Book excerpt: With its distinctive, comical walk, large bill, and association with the conservation movement, the pelican has attained iconic status. But as Barbara Allen reveals, this graceful skimmer of ocean waves has a checkered history. Originally classed as “unclean” in the King James Bible, the legend of the compassionate pelican was later appropriated by Christianity to symbolize Christ’s sacrifice. This majestic bird, gifted to British royalty in 1664, has been celebrated in art and literature, from Shakespeare’s King Lear to the writing of Edward Lear, and is the holder of three Guinness World Records. The pelican’s anatomy has been copied for paper plane construction, aircraft design, and in 3D imaging, and its resilience is as remarkable as its make-up: the pelican has rallied against threats of extinction, habitat destruction, and environmental disasters such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. A must-read book for all bird enthusiasts, Barbara Allen’s Pelican weaves together wildlife trivia, historical tales, and the latest research to provide an engaging, many-feathered account of this emblematic bird.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basil Bernstein began to develop his theory of social structure and power relations during the 1950s and 1960s. Early in the 1960s he met M. A. K. Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan, who were developing the first formulations of what would become known as systemic functional (SF) linguistic theory. A far-reaching dialogue began. Bernstein recognized the significant role that language plays in the construction of social experience and social inequality. Halliday and Hasan were actively seeking a theory of language that would explain the nature of the social. In different ways, they acknowledged the powerful role of language in the social construction of experience. Their resulting enquiries brought both theories and scholars into dialogue. Contributors to this volume (including Hasan and Bernstein) continue this dialogue in a range of papers that draw on both SF linguistic theory (with special reference to genre) and Bernstein's sociological theory, particularly with reference to his later work on pedagogic device and pedagogic discourse. Several authors describe the influence of these theories on classroom practice, including English and mathematics, and literacy teaching in indigenous schools. Pedagogy and the Shaping of Consciousness is an important contribution to the explication of the two theories, the dialogue which they continue to provoke, and their contribution to the provision of more equal access to education.

Book excerpt: Bumbling Bumble Bees Asphalt Bungle shows how two small-time crooks screw-up their hoped-for last score. In the comedic-suspense original screenplay Asphalt Bungle (published by AuthorHouse), by author Lawrence J. Corneck, readers meet two strange dudes, their myriad criminal cohorts and a caper that goes completely kablooey. When Edwin is released from prison, he is met by his supposed best pal Bongo. Ready for his first post-prison meal at Brooklyn Dreams Diner, Edwin expects an easy evening. But things havent been easy for Edwin in quite some time. So, when a he gets caught up in a bust at the diner, it seems like the Golden Goose has arrived; that is until Edwin and Bongo launch a plan to steal a priceless painting from a safe in the home of a sex-crazed octogenarian gangster carrying on an affair with a bipolar scamming Russian waitress working for an entrepreneurial thug. Played against the backdrop of New York City, Asphalt Bungle, with its dizzying cast of eccentric characters and humorous plot twists, is a thinking mans suspense story. With equal parts hilarity and pop insight, the story takes the classic heist story and turns it into a Shakespearean feast. Bad judgment calls, double-crossing alliances, court-jesters, an off-beat love story brewing in impossible circumstances - Asphalt Bungle includes it all.

Book excerpt: Physical landscapes are one of the most fascinating facets of our Planet, which tell stories about the evolution of the surface of the Earth. This book provides up-to-date information about the geomorphology of the selected ‘classic’ sites from around the world and shows the variety of geomorphological landscapes as moulded by different sets of processes acting over different timescales, from millions of years to days. The volume is written by nearly fifty geomorphologists from more than twenty countries who for many years have researched some of the unique sceneries on the planet. The thirty six chapters present each continent of the world. They describe landscapes of different origin, so that the reader can learn about the complexity of processes behind the sceneries. This is a useful reference book, linking geomorphology with global initiatives focused on nature conservation.
