Book excerpt: The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is a large breed of dog that was developed in the Swiss Alps. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is believed to be a product of mating the indigenous dog breeds found in the Swiss Alps with large mastiff types who were brought to Switzerland by foreign settlers. The breed is a member of the Sennenhund typing and is considered to be the largest and most ancient of the four breeds. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog was originally used as an all-purpose farm dog. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog was considered to be one of the most popular breeds within Switzerland but almost died out during the late 19th century due to the fact that all of the breed's duties were being performed by other breeds of dog or machines. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog has a large heavy-boned physique with immense physical strength but is relatively agile which allowed it to easily complete any farm worked that it was tasked with. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Greater Swiss Mountain Dog with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is sociable, affectionate, clam and dignified. The breed is also relatively healthy and tends to suffer dramatically less ailments that tend to hinder other large breeds of dog. It is important to note that as a working breed, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. The breed has a tricolored (black, white and tan) double coat. The breed's coat can range in length and texture from short, fine and straight to wavy, long and coarse. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, raising your Greater Swiss Mountain Dog from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between! "The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog: A Complete and Comprehensive Owners Guide to: Buying, Owning, Health, Grooming, Training, Obedience, Understanding and Caring for Your Greater Swiss Mountain Dog," by Michael Stonewood is the perfect purchase or gift for a first time Greater Swiss Mountain Dog owner. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog descends from Switzerland's most ancient dogs and is the largest of the country's four Sennenhund breeds. Although a fairly new face in the US and England, the Swissy, as he's affectionately known, excels at cart-pulling, herding and guarding: he is prized as an "all-arounder," though draft work was his original occupation. Breeders today embrace the breed's tradition and involve their dogs in carting and weight-pulling events. The breed's black, tan and white tricolor markings, in fact the hallmark of all four Swiss mountain breeds, distinguish him as a handsome working dog of impressive height and musculature: he stands 27–28 inches at the shoulder. Like his homeland, the Swissy is industrious, versatile and easy to get along with, an ideal family dog who loves children and devotedly guards them. For an owner willing to give him the exercise, training and leg room he requires, the Swissy makes an exceptional choice. This new Special Limited Edition by well-known dog author Nikki Moustaki presents a complete introduction to the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog breed, including a look at the breed's long and romantic history and its present-day status, its characteristics and owner requirements and the breed standard. Chapters instructing new owners how to select, train and care for the puppy are comprehensive and well illustrated. Additionally, the book provides advice on feeding, grooming, house-training, obedience, showing and more. An up-to-date accurate chapter on healthcare for dogs, written by Dr. Lowell Ackerman, discusses everything a responsible owner needs to know about inoculations, parasites, spaying/neutering and much more.

Book excerpt: The Bernese Mountain Dog, also commonly known as the 'Bemer Sennenhund, ' is a large-sized breed of dog that originates from the Swiss Alps. The breed was originally used as a mountain dog, an all-purpose farm dog and as a draft dog. The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large muscular breed of dog that has a distinctive tri-colored coat (mainly black and white with rust color marking around its eyes and chest). As a whole the Bernese Mountain Dog is known to be docile, friendly, good natured and self-assured. Like with all big dogs, the Bernese Mountain Dog needs to be properly socialized during its puppyhood. If properly socialized, a Bernese Mountain Dog can make a perfect companion for any small child and will live peacefully with other household pets. Due to the breeds working history, the Bernese Mountain Dog is a highly energetic breed that thrives in the outdoors. It is important to make sure that you properly exercise your Bernese Mountain Dog to avoid it developing any destructive behaviors due to boredom. Despite being a highly energetic breed the Bernese Mountain Dog does not have high levels of endurance, which makes exercising it very easy. