Download or read book Yvain written by Chretien de Troyes and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1987-09-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelfth-century French poet Chrétien de Troyes is a major figure in European literature. His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. Yet because of the difficulty of capturing his swift-moving style in translation, English-speaking audiences are largely unfamiliar with the pleasures of reading his poems. Now, for the first time, an experienced translator of medieval verse who is himself a poet provides a translation of Chrétien’s major poem, Yvain, in verse that fully and satisfyingly captures the movement, the sense, and the spirit of the Old French original. Yvain is a courtly romance with a moral tenor; it is ironic and sometimes bawdy; the poetry is crisp and vivid. In addition, the psychological and the socio-historical perceptions of the poem are of profound literary and historical importance, for it evokes the emotions and the values of a flourishing, vibrant medieval past.

Book Synopsis As One Devil to Another by : Richard Platt
Download or read book As One Devil to Another written by Richard Platt and published by Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 2012-03-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As One Devil to Another is an astonishing debut work that C. S. Lewis’s biographer and foremost Lewis authority Walter Hooper calls “a stunning achievement, the finest example of the genre of diabolical correspondence to appear since this genre was popularized by C. S. Lewis.” Enter into this chilling and diabolical tale, one that reveals the very tricks and strategies of Hell. Through a series of letters between devils created by Platt, senior devil Slashreap trains his young protégé, Scardagger, to win an individual soul away from Heaven and into their clutches. As the devils plot their way to triumph, they reveal the spiritual dangers and risks we face in today’s society. Their frighteningly accurate perspective on issues such as contemporary technology and sexual mores is interwoven with timeless matters such as the power of prayer, the purpose of suffering, and the promises held out by Heaven . . . and Hell. Destined to become a modern classic, As One Devil to Another is a brilliantly written, deeply unsettling perspective on twenty-first-century society . . . a glimpse of ourselves through the eyes of those who have embraced their underworldly existence.
Download or read book 1966 and All That written by Craig Brown and published by Coronet. This book was released on 2006-06-29 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Hilarious' The Sunday Times 'Side-splitting' Daily Telegraph 'Craig Brown is the business' Independent 'Craig Brown's 1966 and All That is a fabulous spoof history of modern Britain. Inspired by its irreverent predecessor 1066 and All That, which was published in 1930, it begins with the First World War and ends with the Millennium Dome. It is effortlessly brilliant, eminently quotable and very much 'A Good Thing' ... Like the best satirists, Brown skewers our pretensions, ridicules our foibles and holds a mirror up to our times...1966 and All That is a worthy successor to 1066 and should be required reading in every school across the land.' Sebastian Shakespeare, Tatler 1966 AND ALL THAT - all the modern history you can't remember, narrated in a way you can't begin to understand.

Download or read book A Far Country written by Daniel Mason and published by Picador. This book was released on 2007-03-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When they spoke of it in town, they called it simply the city, as if it was the only city in the world ... Raised in a remote village on the edge of a sugarcane plantation, Isabel was born with the gift and curse of 'seeing farther'. When drought and war grip their land, her beloved brother Isaias joins a great exodus to a teeming, labyrinthine city in the south. Soon the fourteen-year-old Isabel follows, forsaking the only home she's ever known, her sole consolation the thought of being with her brother again. But when she arrives, she discovers that Isaias has disappeared. Weeks and then months pass, until one day, armed only with her unshakeable hope, Isabel descends into the chaos of the city to find him. Told with extraordinary empathy, richly evocative, the story of Isabel's quest - of her dignity and determination, her deeply spiritual world - becomes a universal tale about the bonds of family and a sister's love for her brother, about being caught between two worlds, and about true heroism. A tour de force of emotional and narrative power, it is destined to become a classic. 'Mason is a superb storyteller. He inhabits Isabel's mind with fine sensitivity, and cleverly uses his imaginary setting to write of dauntless, timeless love and loyalty' - The Times
