Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Poets of Italy, in Prose and Verse: Including a Condensation in Rhyme of Dante's Divine Comedy, and a Critical Introductory Review of Italian Poets and Poetry From Mediaeval to Modern Times Some time ago the perhaps too ambitious idea sug gested itself to me to write The Lives of the Poets, a cosmopolitan work embracing many names, memoirs and countries. I felt that with our modern and rapid means of communication and transportation, with the vast amount of world travel and interchange of lan guage and ideas between the scholars and literary men and women of the different nations of the Earth occur ring to-day (or at least until temporarily arrested by the present great international cataclysm), the poet and the poetical biographer should be able to say with Wesley of old, The World is my parish. I felt, too, that the only work that claims to-day that all-embracing title, that of the famous Samuel Johnson, in spite of its wit, its scholarship, its many classical allusions and. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Divine Comedy (1320) is a narrative poem by Dante Alighieri. Begun in 1308 while Dante was exiled from his native Florence, The Divine Comedy—a long poem divided into three books of 33 cantos each—presents the author’s spiritual journey from sinfulness and despair to salvation and self-understanding. Written in the Tuscan vernacular, the poem was influential in establishing a standardized Italian language. In the first book, Inferno, Dante is led by the Roman poet Virgil into Hell. There, he comes to terms with his own sinfulness while observing the horrors and tortures suffered by those condemned to eternity in its circles. Along the way, Dante encounters historical figures, acquaintances, and other individuals whose violence, fraud, treachery, and betrayal led their spirits to terrible suffering. This technique, which incorporates dialogue with detailed description, is used throughout The Divine Comedy to provide context on historical, theological, and political subjects while simultaneously situating the poet as narrator and interlocutor in his own work. In this way, the physical and spiritual journey portrayed in the poem becomes a journey for Dante himself, a way of transcending the despair he describes at its beginning. In Purgatorio, Dante follows Virgil on an ascent of the Mountain of Purgatory, where he encounters the souls of sinners who must atone for their actions in life before entering Heaven. Leaving Virgil behind, Dante, in Paradiso, follows a divine Beatrice through the celestial spheres of Heaven. As he approaches God and his own salvation, changed by a newfound sense of “the Love which moves the sun and the other stars,” Dante ascends to the heights of world literature, uniting the created soul and the artist’s creation as no other poet has done before or since. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy is a classic of Italian literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book excerpt: The Divine Comedy (Italian: Divina Commedia) is an epic poem by Dante Alighieri, begun c. 1308 and completed 1320, a year before his death in 1321. It is widely considered the preeminent work of Italian literature and is seen as one of the greatest works of world literature. The poem's imaginative vision of the afterlife is representative of the medieval world-view as it had developed in the Western Church by the 14th century. It helped establish the Tuscan language, in which it is written, as the standardized Italian language. It is divided into three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. On the surface, the poem describes Dante's travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise or Heaven; but at a deeper level, it represents, allegorically, the soul's journey towards God. At this deeper level, Dante draws on medieval Christian theology and philosophy, especially Thomistic philosophy and the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas. Consequently, the Divine Comedy has been called "the Summa in verse". The work was originally simply titled Comedìa and was later christened Divina by Giovanni Boccaccio. The first printed edition to add the word divina to the title was that of the Venetian humanist Lodovico Dolce, published in 1555 by Gabriele Giolito de' Ferrari.
