Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone Between the Springs and Norris Basin there is not a mile of the twenty that is uninteresting. Skirting the colored terraces, the fine road twists among the Travertine rocks, a curious and wide spread medley of jumbled and angular silver gray rocks, giving the name of Silver Gate to the pass age-way among them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yellowstone National Park A stairway allows the visitor to de scend to the very brink of Great Falls, and from here the view will hold him entranced. The water leaps into the abyss with a roar of anger and in one huge flood of brilliant, dazzling foam. The lower part of the falls is concealed by great clouds of mist. Gazing down the canyon from the bank of the falls, the visitor may see Point Lookout rearing its head a half mile below. Almost directly opposite, to the right, is Artists' Point, the spot selected by Thomas Moran, the Ameri can landscape artist, to paint his famous picture that now hangs in the capitol at Washington. This is only one of the many pictures in which this great painter has tried to catch the color of the crown ing marvel of Yellowstone Park, -the Grand Canyon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grand Canyon of Arizona: How to See It Upwards of ten years ago I sat on the south rim of the Grand Canyon and wrote "In and Around the Grand Canyon." In that book I included much that more than a decade of wandering up and down the trails of this great abyss had taught me. At that rime the only accommodations for sightseers were stage lines or private conveyance from Flagstaff and Ash Fork, and, on arrival at the Canyon, the crude hotel-camps at Hance's, Grand View, Bright Angel, and Bass's. The railway north from Williams was being built. Everything was crude and primitive. Now the railway is completed and has become an integral part of the great Santa Fe System, with at least two trains a day each way carrying Pullman sleepers, chair cars and coaches. At Bright Angel, where the railway deposits its passengers at the rim of the Canyon, stands El Tovar Hotel, erected by the railway company at a cost of over a quarter of a million dollars, which is equipped and conducted by Fred Harvey. Yet El Tovar is more like a country club than a hotel, in many respects, and, to that extent, is better. New roads and trails have been opened up, and further provision made for the entertainment of travelers visiting the Canyon. Hence, for several years, there has been a growing demand for a revision of "In and Around the Grand Canyon," is still as helpful to the traveler and general reader as ever, there has been a growing demand for a new book which could give the information needed by the traveler who comes under the new conditions, telling hm how he may best avail himself of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Around the Grand Canyon: The Grand Canyon of the Colorado River in Arizona Since this book was written and published in 1900 it has been reprinted a number of times and several thousands of copies have been sold. Although the author issued in 1910 an entirely new book on the same - "The Grand Canyon of Arizona" - there is still a steady and constant demand for this larger and earlier work. It has been deemed appropriate, however, before issuing a new edition, that part of one chapter should be entirely rewritten, and an appendix added, which will contain much new and important information. A new map has also been provided which the tourist or general reader will find of material help. The reasons for these enlargements and additions are found in the many and varied changes that have taken place in the Grand Canyon; not in the Canyon itself, but in the hotel accommodations, trails, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Wonderlands of the American West: Being the Notes of a Traveler, Concerning the Yellowstone Park, the Yosemite National Park, and the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River, With a Chapter on Other Wonders of the Great American West It may be on account of this very scepticism that thousands never see the most inspiring marvels of our own country. We question the fidelity of artist and word-painter, and spend our vacations in Europe or in some conventional resort hotel, while the great world of beauty and soul-stirring wonders of the American West remain undiscovered and unexplored so far as we are concerned. Or perhaps some are rather appalled at the vast distances they must cover by rail, and the discomforts - which prove more fanciful than real, after all - that they dread to undergo. Whatever the reason, there are but few thousands yearly who visit the Yellowstone, the Yosemite and the Grand Canyon, out of the millions who might find recreation and enjoy ment in these virgin retreats of nature.
