Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dead bodies were not on Douglas and Roberta's Christmas lists…but they got them anyway. Twelve days from retirement, Detective Constable Douglas MacDonald’s Christmas wish is for a peaceful, crimeless holiday season. His partner, Roberta Cameron, wishes Douglas would leave the 1980s behind. Neither will get what they want. When people in the quaint, peaceful town of Hillford start dying at an extraordinary rate, in unusual ways, Douglas and Roberta’s holiday season is anything but peaceful. Each death gnaws at the officers. It’s all very familiar. But how? Roberta is desperate to catch the killer before news of her involvement in the case reaches the one person she’s tried to hide from for ten years. But when a mysterious letter appears on her doorstep Roberta fears for her life. Douglas’ bottomless cup of whiskey; his witty banter with Roberta; and flirtations with Ada, the crime scene technician supervisor, are what keep him sane. Mostly. What absurd manner of death will the killer come up with next? Will Roberta’s past destroy her future? Will Douglas drink enough Irish whiskey to forget the horrors of the holiday season?

Book excerpt: A stirring narrative of World War II's final major battle—the Pacific war's largest, bloodiest, most savagely fought campaign—the last of its kind. On Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945, more than 184,000 US troops began landing on the only Japanese home soil invaded during the Pacific war. Just 350 miles from mainland Japan, Okinawa was to serve as a forward base for Japan's invasion in the fall of 1945. Nearly 140,000 Japanese and auxiliary soldiers fought with suicidal tenacity from hollowed-out, fortified hills and ridges. Under constant fire and in the rain and mud, the Americans battered the defenders with artillery, aerial bombing, naval gunfire, and every infantry tool. Waves of Japanese kamikaze and conventional warplanes sank 36 warships, damaged 368 others, and killed nearly 5,000 US seamen. When the slugfest ended after 82 days, more than 125,000 enemy soldiers lay dead—along with 7,500 US ground troops. Tragically, more than 100,000 Okinawa civilians perished while trapped between the armies. The brutal campaign persuaded US leaders to drop the atomic bomb instead of invading Japan. Utilizing accounts by US combatants and Japanese sources, author Joseph Wheelan endows this riveting story of the war's last great battle with a compelling human dimension.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Twigger, poet and travel author, was in search of a new way up England when he stumbled across the Great North Line. From Christchurch on the South Coast to Old Sarum to Stonehenge, to Avebury, to Notgrove barrow, to Meon Hill in the midlands, to Thor's Cave, to Arbor Low stone circle, to Mam Tor, to Ilkley in Yorkshire and its three stone circles and the Swastika Stone, to several forts and camps in Northumberland to Lindisfarne (plus about thirty more sites en route). A single dead straight line following 1 degree 50 West up Britain. No other north-south straight line goes through so many ancient sites of such significance. Was it just a suggestive coincidence or were they built intentionally? Twigger walks the line, which takes him through Birmingham, Halifax and Consett as well as Salisbury Plain, the Peak district, and the Yorkshire moors. With a planning schedule that focused more on reading about shamanism and beat poetry than hardening his feet up, he sets off ever hopeful. He wild-camps along the way, living like a homeless bum, with a heart that starts stifled but ends up soaring with the beauty of life. He sleeps in a prehistoric cave, falls into a river, crosses a 'suicide viaduct' and gets told off by a farmer's wife for trespassing; but in this simple life he finds woven gold. He walks with others and he walks alone, ever alert to the incongruities of the edgelands he is journeying through.

Book excerpt: Paradise is a sprawling, diverse, often cruel world. There are humans on Paradise but dinosaurs predominate: wildlife, monsters, beasts of burden, and of war. Armored knights ride dinosaurs to battle legions of war-trained Triceratops and their upstart peasant crews. Karyl Bogomirsky is one such knight who has chosen to rally those who seek a way from the path of war and madness. The fact that the Empire has announced a religious crusade against this peaceful kingdom, the people who just wish to live in peace anathema, and they all are to be converted or destroyed doesn't help him one bit. Things really turn to mud when the dreaded Grey Angels, fabled ancient weapons of the Gods who created Paradise in the first place come on the scene after almost a millennia. Everyone thought that they were fables used to scare children. They are very much real. And they have come to rid the world of sin...including all the humans who manifest those vices. THE DINOSAUR KNIGHTS is the second in Victor Milan's lush, exotic tale about knights. Knights riding dinosaurs. Book excerpt: At the center of the stories is Kate, the matriarch, a woman of unrealized possibilities whose disappointments in life are masked by a veneer of cruelty which affects them all, especially her daughter, Bridget, subject of eight of the stories. Beginning in County Mayo, Ireland, the fifteen short stories in The Best of It lay bare the complexities and contradictions, the lights and shadows that plague the immigrant Quinn family as they move from the old and embrace the new. Included in the stories are Bea’s attempts to remain true to her religious beliefs in a loveless marriage, Timeen’s patriotic fervor which leads him with Patton’s Army into the Black Forest, John who thought he had left behind forever the “dyin” that so darkened his childhood. Bridget, in the second generation, becomes Sister Bridget whose life in the convent mirrors the aspirations and disappointments of her forebears.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Pulitzer prize–winning classic The Killer Angels, Michael Shaara created the finest Civil War novel of our time. The Last Full Measure tells the epic story of the events following the Battle of Gettysburg and brings to life the final two years of the Civil War. Jeff Shaara dramatizes the escalating confrontation between Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant—complicated, heroic, and deeply troubled men. For Lee and his Confederate forces, Gettysburg has been an unspeakable disaster, but he is determined to fight to the bitter end; he faces Grant, the decisive, hard-nosed leader the Union army so desperately needs in order to turn the tide of the war. From the costly Battle of the Wilderness to the agonizing seize of Petersburg to Lee’s epoch-making surrender at Appomattox, Shaara portrays the riveting conclusion of the Civil War through the minds and hearts of the individuals who gave their last full measure. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Jeff Shaara's Blaze of Glory.

