Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Peace Tiie Great War is passing and the Great Peace approaches. The conflict, prolonged and widened beyond our utmost fears, is entering upon its fifth year as these lines are written. The end is not yet, but the indications are getting clearer that the end is approaching and that the end is to be as we wish. Beyond doubt an extremely stubborn conflict is still before us, with losses that will stagger humanity and with possible vicissitudes of fortune which may at times obscure the issue, but a calm survey Of the situation from a point withdrawn from the smoke of battle permits but one conclu sion. The initial advantage Of German preparedness has disappeared, and the superior resources of the Allies in men and materials are unmistakably apparent. The crude and hesitant allied strategy of the early months of the war has been succeeded by clear vision and fixed purpose. The al most insuperable difficulties in the way of unified command have been overcome. Leadership, if not of Napoleonic genius, yet forged in the heat of the great conflict and of demonstrated competency, has been assured. Above all the incoherence of thought and confusion of purpose, always the supreme danger in democratic governments, have been climi nated. The onslaught of the highly organized Central Pow ers. Which so nearly overwhelmed us at the outset, has trans formed our unbridled, wanton energy into disciplined power. The more the struggle is prolonged, the more complete that transformation will be and the more assured our triumph. Such is the outlook at this hour. It may deceive us, for nothing is sure before the event, but if the outcome is not. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Peace: Being a New Year's Greeting to Our Motherland and the Nations at Present in Conflict and a Welcome to Them All to the Feast of the Great Peace And the men who feel themselves called or impelled so to fight are yet under the law of this present world order, and they would certainly be doing a serious and great wrong, both to their own soul or real nature, and to their country, by shirking their responsibility in refus ing so to fight. For theirs, too, is an inner or divine urge or inspiring force, but it is not the Christly urge. It is yet of the Genius of the world-soul or present order. But if we are in the Christ-degree we are under the law of Christ, and the righteousness of the Christ-order, and that alone, can we fulfil. A group of starving artists- led by a reclusive, sweatpants-wearing billionaire- are determined to overthrow the government by any means necessary. With little hope for peace, a neurotic young gadabout- fresh off a failed suicide attempt- takes it upon himself to save his hometown from ruin. Along the way he encounters revolutionaries, nitwits, weirdos, perverts, dreamers, and something called Danceramics. Humorous, absurd, and often profound, The Great Peace takes on art, politics, philosophy, and class with unflinching verve and wit.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Fourth Year: Anticipations of a World Peace In the latter half of 1914 a few of us were writing that this war was a "War of Ideas." A phrase, "The War to end War," got into circulation, amidst much sceptical comment. It was a phrase powerful enough to sway many men, essentially pacifists, towards taking an active part in the war against German imperialism, but it was a phrase whose chief content was its aspiration. People were already writing in those early days of disarmament and of the abolition of the armament industry throughout the world; they realized fully the element of industrial belligerency behind the shining armour of imperialism, and they denounced the "Krupp-Kaiser" alliance. But against such writing and such thought we had to count, in those days, great and powerful realities. Even to those who expressed these ideas there lay visibly upon them the shadow of impracticability; they were very "advanced" ideas in 1914, very Utopian. Against them was an unbroken mass of mental habit and public tradition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But, in order that everything possible may be done to avoid these evils in the future, it is necessary that those who influence the opinion of the various nations should have a clear apprehension of all the means which are available for the preservation of peace, and, at the same time, that they should appreciate the danger of placing excessive reliance upon the efficacy of any particular measure. At present there appears to be a disposition on the part of many generous minds to believe that the formation of a League of Nations for the purpose of preventing wars will in itself result in the practical maintenance of general peace. It certainly, indeed, seems probable that a confederacy of this kind, which has been advocated by several great thinkers in the course of the last few centuries, will be actually established at no distant date. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genesis of War and the Foundation of Peace In proceeding to disentangle and lay straight in our understanding the elements of any one of the complex problems that harass the life of the race, it is necessary to trace pres ent conditions from the1r pomt of origin. It may be said, strictly, that the finite mind is not capable of dealing with origins. But we can greatly aid our thinking by excluding inc1 dentals and thereby reducing the complexity of the problem to its simplest terms; we can return, in our thought, to that stage of de velopment Where human life included only the simple, fundamental relations and experi ences. Today it includes essentially no more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Years of Peace Ever brief, of the relations between Great Britain and the United States since 1812 is to possess any value, it can only be through showing how, by slow steps, with many interruptions and much bitterness on both sides, we have nevertheless finally attained to the genuine friendship in which all sen sible men of both countries rejoice to-day. This fortunate condition has been reached only after many years of storm and stress, which it seems to posterity, always blessed with that unerring wisdom which comes after the event, might have been easily avoided. To understand the present situation aright, to comprehend the meaning and effects of the war of 1812 and Of the ninety eight years of peace which have followed its conclusion, it is necessary to begin with the separation of the two countries by the Treaty of Paris in 1782, when the connec tion between England and the United States ceased to be that of mother country and colonies and became the more distant rela tion which exists between two independent. For America has lost her isolation. She has become a world-power. Our economic relations are as wide as the world. The peace which follows will determine our foreign policy. It will make for permanent peace or it may lay the mines of future wars. Previous peace settlements have been interim arrangements negotiated by the ruling classes. They have been truce agreements. War has, in fact, been continuous. At times it was a war of diplomacy. At intervals it became armed conflict. But in some form or other Europe has been at war for the last fifty years. The conflict was not always between the same Powers. Alliances shifted. The points in dispute were often far apart. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The League of Nations: The Way to the World's Peace The German banner of the World's Peace - the Reichstag's Peace Resolution of the 19th July, 1917 - bears these devices: "Peace by understanding and lasting reconciliation of the Nations." "The Reichstag will energetically promote the establishment of the guarantees of international jurisprudence." This was the oath of allegiance to the League of Nations, which since then has made its triumphant progress throughout the world, although it has also made its appearance, under various guises, in isolated countries. In this volume it will he considered, in detail, how the Reichstag Resolution is to be carried into effect in everyday life; how the way may be cleared for the peace of the world. This book will arouse much opposition, and will encounter many criticisms, but may nevertheless conduce to the elucidation of the subject, for we can no longer make any further headway to-day by means of catchwords and headlines.
