Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Unmarried Viewed from the standpoints of racial well-being, national prosperity, hygiene, and morality, marriage is a biological and social dut In Great Britain the state of wedlock is esteeme as an ideal. The union is made holy by ecclesiastic sanction, protected and regulated by the law, and commended by economists, moralists, and reformers. It is cherished, extolled, and advocated by poets and preachers. Yet strangely, any hint of suggested reforms for the facilitation and encouragement of matrimony imbues a number of the apparent advocates of the essential institution with alarm or indignation. Book excerpt: The Convert is about the British Suffrage movement, which the author knew well. Part witty and scathing commentary on the upper classes, part political rhetoric quoted directly from open-air meetings, and part muck-raking realism, it moves back and forth between the personal and the political until the two can no longer be distinguished. The Convert uses as its frame the political "conversion" of Vida Levering, a beautiful, upper middle-class woman. We follow Vida's growing discontent with "country weekend" society and her increasing awareness of the common lot of women. Forthright and direct, Elizabeth Robins discusses issues that must have been shocking in 1907: unwed motherhood, the effects of the inequality of women, and the essential disrespect that underlies chivalry. Reminiscent of Jane Austen and foreshadowing the work of Virginia Woolf, The Convert is a fascinating novel. It provides us with a sense of history and a feeling of pride in what women could and did accomplish. It is also disturbing because far too many of the issues are still relevant.

Book excerpt: "Dinner was nearly over, the simple dessert was being portioned out, the old priest's voice seemed to recover itself like a runner's breath, gaining new impetus when he sees the relieving goal and the words seemed to penetrate even Richard's deep absorption. In ancient days the cliffs outside of Jerusalem were the battle-ground for many war ring Chieftains. They have witnessed so much bloodshed that they have been rightly called the Red Ascent. But cannot the path of every man, who struggles to attain the heights of idealism, be likened to that bloody road? The reading stopped abruptly. The heavy chairs were pushed back noisily from the table, the students rose, and murmuring a short thanksgivin, they filed out of the dining-room Richard leaned over and whispered to the man in front of him."--Excerpt from The Red Ascent (amazon.com).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world?
