Book excerpt: The Great God Pan is a horror and fantasy novella by Welsh writer Arthur Machen. Machen was inspired to write The Great God Pan by his experiences at the ruins of a pagan temple in Wales. What would become the first chapter of the novella was published in the magazine The Whirlwind in 1890. Machen later extended The Great God Pan and it was published as a book alongside another story, "The Inmost Light", in 1894. The novella begins with an experiment to allow a woman named Mary to see the supernatural world. This is followed by an account of a series of mysterious happenings and deaths over many years surrounding a woman named Helen Vaughan. At the end, the heroes confront Helen and force her to kill herself. She undergoes a series of supernatural transformations before dying and she is revealed to be the child of Mary and the god Pan.

Book excerpt: THE GREAT GOD PAN The Great God Pan is a succinct gem of horror and mystery; a kind of spiritual variation on classic tales of lycanthropy; though its effectiveness depends on one's sensitivity to, and belief in, the potential horrors of the very real though unseen forces beneath material manifestation. The Story Outline: The first few pages of The Great God Pan describe Mr. Clarke's visit to his friend Dr. Raymond. After many years of study, Dr. Raymond has theorized that the spirit world is all around us, but that humans are unable to perceive it because of the particular set-up of our sensory systems. A scientist, a self-proclaimed practitioner of transcendental medicine, Dr. Raymond operates on the young teenage girl Mary's brain to heighten her spiritual awareness; but instead Pan, the wild nature spirit, or rather the tremendous invisible life force that seethes beneath nature's visible cloak, enters and impregnates her. The spawn of this diabolical union, a society woman with a lovely though strangely unsettling face, wreaks havoc in late 19th century London (very atmospherically portrayed in all its twisty mystery) as a series of well-heeled men mysteriously commit suicide. The rest of the story is Mr. Clarke's collection of accounts of unexplained suicides and strange deaths (apparently from shock and terror) in London society and his gradual suspicion that there is some connection between these deaths and Dr. Raymond's failed experiment. Facts and Trivia: 1. Written in 1894, Arthur Machen's The Great God Pan is a novella which was highly influential to H.P. Lovecraft and Stephen King. King, in fact, said The Great God Pan is "...one of the best horror stories ever written. Maybe the best in the English language. Mine isn't anywhere near that good..." 2. The title was taken from the poem "A Musical Instrument" published in 1862 by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, in which the first line of every stanza ends "... the great god Pan." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Machen’s occult investigator Dyson is back to the job with another murder mystery. 'The Inmost Light' presents Dyson’s first-hand account of a story he witnessed - the wife of a famous London doctor is found dead. However, the factors that came into play to cause her death can only be described as supernatural. A horrific transformation and a tinkering with the soul that resulted in her inevitable demise. 'The Inmost Light' presents implicit horrors rather than the overt horrors commonplace in for example H. P. Lovecraft’s fiction. Fans of the supernatural horror genre will love this story. Jorge Luis Borges cited Machen as a great writer and an inspiration for the magical realism movement in literature. Notorious occultist Aleister Crowley also greatly admired Machen for effortlessly crossing over the threshold that separates reality and the magical realm. Strongly recommended for fans of the 'Good Omens' series inspired by Terry Pratchett's fiction and starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant. Fans of the HBO show 'Lovecraft Country' may also find a true Lovecraft-ian treasure trove hidden between these pages Arthur Machen (1863-1947) was a Welsh writer of supernatural, fantasy, and horror novels. Before his literary career skyrocketed he also worked as a journalist and an actor. His major belief was that the ordinary and external world surreptitiously conceals something far more mysterious and bizarre. In turn, we are deeply interested in trying to lift the veil enshrouding the threshold separating the two. His most acclaimed works include the classic horror novella 'The Great God Pan' and the semi-autobiographical 'The Hill of Dreams'.