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. Book excerpt: Bernese Mountain dogs are the second-largest breed of Sennenhund-type dogs, a group of four breeds developed to assist the herders and dairymen of the Swiss Alps in their daily lives. Not only did Sennenhund dogs like the Bernese Mountain Dog guard livestock, but they also protected the homestead and provided herding and drafting services. Modern-day Bernese are more likely to play the role of devoted companions than farm dogs—a role they excel at due to their affectionate and docile natures. All four of the Sennenhund breeds are hardy, good-natured working dogs with striking tricolored coats, but only the Bernese has gained widespread popularity in the United States. While Bernese Mountain Dogs are generally agreeable canines, early socialization and training are a must to uncover their true potential. This in-depth guide to the affable Bernese Mountain Dog will teach you how to make the most of your canine’s cooperative temperament, and how to avoid problem behaviors before they start. In the late 1600s the Great Dane was kept by German nobility and were used to hunt boars, bears and deer. Due to their gigantic size the Great Dane was used as a 'catch dog, ' and would hold the prey in place until the hunter was able to kill it. It was also common for the nobility to employ the breed as guard dogs and would normally keep a few in their bed chambers. However, likenesses of the breed have been found on ancient Egyptian and Tibetan artifacts dating back to 3000 B.C! The breed is one of the largest domesticated dog breeds in the world. A Great Dane, named Zeus, is the current world record holder for the world's tallest dog - he measured gigantic 44 inches (112cm) from paw to shoulder! Overall the Great Dane is intelligent, playful, loving, eager to please and easy to house train. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. Book excerpt: The Entlebucher Mountain Dog, also commonly known as the Entlebucher Mountain Sennenhund or the Entlebucher Cattle Dog, is a medium-sized breed of herding dog. The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is one of the four regional breeds of Sennenhunde-type dogs that originate from the Swiss Alps. The name 'Sennenhunde' comes from the Swiss word 'Senn' which refers to the herders from the Appenzell region in Switzerland. The breed was originally developed to be both a cattle herding dog and a flock guardian. There is a physical difference between the males and females of the Entlebucher Mountain Dog breed: females have a square body shape while males tend to be longer and less square shaped. The breed as a whole has a sturdily built frame, small triangular ears and relatively small brown eyes. The breed standard states that the Entlebucher Mountain Dog is 'good-natured and devoted towards people familiar to him' while being 'slightly suspicious of strangers.' However it is important to remember that the temperament of an individual dog may vary from the breed standard. Due to their size and strength it is important to make sure that your Entlebucher Mountain Dog is well socialized with both adults, children and other animals. The Entlebucher Mountain Dog in modern times is normally found as a family companion dog due to their loving and loyal nature. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. Book excerpt: The Pyrenean Mountain Dog, also more commonly known as the Great Pyrenees (especially in North America), is a large breed of dog that is mainly used as a livestock guardian. The Great Pyrenees is an incredibly old breed that has been used for hundreds of years for the purposes of protecting shepherd's livestock from predators. The earliest description of the breed dates back to as early as 1407 but was recorded for the first time by Fray Miguel Agustin, who was the 'prior' of the temple in Catalan, in his book which was published on the 1617. Agustin also states that the Great Pyrenees has a white coat to allow it be clearly visible during both night and day, which allows the shepherd to clearly see when the flock is in danger. The Great Pyrenees has a weather resistant double coat which consists of long, thick and coarse overcoat that lies flat the Great Pyrenees's body. The overcoat also covers the breed's wooly, fine and densely packed undercoat. The Great Pyrenees coat is much more profuse around its neck and shoulders which create the appearance of a mane. The Great Pyrenees also has a great deal of feathering along the back of its legs and thighs. The hair on the dog's face and ears is much shorter and finer than the hairs on the rest of its body. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Great Pyrenees. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Great Pyrenees with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Great Pyrenees is a confident, gentle and affection breed. They are known to be incredibly territorial and protective due to their history as a flock guardian. The Great Pyrenees is also known to be a nocturnal breed, again, due to its history as a flock guardian. The breed's nocturnal nature is important to consider when choosing to own a Great Pyrenees. While the Great Pyrenees is known to be aggressive towards animals it deems to be a threat, the breed is typically very calm, docile and gentle around harmless animals and small children due to its natural guardian instinct. It is important to note that as a working breed, the Great Pyrenees has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Great Pyrenees