Book excerpt: Best of Chicago is the definitive guide to America's third-largest city, created each year, for nineteen years running, by Chicago's only locally owned and operated alternative weekly, Newcity. Unlike other city guides that trot out the same-old same-old tourist traps, Best of Chicago is equally a resource for visitors, newcomers and lifelong Chicagoans. Readers will still learn the basics like who has the best hotdog, but so too, the best place to nonchalantly check out the opposite sex. Sure, Best of Chicago will tell readers who has the best holiday-themed theatrical production. But it also has the best hipster-free bar in Wicker Park. The best Middle Eastern restaurant, the best Montreal-style poutine in Chicago, the best place to drink in the forest preserves, the best unrecognized landmark to Chicago’s gay community, the best place to meet strangers over breakfast, and so on, through more than 500 entries. Entries are organized in five broad categories, including City Life, Culture & Nightlight, Food & Drink, Goods & Services, and Sports & Recreation. And not only will readers discover places to go in Chicago, but they'll learn about the city's history while enjoying a laugh or two throughout.

Book excerpt: My Soft Response To The Wars is the debut poetry collection from Canadian Poetry Slam Champion, RC Weslowski. With a clown's eye and a trickster's lip these poems work to rewrite the trauma of childhood sexual abuse with the scissors of surrealism and absurdity. Love and how to survive its loss and transform it into something we can carry forward no matter how wretched, weird and ridiculous it may seem in the aftermath of betrayal is the driving principle in all these poems. Whether embracing faith through doubt in "Let's Not Get It Together" or covering himself in grease and blood in the inspirational "It Begins" to the feverish twin exhortations of "I've Been Thinking" and "There's No Fucking Time To Fucking Live" RC Weslowski asks us to follow him into the whirlwind and have whatever mule hair we have left to be blown back into our faces while looking our best in "Dead Horse Mascara." The poems in this collection invite you to ride the Tilt o Whirl backwards and find your own "P.N.E. Love Affair." Put a pair of diapers on the ass of your logic and allow it to shit itself and find the meaning beyond the meaning by reveling in the joy and sacrilege of these words.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paper This immensely readable book, full of drama and humor as well as scholarship, is a watershed in the writing of New Zealand history. In making many new assertions and challenging many historical myths, it seeks to reinterpret our approach to the past. Given New Zealand's small population, short history, and great isolation, the history of the archipelago has been saddled with a reputation for mundanity. According to James Belich, however, it is just these characteristics that make New Zealand "a historian's paradise: a laboratory whose isolation, size, and recency is an advantage, in which the grand themes of world history are often played out more rapidly, more separately, and therefore more discernably, than elsewhere." The first of two planned volumes, Making Peoples begins with the Polynesian settlement and its development into the Maori tribes in the eleventh century. It traces the great encounter between independent Maoridom and expanding Europe from 1642 to 1916, including the foundation of the Pakeha, the neo-Europeans of New Zealand, between the 1830s and the 1880s. It describes the forging of a neo-Polynesia and a neo-Britain and the traumatic interaction between them. The author carefully examines the myths and realities that drove the colonialization process and suggests a new "living" version of one of the most critical and controversial documents in New Zealand's history, the Treaty of Waitangi, frequently descibed as New Zealand's Magna Carta. The construction of peoples, Maori and Pakeha, is a recurring theme: the response of each to the great shift from extractive to sustainable economics; their relationship with their Hawaikis, or ancestors, with each other, and with myth. Essential reading for anyone interested in New Zealand history and in the history of new societies in general.
