Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grocery Trade, Vol. 1: Its History and Romance IN a recently published biography of a great writer, the word Grocer is referred to as a term of reproach, signifying a Philistine, or one who fears the light. In this volume it is my object to show that not only is the grocer a most important member of the community, but that his trade can challenge comparison with any other calling in the matter of the number of men of eminence in Politics, Literature, Philanthropy and Civic Life, who have sprung up from its ranks. No less a personage than His Majesty King Henry VIII. Honoured the trade by accepting the Freedom of the Worshipful Company of Grocers, while many of our nobility could trace descent from ancestors who purveyed groceries. I little thought when I began the attempt to compile a reliable record of a great trade, that so many difficulties would have to be encountered; neither had I anticipated the extent to which the fascination attached to the work of research would grow, as obstacle after obstacle was surmounted and new facts were brought to light. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1910 edition. Excerpt: ...It is an awfully easy thing for a man in the retail grocery business to let a good percentage of what should be his net profit get away from him through carelessness. A man might buy goods for 75cents a dozen and sell them for 10c a piece and yet fail to make any actual net profit, because through neglect he failed to stop leaks which exist in the business, but which he considered of insufiicient importance to investigate and stop. If he failed to check up the goods when they arrived and did not discover that he was a dozen packages short of a certain article, there is just that much money thrown away and the number of instances of this kind which might occur within a year, might cause him to scratch his head in wonder in case the figures were shown to him in black and white. Whole No. 322-. Instances are frequently being reported of retail grocers who buy fish and pickles by the barrel and take the trouble to count up and see whether or not they are receiving full measure on these commodities. The fact that a cask states on the outside that it contains a given number of fish, doesnot by any means assure the retailer that such is the case and ordinary business caution should prompt him to so systematize his business that he can be assured of getting what he pays for with every bill of goods that comes into his store. The Interstate Grocer quotes the remarks of a successful retailer before a body of grocers recently and says: "When I was in the grocery business," said John Mischel, retired gro cer of St. Louis, and now a member of the House of Delegates in that city, to the members of the St. Louis Retail Grocers' Association, "I paid my rent by using a nail puller. "I did it by saving all the boxes an

Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling author “digs deep into the world of how we shop and how we eat. It’s a marvelous, smart, revealing work” (Susan Orlean, #1 bestselling author). In a culture obsessed with food—how it looks, what it tastes like, where it comes from, what is good for us—there are often more questions than answers. Ruhlman proposes that the best practices for consuming wisely could be hiding in plain sight—in the aisles of your local supermarket. Using the human story of the family-run Midwestern chain Heinen’s as an anchor to this journalistic narrative, he dives into the mysterious world of supermarkets and the ways in which we produce, consume, and distribute food. Grocery examines how rapidly supermarkets—and our food and culture—have changed since the days of your friendly neighborhood grocer. But rather than waxing nostalgic for the age of mom-and-pop shops, Ruhlman seeks to understand how our food needs have shifted since the mid-twentieth century, and how these needs mirror our cultural ones. A mix of reportage and rant, personal history and social commentary, Grocery is a landmark book from one of our most insightful food writers. “Anyone who has ever walked into a grocery store or who has ever cooked food from a grocery store or who has ever eaten food from a grocery store must read Grocery. It is food journalism at its best and I’m so freakin’ jealous I didn’t write it.” —Alton Brown, television personality “If you care about why we eat what we eat—and you want to do something about it—you need to read this absorbing, beautifully written book.” —Ruth Reichl, New York Times–bestselling author
