Book excerpt: Anyone who serves teenagers today knows that more and more young people are eager to make a difference in the world. When students participate in short-term missions, service, and justice causes, parents and youth leaders hope these experiences will lead to real transformation. But research shows that our efforts don’t always stick. If we truly want short-term work to translate into long-term change, leaders and students must spend more time before, during, and after service projects preparing for and processing their experiences. The sessions in this leader’s guide will help you create experiences that stick—both for the students you take and the communities you serve. This guidebook offers a host of practical and field-tested exercises for each phase of your experience, whether it’s a half-day local service project or a two-week trip overseas. Participants will engage in hands-on experiences to gain new insights about themselves, their relationship with God, their teammates, and the world we’re called to love and serve. Each of these steps is a catalyst in helping students apply what they have learned in the field to their own lives back at home. Also included are ideas to help get parents and the whole church engaged in service together. A companion student journal is also available to boost the potential for personal application throughout the journey.

Book excerpt: "Using a multidisciplinary approach, Youth Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior breaks away from traditional thinking that places activity and sedentary behavior on a single continuum, which may limit progress in addressing youth inactivity. Instead, the authors encourage readers to focus on how sedentary and physically active behaviors coexist and consider how the two behaviors may have different determinants." "Youth Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior: Challenges and Solutions considers current research about youth physical activity and sedentary behavior across a range of personal factors as well as cultural and social influences. The text communicates the knowledge base on developmental, economic, psychological, and social factors related to youth physical activity and sedentary behavior and provides an overview of youth-specific approaches to addressing the problem of inactivity among youth."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Council of Europe youth sector aims at enabling young people across Europe to actively uphold, defend, promote and benefit from the Council of Europe’s core values of human rights, democracy and the rule of law, notably by strengthening young people’s access to rights, deepening youth knowledge and broadening youth participation. The activities of the European Youth Centres of Budapest and Strasbourg play a central role in the education and training of young ‘multipliers’ of Council of Europe values. The core of these activities is the programme of study sessions, week-long intercultural non-formal learning activities that are held in cooperation with European youth organisations and networks. These activities bring to the Youth for Democracy programme of the Council of Europe the unique experiences, expectations and concerns of young people regarding contemporary issues and challenges that affect their access to rights and of participating in all spheres of society. The study sessions of the European Youth Centres have been trendsetters in European youth work and remain a benchmark for intercultural youth activities. This manual is published to support the quality of study sessions and other educational activities in the Youth for Democracy programme. Preparing facilitators and developing their competences is one of the essential prerequisites for enabling exchanges of views and dialogical learning, preparing the participants to act as multipliers in their day-to-day lives, and ultimately contributing to the values and priorities of the Council of Europe and its youth sector. This Manual for Facilitators provides essential information, insights and practical tips in the planning and delivering of non-formal education intercultural activities while taking into account essential approaches of intercultural learning, human rights education and youth participation. This manual is a contribution to the quality of intercultural non-formal education activities of youth organisations and at making those activities a truly learning experience for young people in the Council of Europe.

Book excerpt: The book “Youth and Terrorist Activities in Borno State, Nigeria” is a PhD Thesis which dissects the origin of Bokoharam terrorist-sect and its module operandi in Nigeria. It gives an insight into the three (3) major influential factors boosting the sect’s activities. The factors are highlighted to include: socioeconomic condition (poverty), political motivation and religious fanaticism. The Youth remains the subset of vulnerability in all of this and, at the same time, the youth is the same instrument of chaos. In line with its theoretical discourse, the thesis anchors its proven assumptions around the theory of anomie and Cohen’s Sub-Cultural strain theory. With its use of survey method and other qualitative approaches in analyzing information from primary sources such as the direct victims and the captured Bokoharam sect-members; the thesis’ hypotheses are established. The hypotheses are established to confirm youth-exploitation as a result of deepening poverty, politically-driven terrorism and strong fanaticism challenge in Borno and indeed within the Nigerian state at large.
