Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inside the Great House explores the nature of family life and kinship in planter households of the Chesapeake during the eighteenth century—a pivotal era in the history of the American family. Drawing on a wide assortment of personal documents—among them wills, inventories, diaries, family letters, memoirs, and autobiographies—as well as on the insights of such disciplines as psychology, demography, and anthropology, Daniel Blake Smith examines family values and behavior in a plantation society. Focusing on the emotional texture of the household, he probes deeply into personal values and relationships within the family and the surrounding circle of kin. Childrearing practices, male-female relationships, attitudes toward courtship and marriage, father-son ties, the character and influence of kinship, familial responses to illness and death, and the importance of inheritance—all receive extended treatment. A striking pattern of change emerges from this mosaic of life in the colonial South. What had once been a patriarchal, authoritarian, and emotionally restrained family environment altered profoundly during the latter half of the eighteenth century. The personal documents cited by Smith clearly point to the development after 1750 of a more intimate, child-centered family life characterized by close emotional bonds and by growing autonomy—especially for sons—in matters of marriage and career choice. Well-to-do planter families inculcated in their children a strong measure of selfconfidence and independence, as well as an abiding affection for their family society. Smith shows that Americans in the North as well as in the South were developing an altered view of the family and the world beyond it—a perspective which emphasized a warm and autonomous existence. This fascinating study will convince its readers that the history of the American family is intimately connected with the dramatic changes in the lives of these planter families of the eighteenth-century Chesapeake.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mystery of the Twelve Paternal Gods is a book for the century because of the mystery surrounding our paternal birth. There is a spiritual parallel between our physical paternal birth and the spiritual lineage. The paternal spirit is the type of the father’s spirit which solely decides the type of the spirit of the child, and which solely contributes the “breath of life” itself to the child at conception. This is as automatic, of a natural (spiritual) process, and out of the hands of the child’s father, as is pregnancy in a woman, and her body growing the child’s body. Without the father, the mother’s body grows the child’s body, and the man also just as essentially contributes to the life of the child, by solely contributing the spirit by which the child is multiplied, and in this has the breath of life. This mystery explains how the father’s ntoro or the spirit along with the soul interacts to form the child. This is the reason why the generational curses are passed on to a child are indicated to only come from the paternal ancestors of a child, and not the mother or the maternal ancestors, but do come from paternal ancestors on the maternal line. As you read this book you will understand the reason for some problems you are going through because there are traits in our lives which are really affecting us negatively.

Book excerpt: Thomas Sayre came with his family from England to Lynn, Massachusetts, in the early 1630's. Among descendants of Thomas were clergymen, surgeons, attorneys, ambassadors, and representatives of almost every profession. Francis B., cowboy, professor of law, and ambassador, was son-in-law of former President Woodrow Wilson. Zelda was the wife of American novelist, F. Scott Fitrzgerald, and subject of one of his books. David A. was a silversmith, banker, and founder of Lexington's Sayre School. Many Sayre descendants were taken by wars in service to America and never had the chance to win recognition for their abilities. SAYRE FAMILY another 100 years, in a large part, focuses on the early pioneers who came to or passed through the Ohio Valley of West Virginia and Ohio. At least three direct descendants of Thomas had made settlements in that area by the Nineteenth Century. One, David Sayre, came from New Jersey about 1778, and left many descendants who still lived in that area at the beginning of the Twenty-first Century. The bulk of this genealogy covers those, while other Sayre families whose ancestral links were not discovered are also included. The three generations of ancestors above each family block makes tracing easier.

Book excerpt: At the height of their power in the late eleventh century, the Chaco Anasazi dominated a territory in the American Southwest larger than any European principality of the time. A vast and powerful alliance of thousands of farming hamlets and nearly 100 spectacular towns integrated the region through economic and religious ties, and the whole system was interconnected with hundreds of miles of roads. It took these Anasazi farmers more than seven centuries to lay the agricultural, organizational, and technological groundwork for the creation of classic Chacoan civilization, which lasted about 200 years--only to collapse spectacularly in a mere 40. Why did such a great society collapse? Who survived? Why? In this lively book anthropologist/archaeologist David Stuart presents answers to these questions that offer useful lessons to modern societies. His account of the rise and fall of the Chaco Anasazi brings to life the people known to us today as the architects of Chaco Canyon, the spectacular national park in New Mexico that thousands of tourists visit every year.

She is separated from her six siblings when she and her sister are eventually adopted by a couple in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with just stories and shadowy memories of her childhood. Judy finds a deep inner strength and independence that would lead her through a life of work, acquiring a college education, raising a family while traveling, and living in various cities in the United States and abroad.

The early families of Grant and Pleasant Districts, like their Maryland and Pennsylvania neighbors, were among the first to endure the rigors of mountain life. The genealogy of some of these families--Christopher, Connor, Cunningham, King, Metheny, Ryan, Street, Thorpe, Walls, Wheeler, and Wolf, those mostly of early 19th-century provenance--is the basis of this book.

Book excerpt: Bishop's "History of Roane County" is the standard work on its subject, but its chief appeal to the genealogist can be found in the hundreds of genealogical and historical essays of pioneer families of Roane County that comprise the second half of the work. Those essays, which, in most cases, are based upon interviews conducted by the author with a surviving family member, generally go back to the early nineteenth century and pertain to migrants from Virginia and the middle states possessing British, Irish, or Scotch-Irish stock.
