or alterations in its color and texture can often lead to distress. In addition, these types of changes can indicate underlying systemic disease, including endocrine, genetic, metabolic, or nutritional and psychiatric disorders. An Atlas of Hair and Scalp Diseases explores the enormous range of changes in hair and its growth. The atlas contains over 200 carefully selected color illustrations accompanied by concise clinical information on diagnosis, practical management, and recent advances in our knowledge and understanding of each disorder. In nine chapters, it provides a comprehensive view of the basic physiology of hair growth, congenital and hair shaft abnormalities, including cosmetic damage to hair, loss and overgrowth of hair, and abnormalities of the scalp, including inflammatory, infective and malignant skin disease. While not life-threatening, hair and scalp disease are widespread and cause much distress. Physicians regularly see patients suffering from these problems. A one-of-a-kind book, An Atlas of Hair and Scalp Diseases provides access to a comprehensive collection of physical signs and concise guidance to their significance that will aid in quick and correct diagnoses and improved management and care for patients.

From basics to advanced knowledge, everything in one book. In this sense it is rather an “illustrated textbook” than solely an atlas. It includes evidence based information, acknowledged algorithms, which help easy diagnosis and “take home messages”, which aid memorizing specific features of diverse diseases. The atlas consists of two major parts. In the first part the authors describe structures and patterns seen in trichoscopy. The second part consists of detailed description of characteristic trichoscopy features of diverse diseases of hair and scalp. Consecutive chapters illustrate genetic hair disorders, acquired hair loss and scalp diseases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary intent of this book is to familiarize the medical practitioner with the "nail unit" in a way which will render, correctly and more easily, the diagnosis of nail diseases. At the same time, it serves to encourage the treatment and corrective measures of the ab normalities, if possible, based on anatomical and physiological knowledge. The chapters on anatomy, regeneration, and nail formation are basic to the author's in tent. The content ofthe references quoted represents information which is proven and not controversial material. In addition, my own material not previously published is included. I would like to introduce the anatomical concept that the nail unit consists of four dif ferent epithelial structures, each with its own characteristics, yet all interrelated. These four constituents are the Proximal Nail Fold (PNF), the Matrix (M), the Nail Bed (NB) and the Hyponychium (HYP). A disease may occur in any number of or all nail unit structures. A clear understanding of the anatomy, histology, and tissue kinetics of each constituent will be necessary and is the key factor in interpreting the abnormal findings of each of these constituents as disease occurs. It follows, therefore, that treatment and Cor rective measures should include the knowledge of not only the nail but also of its relation ship to the bony phalanx and the digit.

Book excerpt: Hair health is a core benefit of products produced for consumers by the cosmetic industry, and more than 70% of women claim to want healthy hair. However, there is very little clarity in the industry as to the meaning of healthy hair in a consumer context and the technical factors that control what the consumer perceives as hair health. Providing updated information on how to prevent and restore hair damage, Healthy Hair characterizes the clinical, physical, and chemical properties of healthy hair. Factors that control a woman’s perception of healthy hair are described, and how these factors link to the fundamental biology of the hair fiber are explained, as well as insults to hair, such as brushing, coloring, and UV exposure. The influences of different products on hair health are discussed, and methods used to measure healthy hair at the molecular, single-fiber, and consumer levels are described. Hundreds of high quality color pictures illustrate the most important clinical, dermoscopic, and microscopic characteristics of both healthy and unhealthy hair.