has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Leonberger is a giant breed of dog that originates from Germany. The breed is also commonly known as the 'Gentle Giant, ' the 'Gentle Lion, ' and as simply the 'Leo.' The Leonberger's name is derived from the city of Leonberg which is in the Baden-Wurttemberg region of Germany. The Leonberger is believed to have come into existence in the mid-1850s when a Landseer Newfoundland was mixed with a Saint Bernard, and later a Pyrenean Mountain Dog. Traditionally the Leonberger has a long white coat, which was considered very fashionable at the time. The modern Leonberger has a much darker coat and will usually have a black mask covering most of its face and muzzle. The breed's numbers suffered dramatically during World War I and World War II as most of the Leonberger breeders were killed, fled Germany or enrolled in the military. During the World Wars, the Leonberger was mainly used to pull carts full of ammunition to and from the front line. Traditionally the Leonberger breed was employed as a general purpose farm dog or a guard dog. The Leonberger has a very unique water-resistant double coat on its body and very short fine hairs on its muzzle and limbs. The breed's durable outer coat is relatively straight and lies flat to the dog's body. Interestingly the Leonberger is a dimorphic breed as it possesses either a strongly masculine or elegantly feminine form, which allows the breed's gender to be immediately discernible. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Leonberger. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Leonberger with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Leonberger is known to be a friendly, submissive, obedient and hardworking breed. They are also known to be incredibly playful under the right circumstances. The breed is also known to be intelligent, loyal and robust and is capable of performing a wide variety of work related tasks. It is important to note that as a working breed, the Leonberger has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Leonberger has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. It is one of the four regional breeds of Sennenhunde-type dogs that originate from the Swiss Alps. The name 'Sennenhunde' comes from the Swiss word 'Senn' which refers to the herders from the Appenzell region in Switzerland. The breed was originally developed to be both a cattle herding dog and a flock guardian. The breed is extremely loyal and has been to known to give their own lives to protect their herd! In modern times they are mainly employed as an all-purpose farm dog or simply kept as a very loving and loyal companion dog. The breed has a heavy and athletic build and a distinctive tri-colored coat. They have small triangular ears which are set high on the face. The breed has a thick, shiny topcoat and a long and thick undercoat. The breed is easy to groom but sheds profusely. It is important to note that while Appenzeller Sennenhunde are very affectionate towards humans, they have been known to nip at small children to 'herd' them. The breed is a cross between the English Bulldog and French Terriers (and other breeds that hunt rats) and came into existence in the early 1800s. The French Bulldog ranked as the 9th most popular breed in the USA and the 4th most popular breed in the United Kingdom in 2014! The French Bulldog comes in a wide variety of coat colorations including: fawn, cream, black, brindle, white and even blue (a light steely gray color). The French Bulldog should appear small, muscular, heavy boned, active, compactly built and have a smooth coat. They should also have a large square shaped head with a broad, deep and well laid back muzzle. A French Bulldog should have a short nose with broad and well defined nostrils. The breed's name translates from the Italian words Cane, meaning 'dog, and Corso, meaning 'courtyard or guard.' The breed is also commonly referred to as the 'Italian Mastiff' and the 'Italian Corso.' The Cane Corso is a distant descendant of the Canis Pugnax, which was a breed used by the Romans as attack dogs during war time. Traditionally the Cane Corso was used to hunt and catch large prey such as boar, deer and bears as well as used by farmers to guard cattle. The breed was quickly employed as night watchdogs, keepers and bodyguards due to their high levels of intelligence, trainability and loyalty. In modern times the breed is mainly kept as a domesticated companion dog but also is still used for its original farming purposes. The Cane Corso has a similar appearance to the Italian Molosser, but has a much large build. The Cane Corso is muscly but is less bulky than other breeds within the Mastiff typing. It is important to note that the Cane Corso is not a breed recommended for novice dog owners! As previously mentioned the Cane Corso is both loyal, trainable and intelligent but it is also incredibly head strong. A Cane Corso puppy needs strong leadership and consistent training to ensure that it is a well behaved dog. It is also important to socialize your Cane Corso at an early age to encourage a more relaxed nature. Although not an aggressive breed, the Cane Corso is known to become highly protective over their family unit during serious threats. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet.
