Book excerpt: Apart from being a scholar and theologian, Rowan Williams has also demonstrated a rare gift for speaking and writing plainly and clearly about essentials of the Christian faith. In the chapters of this book he writes with profound perception about the life of holiness to which we are called. The range of Williams' frame of reference is astonishing – he brings poets and theologians to his aid, he writes about the Rule of St Benedict, the Bible, Icons, contemplation, St Teresa of Avila and even R. D. Laing. He concludes with two chapters on the injunction 'Know Thyself' in a Christian context. Throughout, Williams points out that holiness is a state of being – it is he writes 'completely undemonstrative and lacking any system of expertise. It can never be dissected and analysed.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reformation put the grace of God in the right place in the salvation of man. Luther's proclamation of "justification by faith" brought the concept of grace to the fore and made it the centrality of Christian theology. But the overemphasis on the doctrine of justification in the Reformation created the imbalance between justification and sanctification in the soteriology of the Protestant church. To some people just the profession of faith without an accompanying godly life was not good enough for salvation. It seemed that "salvation by grace of God" in the doctrine of justification made man's salvation too easy, thereby opening the floodgate for nominal Christians who were no different from pagans in their hearts. Christian leaders and theologians in the modern church age have tried to "rectify" this problem by injecting the necessity of works into the Christian life. The spiritual movements such as pietism and perfectionism, and new theologies such as the New Perspective on Paul and the Federal Vision, are such endeavors that have stressed good works in the salvation of man. However, without the concept of definitive sanctification, they all lost the monergistic nature of salvation and deviated to the humanistic theology of Arminianism or Pelagianism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ."If Mr. Law finds a spark of piety in a reader's mind, he will soon kindle it into a flame." --Edward Gibbon Originally published in 1728 at the beginning of the Enlightenment, when rational criticism of religious belief was at its peak, William Law's A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life succeeded in inspiring the most cynical men of the age with its arguments in favor of a spiritual life. Law's challenge of conventional piety and emphasis on Christian perfection directly influenced literary critic Samuel Johnson and historian Edward Gibbon, as well as Cardinal John Henry Newman. John Wesley called it one of three books that accounted for his first "explicit resolve to be all devoted to God." Also, Charles Wesley, George Whitefield, Henry Venn, William Wilberforce, and Thomas Scott each described reading the book as a major turning point in his life. More than simply a set of rules to live by, Law's book examines what it means to lead a Christian life and criticizes the perversion of Christian tenets by secular and spiritual establishments. Proclaiming that God does not merely forgive our disobedience, but directly calls us to obedience and to a life completely centered in him, he chides, "If you will here stop and ask yourself why you are not as pious as the primitive Christians were, your own heart will tell you that it is neither through ignorance nor inability, but because you never thoroughly intended it." Law's prose is fresh and vivid as he illustrates the Christian life as one lived completely for God. His thoughts on prayer, personal holiness, stewardship, pride and humility, and service to the poor will resonate with contemporary readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpts From a Holy Life By: Melody Henderson Little did she know what she was missing. She thought she was living a good and almost perfect life. She’d been deceived into thinking the one thing she lacked was a nice husband. She self-appointed herself sovereign over her little kingdoms of her inner and outer lives. She focused on becoming more of what she could be in the world. She hoped to contribute in some way to making Earth a better place. As a young adult, she wrote her own moral code and labeled herself agnostic, living with that designation for decades. She was her own God-substitute, full of self-reliance, self-confidence, and instilled with a fiercely competitive spirit. She trusted her own wisdom and natural gifts. She sought a glory that was not hers to have. (Do you, beloved?) God had another plan. This is the story of His recognized activity in her life, of His mercies, and, ultimately, a radical conversion from that which is NOT into that which IS.

Book excerpt: Central to God’s character is the quality of holiness. Yet, even so, most people are hard-pressed to define what God’s holiness precisely is. Many preachers today avoid the topic altogether because people today don’t quite know what to do with words like “awe” or “fear.” R. C. Sproul, in this classic work, puts the holiness of God in its proper and central place in the Christian life. He paints an awe-inspiring vision of God that encourages Christian to become holy just as God is holy. Once you encounter the holiness of God, your life will never be the same.
