Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Pacific Coast The purpose of the present work is to treat of the vast region of the Pacific Coast of North and South America as a physical and political entity, seen from the point of view of the observant traveller from jour neys extending over a number of years: a task never perhaps attempted before. The excellent recep tion accorded to my former travel books, dealing with some of the States of South and North America, is borne out by the pile of favourable reviews and of numerous letters from readers at home and abroad which I have; and the several editions which have been reached in a short space: and these seem to offer a measure of popularity for the present work. To those (few) reviewers who have objected to intimate descrip tions I would reply that these books, having at base a geographical purpose, are written to interest the ordinary reader and student of trav'ei-lgre, rather than for the scientist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pacific Coast Vacation The phenomenon of the aurora was ex plained to us, but to our childish imagination Aurora ever remained a maiden whose wonder ful hair of rainbow tints lit up the northern sky. We talked of Aurora, we dreamed of Aurora, and now we are off to see the charming ice maiden of our childhood fancy. Off to Alaska. For years we have dreamed of it; for days and weeks we have breakfasted on Rocky Mountain fiora, lunched on icebergs and glaciers and dined on totem poles and In dian chiefs. Much of the charm of travel in any country comes of the glamour with which fable and legend have enshrouded its historic places. America is rapidly developing a legendary era. Travel up and down the shores of the historic Hudson and note her fabled places. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life at Shut-in Valley: And Other Pacific Coast Tales Shut-in Valley lay bathed in sunlight - the bright, intense sunlight of California, that burns and crisps but does not wilt. Down the white, winding road a cloud of dust betokened the swift gallop of a stray horseman - some hunter, probably, or a visitor from the town, twenty-five miles away, to one of the ranches still farther up the mountains. No further sign of life was manifest, save in the doorway of a low, weather beaten cabin at the extreme lower end of the valley, where a young woman in a plain calico gown stood, with her deep blue eyes wearily scanning the landscape. Not even the rude and uninviting setting of this living picture could detract from its plainly apparent claim to more than ordinary interest. It was a graceful figure and a high-bred face - delicate, sensitive, full of intelligence and refinement, of sadness, too, as its owner slowly turned away and disappeared from sight. "What a life!" Marian Curtis was saying in her heart. "How can I endure it?" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. China, of the Pacific Mail Line. We steamed slowly down through the Golden Gate and past the silent guns of Alcatraz, which command its entrance, out to the open sea. The next morning we felt the breath of the tropics and on the sixth day we sighted the Hawaiian Islands, the Paradise of the Pacific. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways and Byways of the Pacific Coast The several volumes in this series have as a rule very little to say of the large towns. Country life is their chief topic, especially the typical and the picturesque. TO the traveller, no life is more interesting, and yet there is none with which it is so difficult to get into close and unconventional contact. Ordinarily, we catch only casual glimpses. For this reason I have wandered much on rural byways and lodged most of the time at village hotels or in rustic homes. My trips have taken me to many characteristic and famous regions; but always in both text and pictures I have tried to Show actual life and nature and to convey some of the pleasure I experienced in my intimate acquaintance with the people. These Highways and Byways volumes are often consulted by persons who are planning pleasure tours. To make the books more helpful for this purpose each chapter has a note appended containing suggestions for intending travellers. With the aid of these notes, I think the reader can readily decide what regions are likely to prove particularly worth visiting, and will know how to see such regions with the most comfort and facility. Book excerpt: Excerpt from San Francisco, Vol. 2: A History of the Pacific Coast Metropolis Irrigation received its first genuine impetus when the prospect of breaking up the big ranches began to take on a more definite shape than that of mere hope. This did not occur until the dissatisfaction of the struggling small farmer attracted the attention and enlisted the sympathy of the city. Workers, who deserve the credit of being among the earliest to perceive that the growth of the state was largely dependent upon the subdivision of the great ranches and their passing into the possession of small owners. In the convention which formulated the plank which declared that all unimproved land should be taxed the same as though settled and improved, the danger of permitting a tenant system to be developed received ample attention, as did also the menace contained in the possibility of large land owners being permitted to work their estates with cheap Oriental labor. The necessity of making the' state attractive to immigrants, and the good results which would ensue from the creation of a population mainly made up of small farmers were likewise emphasized and the rational view which subsequently pre vailed was clearly set forth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from San Francisco, Vol. 1: A History of the Pacific Coast Metropolis The information, and the imagination necessary to present a graphic and more extended account were not lacking, but the historian was dealing with the events of centuries, and was compelled, while observing the limitations of space, to preserve the sense of proportion. To him tragedies and great calamities were as the ripples on the surface of a pond when a stone is thrown into its depths. When the transitory disturbance ceased the stone was forgotten. Whether consciously or unconsciously Gibbon recognized that it is the sum total of human happenings and experience which make history, and by a process of condensation which permitted him to mo mentarily turn the limelight of his genius on significant occurrences he succeeded in producing a picture from which a vivid impression is derived, although the canvas is crowded in places to the point of confusion. To California and the Pacific Coast The promises made by the writer when the invitation was extended were more than kept. And at the Farewell! At the Oakland Mole. There was an increase rather than a decrease of enthusiastic appreciation. It was then that the writing of a book descriptive of the trip was suggested. And the pleasant task fell into my hands. The 1910 trip, as was that of 1896. Was planned by the Southern Cali fornia Hotel Association, under the presidency of John S. Mitchell. Of the Hollenbeck and the Alexandria. But, as is well known in our State. And growing to be well known throughout the country. California is a unit in working for its own welfare and. Therefore. The California Hotel Asso ciation, of San Francisco. Was asked to join with the Southern California Hotel Association in extending the invitation. Exactly as they did on the former occasion. Although San Francisco was still working strenuously to completely recover from the disastrous effects of the tragedy of 1906, she responded with her usual cordiality and vim. And the result was the invitation was extended by the two associations that the annual meeting be held in Los Angeles in 1910. And entertainment be extended throughout the State to San Francisco. The invitation was duly accepted. And we have yet to hear of one person who has regretted it. The results. Better than any words of mine. Show how successfully everything was done. Nothing was forgotten no one was ignored, everyone and everything was attended to. So that the program went through without a hitch.