A version of the story was published in Whirlwind in 1890, and Machen revised and expanded it in 1894 for publication (and another story, Inmost Light) at the time of publication. Due to its decadent style and pornographic content, it has been widely condemned by the media as depraved and horrible. Book excerpt: Classics in speculative fiction, Arthur Machen's most famous stories are journeys through fear, madness, and the furthest regions of the unknown. A woman is rendered catatonic after a doctor's botched attempt at brain surgery. The surgery, it seems, has opened the woman to a forbidden fold in existence, a place not meant for human eyes, a place where "The Great God Pan" dwells. Years later, men of good position begin committing suicide in the most heinous ways, and for no apparent reason. But behind this trail of bodies is a mysterious woman. What is her connection to the suicides? And even more disturbing, what secrets does she share with the catatonic victim of a horrid medical experiment, a devastated woman who was shown the horrors of The Great God Pan? Also contains The Angels of Mons: The Bowmen and Other Legends of the War. --Part of the BROKEN GROUND series of novellas-- The Broken Ground project is a series of classic novellas that have influenced, revolutionized, or perfected the art of storytelling. These groundbreaking stories forced the boundaries and formed the future of literature, sometimes creating entire styles and genres in the process. With the idea that such works should be studied so that foundations can be understood, Broken Ground is dedicated to presenting these short-but-powerful novellas in a quality - yet affordable - package worthy of the words they contain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Of creators of cosmic fear raised to its most artistic pitch, few can hope to equal Arthur Machen." -- H. P. Lovecraft Arthur Machen (1863-1947), Welsh novelist and essayist, is considered one of the most important and influential writers of his time. While displaying a preoccupation with pagan themes and matters of the occult -- an interest he shared with his close friend, the distinguished scholar A. E. Waite -- his writing transcends the genre of supernatural horror. Oscar Wilde, W. B. Yeats, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, as well as Paul Bowles and Jorge Luis Borges are just a few of the literary notables who are counted among his admirers. Machen is also a key figure in the development of pulp magazine fiction (e.g., Weird Tales), a line of ancestry that leads directly to today's popular graphic novels. Further, Machen's name often crops up in the writings of theorists and practitioners of psychogeography, a school of thought and literature which explores the hidden links between the landscape and the mind. In "The Great God Pan," Arthur Machen delivers a tense atmospheric story about a string of mysterious suicides. With its suggestive visions of decadent sexuality, the work scandalized Victorian London. This edition also includes "The White People," "The Inmost Light," and "The Shining Pyramid." Taken together, these short stories are considered some of the first works of horror and have inspired generations of subsequent writers and creators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Three Imposters is a strange little book, a narrative about a secret society's efforts to retrieve a Roman coin ("The Gold Tiberius"), but this "novel" appears to be little more than a convenient device for telling a series of marvelous, horrific tales. Two of these tales--"The Novel of the Black Seal" and "The Novel of the White Powder"--are first-class works of imaginative fiction, and the entire book itself is entrancing, reminiscent of Stevenson's New Arabian Nights in its descriptions of London--conveyed in musical, Swinburneian prose--make of this nineteenth century metropolis something as exotic and fantastic as the Baghdad of Haroun al-Rashid. In addition, this collection contains not only two short stories but also the novella "The Great God Pan," one of the acknowledged classics of the weird tale. Its Chinese box structure--the horror revealed in fragments, in various voices, with lacunae which must be supplied by the reader--makes the narrative all the more compelling and terrifying in its obliqueness. (Lovecraft used this structure as his model for "The Call of Cthulhu.") "The Great God Pan" has an interesting plot as well, in that it is an inversion of the Ripper murders which occurred only a few years before. Instead of lower-class women murdered in the slums by an unknown male slasher, we have wealthy young men committing suicide in the most fashionable sections of London--and this time a mysterious woman seems to be involved.

Dr. Raymond's ultimate goal is to devise a way to open the mind of man so that he may experience all the world has to offer. He calls this, "seeing the great god Pan." After much study of the human mind he devises an experiment which involves minor brain surgery. He performs this experiment on a young woman named Mary, but when she awakes she is terrified and mentally crippled. Years later, the beautiful but sinister-looking Helen Vaughan is reported to have caused a series of mysterious happenings in a small nameless town. She spends all her days in the woods, scares a boy so much he is hospitalized, and leads to the rape of her best friend Rachel. Helen then moves to the London social scene and marries a man named Herbert. Years later Herbert is found by his former friend Villiers to be a beggar and vagrant. When asked how he has fallen so low, Herbert replies that he has been "corrupted body and soul" by his wife. Helen disappears for some time, supposedly taking part in disturbing orgies somewhere in the Americas. When she returns as Mrs. Beaumont she is followed by a series of suicides. Villiers discovers that she is in fact Helen and goes to confront her. He persuades her to hang herself and she has a very abnormal death, transforming between human and beast before finally dying. Ultimately, it is discovered that Helen is the child of Mary and Pan, who was let in when Raymond opened her mind up to him.
