Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1883, The Gunsmith’s Manual is generally considered to be the first substantive work dealing with gunsmithing exclusively and in detail. A comprehensive introductory chapter, one of the manual’s best qualities, provides the reader with an extensive history of the gun, including the invention of gun powder, the first rifle, and much more. Once acquainted with firearms, readers can then move on to learn how guns were made and used in the nineteenth century, as well as terms used in gunsmithing. The real meat of the book, however, is the authors’ detailed instruction on gun care and maintenance. Specifics are offered on tools, workbench materials and setup, metalworking, working with wooden stocks, common repairs, and the process of browning, among many other topics. You can even improve your marksmanship with these expert shooting tips for a variety of firearms. Although first published in the nineteenth century, The Gunsmith’s Manual is highly relevant for today’s firearms owners and tinkerers. The authors’ recommended procedure for removing a rusted-in screw, for example, is still widely used over 100 years later. You can learn to care for your rifle or shotgun as traditional gunsmiths would have. For both the historian and the firearms enthusiast, The Gunsmith’s Manual is an invaluable learning tool.

Book excerpt: 2012 Reprint of 1950 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Illustrated with over 100 photos and drawings. Roy F. Dunlap's book is self-described as "a manual of firearms design, construction, alteration and remodeling for amateur and professional gunsmiths and users of modern firearms." What makes Dunlap's book important is its specificity. For example, instead of merely bringing up the need for a bench grinder, he cites why a 1/4- o r 1/3-horsepower, double-shaft model, turning at 1,750 rpm with a wire-brush wheel on one side and a medium-coarse wheel on the other is the best choice. He supports his recommendation by explaining why you'll find wider use for a medium coarse than a finer stone. His chapter entitled "Helpful Gunsmith Knowledge," is absolutely crammed with bits of information, and includes tips that he evidently could find no other place for in his book. In the midst of a general discussion on disassembly, for instance, Dunlap digresses to describe in detail a L-shaped tool he made to simplify reassembly of an L.C. Smith double and how to use it. All in all, Dunlap covers soldering and brazing; welding; heat treatment of metals; making and fitting sights and accessories; making, fitting and heat treatment of parts; cartridge information useful to gunsmiths; rifle barrels; chamber and barrel work; rifle-action work; pistol and revolver work; shotgun work; twenty two rim fire arms; browning, blueing and blacking of metal; fitting commercial metallic sights; mounting telescopic sights; wood for gun stocks; design of gun stocks; stock making; checkering; stock repair and alteration; stock finishing; styling the custom rifle; custom metal work; ornamentation of wood and metal; target rifles; the Garand rifle; testing facilities and apparatus; synthetic bedding; cartridge and chamber drawings; and data sheets. A classic work, profusely illustrated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beginner’s guide to the ins and outs of guncraftsmanship from a professional gunsmith. When it was first published in 1938, Elementary Gunsmithing was one of the few books of the time to address an amateur audience, among more advanced titles. With clear, engaging, and instructional prose, Frazer takes beginner firearm interest to the next level by talking the reader through the fundamentals of gunsmithing, such as what tools are necessary for the craft, how to solder and mount parts, and even how to conduct a fledgling gunsmithing business. He specifically addresses the “young man who likes working at the bench,” and similarly the book reflects the spirit of innovation, resourcefulness, and do-it-yourself work. While the book may not cover contemporary firearms, it offers a grandfatherly, old-school instructional vibe with accurate information about guns up to the 1940s. Frazer focuses on gunsmithing with ordinary hand tools at the work bench, rather than complicated machinery. These helpful tips and information, which are still applicable today, make Elementary Gunsmithing a useful, classic, and historically significant reference for both amateurs and budding gunsmithers keen on building a full-time business. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Normally I would say Knowledge is the basis of success. For this book I would say: Knowledge is the basis of profit!A friend once told me I had the curse of knowledge. When I asked what exactly that meant? The explanation made a lot of sense to me. When you have been doing something for a lifetime you start to take knowledge for granted and assume everyone interested in the subject must know it too. This is why defining nomenclature and terminology become so important. In "Gunsmith Tools, Cutters & Gauges, a Primer" I worked with all the firearms industry companies that make cutters, chamber reamers, taps and gauges for their input. We have a common goal that our customers and students know accurate and correct details concerning the design and function of tools. Everyone who manufactures, sells or rents tools to the gun trade has a clear interest in answering all the questions that commonly come our way concerning the tools of our trade. Our discussions made it clear that what is needed is an old fashioned "Primer" on the subject of these tools. Merriam-Webster defines a primer as: A small introductory book on a subject or a short informative piece of writing. That is exactly what this book is designed to be. We are not teaching gunsmithing per se, rather how the tools are designed and made to make a gunsmith's job easier and more profitable. With the information provided by numerous authorities in the gun industry for this primer you are relying on the combined knowledge and experience of many qualified experts, equal to several hundred years of combined experience. What better way to jump start your knowledge base?! No one person knows everything. Whether you are new to the industry or someone who has been gunsmithing for years, there is something for you here that will make you more efficient and profitable.
