Book excerpt: A new exploration of the secular manuscripts and medieval medical texts associated with the York Guild and its members. Produced in 1486 and subsequently augmented, the Guild Book of the Barbers and Surgeons of York (British Library Egerton MS 2572) is a unique record of the knowledge, ambitions, activities and civic relationships maintained by the Barbers and Surgeons Guild over a period of 300 years. The manuscript's earliest folios contain images, astrological tracts, a plague treatise and a bloodletting poem. To these were added early modern ordinances and oaths, a series of royal portraits, and the names of the Guild's masters and apprentices. It is a rare survival of late medieval medical knowledge placed within a civic context. This new multi-disciplinary examination of the York Guild Book presents a comprehensive edition of its content and a detailed study of the creation and use of this fascinating manuscript. The York Guild Book was not owned by any one person but was intended to be representative of the types of manuscripts the Guild's members might have individually possessed. The Guild's commission elevated their manuscript's functional content into something which could be proudly owned and displayed, as is demonstrated by the stylishly executed pen and ink drawings, two of which are possibly unique. Through a contextualisation of the form and content of the manuscript, the book articulates ideas about material culture and the ceremonial role of secular manuscripts whilst shedding new light on the dissemination and status of medieval medical texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Return to the golden age of adventure with this gorgeously wrought, action-packed, globetrotting tale that combines the bravura storytelling of Kipling with the irresistible, illustrative style of Hergé’s Adventures of Tintin. Behind the staid public rooms of an old world gentlemen’s club operates a more mysterious organization: The Explorers Guild, a clandestine group of adventurers who bravely journey to those places in which light gives way to shadow and reason is usurped by myth. The secrets they seek are hidden in mountain ranges and lost in deserts, buried in the ocean floor and lodged deep in polar ice. The aim of The Explorers Guild: to discover the mysteries that lie beyond the boundaries of the known world. This beautifully produced combination graphic novel and adventure tale, set against the backdrop of World War I, concerns the Guild’s quest to find the golden city of Buddhist myth. The search will take them from the Polar North to the Mongolian deserts, through the underground canals of Asia to deep inside the Himalayas, before the fabled city finally divulges its secrets and the globe-spanning journey plays out to its startling conclusion. “With its colorful cast, exotic locales, and intertwined fates, the book slowly addicts. A rousing throwback whose spinning plates never stop, even at the end,” (Kirkus Reviews), The Explorers Guild is perfect for fans of the adventures of J.J. Abrams and C.S. Lewis.

Many of those players belong to guilds, organized groups whose members play together in order to defeat difficult bosses, compete with rivals, or undertake special challenges. Leading a guild is not a trivial matter, but many players dive into this challenging role completely unprepared. Scott F. Andrews has been helping guild leaders and officers since 2007 through his weekly column for WoW.com, Officers' Quarters. In The Guild Leader's Handbook, Andrews offers a complete guide to conceptualizing, establishing, and maintaining a successful guild. The book will help readers decide what sort of structure and focus their guild should have and covers fundamentals like recruiting, managing officers, creating and enforcing reasonable policies, and handling the interpersonal drama that threatens guild harmony. Andrews gives sage advice on how leaders can prepare their guilds for successful PvE (Player vs. Environment) dungeon crawls and raids and explains guidelines for fairly distributing the spoils of battle. He also covers how to assemble a competitive force in PvP (Player vs. Player) and how to lead a community of roleplaying specialists. The Guild Leader's Handbook is a comprehensive guide to guild creation and success, written by a recognized expert on the subject.

This book was released on 2013-02-28 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The guild buildings of Shakespeare’s Stratford represent a rare instance of a largely unchanged set of buildings which draw together the threads of the town’s civic life. With its multi-disciplinary perspectives on this remarkable group of buildings, this volume provides a comprehensive account of the religious, educational, legal, social and theatrical history of Stratford, focusing on the sixteenth century and Tudor Reformation. The essays interweave with one another to provide a map of the complex relationships between the buildings and their history. Opening with an investigation of the Guildhall, which served as the headquarters of the Guild of the Holy Cross until the Tudor Reformation, the book explores the building’s function as a centre of local government and community law and as a place of entertainment and education. It is beyond serious doubt that Shakespeare was a school boy here, and the many visits to the Guildhall by professional touring players during the latter half of the sixteenth-century may have prompted his acting and playwriting career. The Guildhall continues to this day to house a school for the education of secondary-level boys. The book considers educational provision during the mid sixteenth century as well as examining the interaction between touring players and the everyday politics and social life of Stratford. At the heart of the volume is archaeological and documentary research which uses up-to-date analysis and new dendrochronological investigations to interpret the buildings and their medieval wall paintings as well as proposing a possible location of the school before it transferred to the Guildhall. Together with extensive archival research into the town’s Court of Record which throws light on the commercial and social activities of the period, this rich body of research brings us closer to life as it was lived in Shakespeare’s Stratford.
