Download or read book Sky Ranch written by Linda M. Lockwood and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-09-10 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For fans of Tara Westover’s Educated and Ivan Doig’s This House of Sky comes a memoir about a girl’s isolated ranch childhood—and her adulthood journey to overcome grief and fear and discover the truth about her mother’s mental illness. At the age of eight, Linda Lockwood moves with her family to an isolated ranch in eastern Washington State. Within two years, she’s patrolling the ranch on horseback alongside her border collie—herding sheep, killing rattlesnakes, and defending the ranch’s livestock from coyotes, bears, and even trespassing hunters—and working tirelessly to realize her dream of training horses. But her most daunting challenge is one hard work can’t overcome: her mother is descending into madness. And Linda’s deepest fear is that she might inherit the schizophrenia that threatens to dismantle her family. At age twenty-five, Linda marries, but the joy of her first pregnancy is darkened by her mother’s suicide. Then she endures a painful miscarriage and the death of her beloved grandmother, traumatic events that send her back in time to the births and deaths of animals—domesticated and wild—that she loved in childhood. Eventually, her own family grows, but her happiness is haunted by questions people have tiptoed around all her life. How did her mother become schizophrenic? What did she endure as a patient in 1960s mental hospitals? Might Linda and even her children be next to battle that catastrophic mental disorder? Driven by the courage and will she sharpened as a rancher, Linda vows to find out.
Book Synopsis The You I've Never Known by : Ellen Hopkins
Download or read book The You I've Never Known written by Ellen Hopkins and published by Margaret K. McElderry Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you live your life if your past is based on a lie? Find out in this “satisfied and moving story” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) in both verse and prose from #1 New York Times bestselling author, Ellen Hopkins. For as long as she can remember, it’s been just Ariel and Dad. Ariel’s mom disappeared when she was a baby. Dad says home is wherever the two of them are, but Ariel is now seventeen and after years of new apartments, new schools, and new faces, all she wants is to put down some roots. Complicating things are Monica and Gabe, both of whom have stirred a different kind of desire. Maya’s a teenager who’s run from an abusive mother right into the arms of an older man she thinks she can trust. But now she’s isolated with a baby on the way, and life’s getting more complicated than Maya ever could have imagined. Ariel and Maya’s lives collide unexpectedly when Ariel’s mother shows up out of the blue with wild accusations: Ariel wasn’t abandoned. Her father kidnapped her fourteen years ago. In bestselling author Ellen Hopkins’s deft hands, Ariel’s emotionally charged journey to find out the truth of who she really is balances beautifully with Maya’s story of loss and redemption. This is a memorable portrait of two young women trying to make sense of their lives and coming face to face with themselves—for both the last and the very first time.

Download or read book The Moose Club written by Jerry Caple and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-25 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is entirely fictional; none of the characters are real and any resemblance to anyone is purely accidental. However, many of the events, lakes, and places are real and many descriptions do come from events that have happened. A group of youngsters formed a club in the 1990s—the Gunflint Narrows Moose Club—with a written constitution as well. They had their own adventures on the trail, but this story is about the friendships and adventures of a group of children spending their summers and vacations learning the values of protecting our natural resources. One of the original Moose Club members is now on the board of the “Friends of the Boundary Waters,” and another is a professional photographer. About the Author Gerald (Jerry) Caple grew up in International Falls, Minnesota. He is a retired chemistry professor who currently spends the summers on Gunflint Lake (half in Canada) and the winters in Tucson. He is active in collecting water quality data and water samples for testing by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the Cook County Soil and Water Group. Jerry Caple has represented Gunflint Lake in the Cook County Coalition of Lake Associations and has been a member of the Community Advisory Group associated with the International Joint Commission, which is responsible for water quality in the Boundary Waters. This work involved meetings in International Falls, Kenora and Fort Frances, the latter two in Canada. His hobbies include fishing, hiking, canoeing, and painting. He has made about 60 hikes into the Grand Canyon, of course to fish. He still catches some walleyes from his canoe. Jerry Caple wishes to thank everyone who helped him with this project and the encouragement given to him by the Cook County Coalition of Lake Associations. Special thanks to his daughter, Shelly Anderson, who helped with the text and publishing.

That is just one question Christopher Swann explores in this compulsively readable debut, a literary thriller set in the elite—and sometimes dark—environs of Blackburne, a prep school in Virginia. When Matthias Glass’s best friend, Fritz, vanishes without a trace in the middle of an argument during their senior year, Matthias tries to move on with his life, only to realize that until he discovers what happened to his missing friend, he will be stuck in the past, guilty, responsible, alone. Almost ten years after Fritz’s disappearance, Matthias gets his chance. Offered a job teaching English at Blackburne, he gets swiftly drawn into the mystery. In the shadowy woods of his alma mater, he stumbles into a web of surveillance, dangerous lies, and buried secrets—and discovers the troubled underbelly of a school where the future had once always seemed bright. A sharp tale full of false leads and surprise turns, Shadow of the Lions is also wise and moving.
