Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Groundwork of Modern Geography an Introduction to the Science of Geography The writer of a book on Geography can scarcely hope to be really original but every writer or teacher may emphasise those parts of the science which appeal most strongly to him, or which seem to him to be most important. In this book the author has exercised this privilege freely, and has followed what appears to him to be a natural sequence. It is perfectly obvious, however, that other writers may prefer a different order, and may choose to emphasise other aspects of this wide science. Limits of space have necessitated the sacrifice of Mathematical Geography and Cartography, and the important branch Oceanography is only incidentally mentioned. The author has had in View a book which may provide, within moderate compass, an introduction to the so-called New Geography. It is hoped that not only the student but also the intelligent general reader may find the book of some interest, and that it may serve as a preparation for, and a stimulus to, the reading of one or more of the excellent monographs or Regional Geographies now available in English. The admirable series The Regions of the World, edited by Mr. Mackinder, and the stimulating Europe, by Prof. Lyde, may be mentioned as examples of books to which the present groundwork may possibly serve as an introduction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Home and Its Surroundings: A First Book of Modern Geography Necessity for other basal norrons.-home ex perience alone, however, cannot afford a complete basis for the later study of geography, because no one locality presents all the features required. From this it happens that the best books have contained some definitions and illustrations, as of mountain, river, valley, harbor, and factory, and have planned to build the later text with the ideas these gave as a foundation. Such conceptions are certainly necessary in the early part of geography; but mere definitions fail to produce vivid, accurate pictures. The average pupil who has pursued geography for a year has little notion of the great importance of soil, of what a mountain or a river really is, of the value of good trade routes, and why a vessel cannot find a harbor wherever it will cast anchor along the coast. Yet such ideas are the proper basis for the study of geography in the higher grades. The fact that they are so often wanting is proof that our geography still lacks foundation. How these needs are met. - In this first volume the attempt is made to supply this foundation by treating first such common things as soil, hills, valleys, products, animal life, people, industries, climate, and government, which are part of every child's environment; and sec ondly, other features, as mountains, rivers, lakes, and the ocean, which, though absent from many localities, are still necessary as a preparation for later study. Definitions, however, are not relied upon for giving the child this extra knowledge, but detailed descriptions and discus sions instead. This by no means involves neglect of the child's-own environment from the time the unfamiliar matter is introduced, for references to home experiences in this regard are frequently used. We believe that our plan gives a fuller guarantee of fitness for advanced study than has heretofore been furnished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Geography Humboldt was, above all, a great traveller, but he was also a man of science in the largest sense, interested not in one group of facts, but in many. The extent of his knowledge and the breadth of his interests enabled him to observe a vast number of phenomena while his particular genius was manifest in the way in which he correlated these, and considered them in their relation to each other. Though it is true that his influence was most direct in the case of natural history, yet in this respect also he pointed to the future, for the geographers of to-day are in debted to the naturalists for some of their finest generalisations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical System of Modern Geography: Or a View of the Present State of the World This I am confident will be found not only the natural, but the philosophical method of teaching Geography; for on all subjects the learner must make himself master of simple things, before he can understand those which are complex. In the present instance, the pupil begins with confidence and alacrity, because he not only knows something about his own town, but the subject itself is highly interesting to him. From these simple descriptions, the pupil is gradually led on, by a series of the plainest and most important questions, to a knowledge of the grand divisions of the globe. When he has become familiar with these divisions, and can without hesitation point them out on the map, he is qualified to commence the Second part. In this part, after a few general observations on the divisions, he is required to learn on the map, the boundaries, names of rivers, towns, &c., and then he commences with a description of the several countries which it contains. In every department of description, great care has been taken to select what is most important for the pupil to know, and to commit to memory, and to reject whatever is of little use; for experience has taught me that long descriptions, however judiciously arranged, do not fail to tire and discourage the young pupil. Some of the more prominent features of the country are therefore all that should be required of the beginner. This work will be found to possess some peculiarities. The use of initial letters, in particular, I consider of much consequence in enabling the pupil to determine the correct answers; so that it is believed in going through the entire work, he will seldom require any assistance from his teacher. The Third part treats of Latitude and Longitude; and perhaps no part of the work is of more importance than this, and particularly as most books of this kind are deficient in this respect. The Fourth part contains an introduction to Astronomy and Physical Geography, together with problems on the Globes, and a Table of Latitude and Longitude of all the principal places on the earth. The numerous tables which the work contains, it is hoped will be found useful and correct. Some of them have been copied with little variation from Morse and Malte Brun, and others have been arranged with much care and considerable labor, expressly for the work. In giving this little volume to the public, I cannot but entertain the hope that I shall contribute in some degree to our improved method of teaching a science so necessary and popular as that of Geography. But how far I shall have the satisfaction of seeing this hope realized, the public must determine. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
