Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Work in America, Vol. 2: January, 1927 These were the hostile forces against which the solid rock had to contend in order to maintain its existence as such. Do you find anything here but competition of the elements of Nature with the established conditions within the stone? So far as the stone is concerned, certainly there is nothing we have Observed that would strongly suggest the kindly influence of cooperation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Work in America, Vol. 2: The Philosophy of Individual Life; May, 1926 After brief introductions all around, Brother Joseph be came the active center of gravity and for more than two hours gave the friends, both collectively and individually, a series of demonstrations of his psychic powers - such as few, if any of the friends, had ever witnessed. Though he had never before met most of these friends, yet within the short time at his command he gave to some 25 or more personal readings which proved his contention that Thoughts are things and established his ability to convey to them his own thoughts telepathically, as well as look into their own lives with clear vision, and disclose to them the things they had theretofore concealed from the whole world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Action, Vol. 2: The Great Work in America Dear Friend And Brother: - I am in receipt of a copy of "The American Freemason" [for January, 1911], which Journal I heartily congratulate, in that its editorial destiny is in your personal keeping. The copy referred to comes to me very carefully marked with blue pencil, in such manner as more especially to call my attention to your interesting "Open Letter to the Freeman's Journal," at page 114 et seq. Whether I am indebted to you personally for this distinguished courtesy, or to some other kind Friend and Brother who is interested in my personal welfare and enlightenment, does not appear in the marking. But in either event, inasmuch as the closing paragraph of your "Open Letter" is marked with special care, I am led to infer that the kind and thoughtful sender of this marked copy is laboring under the impression that I am one of "those of the fraternity" whom you "would no less severely criticise" for "sending copies" of a certain libelous article which a short time ago appeared as a leading editorial in "The New World" [Roman Catholic Official Organ for the arch-diocese of Chicago], "broadcast to the Lodges, to foment hatred where there is no immediate need," etc. [The italics are mine.] About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: "Audubon's Elephant was the nickname given to John James Audubon's masterpiece, The Birds of America--an oversized folio of 435 life-size ornithological prints that remains to this day the most compelling depiction of bird life in the United States. Born in Haiti and raised in France, Audubon spent much of his adult life as a struggling American businessman on the frontier, where his obsession with birds nearly brought him to financial ruin. In 1826, his ambitious project was also in a precarious position--his folio remained unfinished, without an American publisher willing to fund it. Had Audubon not set sail for England, his artistic triumph might easily have turned into failure"--Publisher's description.

This book was released on 2014-04-14 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity (Elizabeth Catez) is a mystic of our times, who entered Carmel in 1901 at the age of twenty-one, and died there five years later. Her biblical spirituality, based on the epistles of her "dear Saint Paul" and the mystery of the divine indwelling, has inspired countless Christians. This second of three volumes of her Complete Works contains all of Elizabeth's surviving letters from Carmel, along with 8 photos. In simple and tender language, writing to friends and family, Elizabeth returns again and again to the great themes of her spirituality: the indwelling Trinity, silence and solitude, living by love, becoming a "praise of glory" (laudem gloriae) by sharing in the dying and rising of Jesus Christ. Here too we find many of her best-known sayings, e.g., "I have found my heaven on earth, for heaven is God, and God is in my soul." In his introductions and careful notes, Father Conrad De Meester, O.C.D., explains the background of each of Elizabeth's letters from Carmel, most of which have never before appeared in English. Anne Englund Nash continues the style set in the first volume of the Complete Works, presenting a translation that reflects both the literary nuances and spirit of the original French texts.

This book was released on 1983-07-04 with total page 1660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of two Library of America volumes (the companion volume here) presenting, in compact form, all seven parts of Francis Parkman’s monumental narrative history of the struggle for control of the American continent. Thirty years in the writing, Parkman’s “history of the American forest” is an accomplishment hardly less awesome than the explorations and adventures he so vividly describes. The story reaches its climax with the fatal confrontation of two great commanders at Quebec’s Plains of Abraham—and a daring stratagem that would determine the future of a continent. Count Frontenac and New France under Louis XIV (1877) details how France might have won her imperial struggle with England. Frontenac, a courtier who was made governor of New France by that most sagacious of monarchs, oversaw the colony’s brightest era of growth and influence. Had Canada’s later governors possessed his administrative skill and personal force, his sense of diplomacy and political talent, or his grasp of the uses of power in a modern world, the English colonies to the south might have become part of what Frontenac saw as a continental scheme of French dominion. England’s American colonies flourished, while France, in both the Old World and the New, declined from its greatness of the late seventeenth century. Conflict over the developing western regions of North America erupted in a series of colonial wars. As narrated by Parkman in A Half-Century of Conflict (1892), these American campaigns, while only part of a larger, global struggle, prepared the colonies for the American Revolution. In Montcalm and Wolfe (1884) Parkman describes the fatal confrontation of the two great French and English commanders whose climactic battle marked the end of French power in America. As the English colonies cooperated for their own defense, they began to realize their common interests, their relative strength, and their unique position. In this imperial war of European powers we also begin to see the American figures—Benjamin Franklin, George Washington—soon to occupy a historical stage of their own.
