Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1911 edition. Excerpt: ... Appendix No. 1 The Currency Question. By G. M. STEELE, President of Lawrence University, AppUton, Wis. The difficulties of the currency question are perhaps greater than those of almost any other with which the political economist is called to deal. The complications and mysteries involved in it give rise to wide differences of opinion among candid men. Few probably undertake to discuss the subject without, to a greater or less extent, contradicting themselves as well as one another. I find in the works of Bastiat, the wellknown French economist, a malediction which he puts in the mouth of a man who has evidently studied the subject till he has grown quite desperate. He says: "I curse money because it is constantly confounded with wealth; and from this confusion arise errors and calamatics without number. I curse it because its functions are ill understood and very difficult of comprehension. I curse it because it confuses all ideas, causes the means to be taken for the end, the obstacle for the cause, alpha for omega; because its presence in the world, beneficial in itself, has introduced a false notion, a begging of the question, a fallacious theory, that in its numerous ramifications has impoverished man and crimsoned the earth with blood. I curse it, because I feel myself incapable of wrestling against the error to which it has given birth otherwise than by a long and fastidious dissertation to which no one will listen." Yet, notwithstanding all the bewilderments and confusions with which the subject is fraught, there must be some truth to which study and experience should bring us; some proper and practicable and efficient financial system. That the systems and methods which have been tried in modern times are vastly imperfect in...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The need for realism in reform of its monetary system is what makes Bernstein’s story of the Power of Gold so timely. It is a compelling reminder that maintaining a fixed price for gold and fixed exchange rates were difficult even in a simpler financial environment….Peter Bernstein was reluctant to project the story of gold into the future. But to me his message was clear. Yes, gold will be with us, valued not only for its intrinsic qualities but as a last refuge and store of value in turbulent times. But its days as money, as a means of payment and a fixed unit of account are gone." —From the New Foreword by Paul Volcker This bestselling book reveals a record of human nature in the ubiquity of gold with a new foreword by Paul Volcker In this exciting book, the late Peter L. Bernstein tells the story of history's most coveted, celebrated, and inglorious asset: gold. From the ancient fascinations of Moses and Midas through the modern convulsions caused by the gold standard and its aftermath, gold has led many of its most eager and proud possessors to a bad end. And while the same cycle of obsession and desperation may reverberate in today's fast-moving, electronically-driven markets, the role of gold in shaping human history is the striking feature of this tumultuous tale. Such is the power of gold. Whether it is Egyptian pharaohs with depraved tastes, the luxury-mad survivors of the Black Death, the Chinese inventor of paper money, the pirates on the Spanish Main, or the hardnosed believers in the international gold standard, gold has been the supreme possession. It has been an icon for greed and an emblem of rectitude, as well as a vehicle for vanity and a badge of power that has shaped the destiny of humanity through the ages. Discusses the beginnings of gold as something with magical, religious, and artistic qualities and follows its trail as we progress to the invention of coinage, the transformation of gold into money, and the gold standard Other bestselling books by the late Peter Bernstein: Against the Gods, Capital Ideas, and Capital Ideas Evolving Contemplates gold from the diverse perspectives of monarchs and moneyers, potentates and politicians, men of legendary wealth and others of more plebeian beginnings Far more than a tale of romantic myths, daring explorations, and the history of money and power struggles, The Power of Gold suggests that the true significance of this infamous element may lie in the timeless passions it continues to evoke, and what this reveals about ourselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changing how humans on the earth might become less overpopulating and more in balance with their environment is the thrust of this story. Survival of people requires a change in human thinking and living patterns that have endangered the earths resources as climate change stressed and altered the human future. Since human over reproduction resulted in huge energy demands as well as food production declines, what can change this tailspin of humans living out of balance with the carrying capacity of the earth? All of humanity seems in danger as people want more of everything, much more than the earth can furnish in food, living space and energy. As the earth heats up year by year with higher temperatures, what can stop the harmful ideas cemented in human thinking? Will genetic engineers save humanity?
