Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Granite Monthly New Hampshire Magazine, 1890, Vol. 13: Devoted to Literature, Biography, History, and State Progress The new town, located in a fertile region, soon became of importance. Farms were cleared; new crops were introduced; and many new enter prises were inaugurated. The town filled up, and an exodus into the wilderness commenced. Amoskeag falls offered sport for the fisherman, but the soil in the neighborhood was poor. Pressing on, in parties large and small, they made their stand in the valley of the Suncook, on the hillsides in Pembroke, and along the banks of the Contoocook.
